Freeh report vs footballl:
........Former FBI Director Louis Freeh's report, which will examine
who was responsible for covering up the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal,
what policies contributed to it and
what corrective measures are needed to ensure that it never repeats, could be ready by mid- to late-July, Penn State President Rodney Erickson said.........
This is going to get very interesting before its over. One thing is certain. The Paterno loyalists at the school and in the BOT are not going down without a fight, as evidenced by their having already captured a significant amount of media attention in the person of new trustee Lucarno, who comes to the board with the backing and support of a significant number of alumns and whose whole purpose on the board is to reclaim joe paternos legacy and to ensure that football continues to wag the tail of the penn state university administration.
while the Freeh report is not the only hurdle the joepa faithful face, (the other quite obivously being the trials of ,so far, Curly and Schultz) if they can successfully challenge its import and blunt its impact at the state level, enough at least to keep the lid on the state college way of doing things long enough for all this media attention to (finally) go away and let things return to normal, they will have succeeded in their task. Normal is, for all practical purposes, penn state football running itself and pushing the rest of the university around if it tries to say anything about it. the whole "save joes legacy" is, imo, a smoke screen. what these people want is football to remain king of happy valley. they would love for joepa to be its restored Lion King, of course, and that is their stated goal, but underneath it all is the struggle fo the supremacy and independence of the football god. That is what they are after, and just exactly who their opponents are and what their next moves might be is not being covered by the press in so far as I can tell. This is going to be interesting. Its pretty clear where the Freeh report is going, and it is just as clear where the Lucarno/joepa loyalists are going to try and take it. How this shakes out may have larger implications in the world of higher education nationally. Clearly the tail is wagging the dog in America's college system and has been for many decades. The highest paid "public servants" in every large state in the country are the heads of the football programs, who control the millions of dollars that are funnelled into the institutions annually by football crazed alumni. It would be interesting indeed if Joepas real legacy turned out to be the window that uncovered and changed the hitherto unchallenged supremacy of football and its 1000 lb gorilla in the room, the football millions of dollars, which are pushing these great state instutions around as if they were paper kites, and have been for decades.
