IIRC - the Anthony grief expert appeared to be intoxicated. Maybe this one will be also.

"Expert" witness, a psychologist, reads from the DSM-IV

That's a bit weird. I think the Dr. also testified that the Commonwelath's psychologist disagreed with her but said Sandusky fit HPD in one catergory.

I want to know how the cross will go. The prosecutor needs to be aggressive.

A projector screen is used to explain the disorder as defined by the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Atkins says the disorder is characterized by excessive emotionality and attention seeking. The presentation gets quite technical. Reporter Barbara Barr said it seemed like some of the jurors and those in the courtroom get confused by the explanation.

by WGAL 2:55 PM

The doctor says he diagnosed Sandusky with histrionic personality disorder after six hours of interviews with Sandusky and one hour with his wife, Dottie. The doctor also reviewed the letters and the accusers' grand jury testimony.

by WGAL 2:53 PM

These letters, which have been described as creepy love letters, are evidence of histrionic personality disorder, according to the doctor.

by WGAL 2:52 PM

The next testimony is from an expert – psychologist Dr. Elliot Atkins, who talks about letters written by Sandusky.

by WGAL 2:51 PM

Before the next witness takes the stand, the judge explains to the jury that an expert is qualified to offer an opinion, as opposed to witnesses who testify about fact.

by WGAL 2:50 PM

On cross examination from prosecutor McGettigan, the witness admits that he loathes the accuser's mother.

by WGAL 2:49 PM

The witness also recounts a conversation in 2008 when he said the mother said to him -- How do I find out if somebody is a registered sex offender? The witness wanted to know why – if something was wrong. The witness said the mother then told him that her son was touched by Jerry Sandusky and needed to know if this needed to be taken further. The witness said the mother said – I'll own his house. The witness said the mother's comment was that she would have a nice big house in the country where the dogs can roam free.

by WGAL 2:48 PM

The defense then calls a witness who knows and lives near the accuser's mother (the one who just testified). This witness recounts a time in 2008 that he had a conversation with the mother about her son and an argument took place. The witness says the mother would frequently send her children away so she could have a weekend here and there.

by WGAL 2:46 PM

The defense points out that the accuser's mother has an attorney. The defense asked if she paid any fees. The mother said – No … I retained him to keep the press away from my family.

by WGAL 2:43 PM

She was asked by the defense if she said that because of the situation with Sandusky she was going to make a lot of money and buy a big house with lots of room for the dogs to run around – that by the time the Sandusky case was over, she was going to be a very wealthy person. The mother answered – No.

by WGAL 2:43 PM

The next witness for the defense was the mother of an accuser.

by WGAL 2:43 PM

Steinbacher says the last conversation she had with Jerry was in 2010, before she retired. Steinbacher said -- We had such a special interest in children. We talked for four hours. I can't even talk to my own husband for four minutes." (there is laughter in the courtroom)

Steinbacher said she and Dottie have texted a lot through all of this drama.

by WGAL edited by WGAL2:41 PM

Steinbacher said Sandusky had a good reputation.

On cross examination, Prosecutor McGettigan asked Steinbacher about Sandusky's sudden resignation. She said they never had a conversation about it.

She said she didn't recall any child staying overnight while she was at Second Mile.

by WGAL 2:37 PM

Steinbacher said she met Accuser 4. She said they were quite friendly and amicable. She said there were always people in and out of the Sandusky home.

by WGAL 2:35 PM

The next witness called by the defense was Elaine Steinbacher, from North Carolina. Steinbacher has known Jerry and Dottie Sandusky for 47 years. Steinbacher said Jerry was her motivator and inspiration.

