if joe hadnt hung up on the bots he would have learned that they had intended to name him coach emiritus(sp) or whatever Lubrano is now trying to get him elevated to, but joe hung up b4 they could tell him, so he lost that designation of his own volution.

I too remember reading this cover story, but frankly, I think it was made up after the fact. From what I can find, Trustee Surma first mentioned this in March of this year, in what seemed to me to be an effort to soften the criticism of the board's handling of the situation.

The official letter Paterno received the week after his telephone firing made no mention of those accolades, instead simply arranging for him to return any University property in his possession; certainly not what one would expect if he were to have emeritus status, which for Sandusky allowed him an office and other perks.

This ESPN article has lots of interesting backstory and a copy of the letter written by Baldwin. If I recall, this was the article that had Governor Corbett quite angrily denying how it portrayed his role in the events.

Penn State rakes in 'bonanza' haul of $208 MILLION in donations...
despite tarnish of horrific Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal

Penn State received money than $208 million in donations last year -- the second highest in university history -- despite the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal that tarnished the institution's name in front of the world.

More than 191,000 alumni and supporters opened their wallets to help the embattled university, even as prosecutors allege officials there covered up years of horrific child abuse to protect the image of the football program.

Hope it all goes to the victims, and then some.

Keep in mind, that was last year. The scandal didn't break until November. If it was the fiscal year, beginning on 7/1, there was still some time.

Also, one man gave 88 million, so it's diffcult to draw any conclusions from these numbers.

Allegations, loyalty and entangling alliances At Penn State, life went on after February 2001 abuse report

http://thedailyreview.com/news/allegations-loyalty-and-entangling-alliances-at-penn-state-life-went-on-after-february-2001-abuse-report-1.1341230

Dranov, who also testified at the trial, said he encouraged Mike McQueary to report the abuse to "his supervisor, who was Joe Paterno."

Dranov never said whether he confronted Paterno himself.

He had ample opportunity, treating Paterno for more than a decade after the report and standing by his side in his final hours.

According to will documents made public last week, Dranov signed Paterno's death certificate, confirming his Jan. 22 passing from a multi-organ system failure stemming from a months-long battle with metastatic small-cell carcinoma of the lung.

Central Pennsylvania Gothic.

This is basically the world in which much of Centre County exists. Everybody knows everyone else. It is, in essence, a cloistered society.

The beast of this cloister, "The Tickle Monster," was left to run around, doing what it wanted, by this group that turned a blind eye. This thing is a Gothic horror story. It's not a joke.

Thanks for the link, Bigcat!

In one notable clash, Paterno allowed defensive back Anwar Phillips, who had been expelled over sexual assault allegations, to play in a New Year's Day bowl game over Spanier's objections. Phillips was later acquitted.

"I think the president has every right to say what he thinks," Paterno said in April 2003. "That doesn't mean that anything anybody says can change my opinion, right or wrong."

Well isn't that just a fine how do you do? Paterno sounds like an obstinate hard headed, stubborn narcissist. moo

'Success with Honor' my arse! He allowed a monster to continue to use PSU facilities to sexually abuse young boys!

I am almost speechless and so, so disappointed in this man that I once admired. I was raised in Bama and we worshipped the Bear down there when I was a kid. We looked forward to the PSU vs. UA games because of the friendly rivalry of Bear and Joe. Boy was I fooled by those big ole scholarly/gentlemanly looking glasses that Joe wore.

BTW, was Joe a smoker? IIRC, Bear was. And so was Dean Smith, former head coach of UNC basketball but he quit years ago. Just curious....

According to Dan Wetzel, the Freeh report is supposed to be released before Friday's Trustees meeting.

I hope that's true. I want to know what is in the actual report and not these leaks without context.

My Second Mile: How I Grew Up With The Now-Doomed Organization
By Thomas L. Day Nov 30, 2011 4:35 PM
http://deadspin.com/5863865/my-second-mile-how-i-grew-up-with-the-now+doomed-organization

"That didn't mean, however, that Paterno granted blanket immunity to misbehaving football players. Joe's Law often sentenced offenders to community service, and that community service most frequently involved The Second Mile.

The Second Mile is but an extension of the Penn State football program. The former cannot function without the support of the latter...

Frequently football players were sent to The Second Mile after getting kicked off the team. The Second Mile would provide older mentors to keep an eye on them. The players would be pupils for the older volunteers, but heroes to the kids, who didn't know or care if they'd been recently involved in a bar fight. If the players did what they were supposed to, they would get their way back on the team, with The Second Mile's imprimatur."

I can't link the article as I am on my kindle but Spanier met with the Freeh investigators recently and he denied knowing about the Sandusky allegations.

Did The Jerry Sandusky Scandal Help Penn State Make More Money?

http://www.forbes.com/sites/chrissm...usky-scandal-help-penn-state-make-more-money/

Penn State announced yesterday that the school received $208.7 million in donations over the last fiscal year, the second-highest amount ever collected by the school. Donors also set school records with 191,712 supporters providing 323,271 total gifts. The fundraising success is of particular interest, if not surprise, given the child sex abuse scandal that enveloped the school late last year. Though a closer look at the numbers reveals that Penn State’s fundraising has actually suffered somewhat when compared to past years, support for the school is undoubtedly at an all-time high despite the ongoing scandal.

Last year’s donations were part of a seven-year fundraising campaign called “For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students.” The fundraising effort began in January of 2007, and Penn State has already secured $1.6 billion of its $2 billion goal. The only other year to surpass last year’s $208 million mark was 2010-11, during which the school received about $275 million from alumni and friends. That total, however, also included a $44 million contribution from Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula, part of an $88 million commitment towards constructing the Pegula Ice Arena and to establish a Division I ice hockey program (Pegula has since raised his total commitment to $102 million). Penn State received $203 million in 2009-10.
-------

Last year’s record 191,712 donors was an increase of more than 1,000 from the previous year, a sudden uptick in the face of several consecutive years of declining donor numbers. According to Kirsch, “alumni are believing in the institution they love and care about.”

So glad we now know when to expect the report now. Hopefully it answers some questions, though I'm sure it'll raise more questions.