Steinbacher said she stayed at the Sandusky home 8 to 11 times a year. She said she sent kids to Second Mile to be inspired and motivated.

by WGAL 2:34 PM

On cross examination, Martin tells the prosecutors that he does recall one incident when he was staying at Sandusky's home when Sandusky and a boy were going to shower after a workout at Penn State.

by WGAL edited by WGAL2:33 PM

Amendola wanted to show that Sandusky gave others gifts and wrote notes. Martin said -- I think he was honest, caring, truthful, law abiding.

by WGAL edited by WGAL2:32 PM

Martin said Sandusky had a graduation party for him at his house and that he gave him a photo album. He said there were pictures of Penn State. He also recounted a poem that Jerry wrote for him. The title was – Thanks. The poem said roughly -- Thanks for the memories. Thanks for being so warm and friendly for having a special touch....thanks ..for brightening our life from above..thanks for wearing blue and white..thanks for being you.... The poem was signed, Jerry, Dottie (Sandusky's wife) and some others.

by WGAL 2:31 PM

Martin said he stayed at the Sandusky house for a month in 1992 or 93. He also said that Sandusky has given him some gifts over the years.

by WGAL 2:29 PM

Dr. James Martin took the stand for the defense. He is a Penn State graduate. He wrestled at the college and won a national championship at 126 pounds – reluctantly he said. The line got a laugh from the courtroom.

Martin became good friends with Sandusky at college. The wrestling and football team did weightlifting in the same area.

I would assume that the contract was more Second Mile and less pervy Sandusky. Given the fact that they were offering college tuition help, I could see a performance based contract with the charity as quite acceptable. jmo

Now, for the gifts and tickets and trips that Jer offered his "asterisk" friends, I think the contract meant different things to those boys. JMO
:notgood:Mmmmm, not necessarily, I'm seeing it as cash incentives, payoffs for being Jerry's victims, like Michael Jackson would do with his victims, IMO.

It almost seem archaic the we can't get tweets from the court room! Sure would love to see this trial live but no in real time tweets - so disappointing.

Thanks to all who have been posting today!!!

The psychologist then examined some of Sandusky's letters, which were projected on a screen. Atkins says Sandusky's admission is that he is extremely emotional and has strong feelings he can't contain. He expects people would stay committed to him. The doctor says he's the kind of person who's naïve, not very bright -- at least socially.

Atkins says Sandusky clearly meets the criteria for histrionic personality disorder.

At this point court takes a 20 minute break.

Jerry and Dottie have had a fair amount of time to prep for the psych eval. The expert said his diagnosis of H B "could" explain the creepy letters.

He didn't say that in his opinion they "did".

It could be inferred that Sandusky's letter's were creepy because he is a child predator.

I was not abused and, to my knowledge, have never met anyone IRL who was abused as a child. I think it sounds like exactly what I'd expect from someone who had been molested or lived through some other trauma - lying, not wanting to tell what happened, acting out, getting into trouble, acting withdrawn...

It is beyond belief to me that you could convince 10 boys to lie about something so horrible that will follow them around forever, and get them to lie so believably about consistent behavior from Jerry. I can't imagine that any amount of money would make up for a man saying he had been raped and having his name and face in open court.

And, I cannot fathom that you could explain an adult witness (McQueary) coming forward years ahead of time to tell what these boys/men would say at trial and during police interviews. "the showers...the showers...the showers."

How would you fake the pictures of kids at the games, when even the defense witnesses said they never took kids to games and hotel rooms.

The defense might discredit one or two boys; they might dismiss one game or one hotel stay; they might suggest that McQueary overreacted and thought he saw something he didn't; but there is no way, IMHO, to get all of these things to fit together as well as they do without there being something really wrong here.
BBM. And you would be right, I've been molested and I've worked with kids who were molested, and that is typical behavior.

Thomas Mesereau was on In-Session a little bit ago. I think he is one of the best criminal defense lawyers ever.
Because he represented Michael Jackson???

Omg, this hasn't been easy on Dottie-- I'd say she's lost about 25 lbs since the first of the year. She may even be sick, as we saw with JoePa-- stress like this is a wildfire of devastation for the immune system. jmo
