Our most saddening and sobering finding is the total disregard for the safety and
welfare of Sandusky’s child victims by the most senior leaders at Penn State. The most
powerful men at Penn State failed to take any steps for 14 years to protect the children
who Sandusky victimized. Messrs. Spanier, Schultz, Paterno and Curley never
demonstrated, through actions or words, any concern for the safety and well-being of
Sandusky’s victims until after Sandusky’s arrest.

The report seems to offer this as contributing to the decision against prosecuting the '98 case:

A senior adminstrator of a local victim resource center familiar with the 1998 incident said the case against Sandusky was "severly hampered" by Seasock's report"

A few paragraphs earlier is this:

...Seasock achnowledged he was not aware of many of the concerns Schreffler raised but stated Sandusky "didn't fit the profile of a pedophile," and the he couldn't find any indication of child abuse.

I thought I read somewhere in the report that Seascock suggested Sandusky was in the process of grooming the victim but had not cross the line into child abuse. I could be wrong. I would have to reread when I get a chance.

I agree that this was not a football or academic scandal. It was a leadership scandal. Paterno was part of that leadership, but he wasn't all of it.

I don't know that Paterno had the power to stop it, but he did have influenced with the people that did. He had the influence to ask those people if it was properly investigated and if it was true. It sure looks like his influence included approval of not reporting it.

He could have got the monster off campus, demanded it even.....

Spanier banned a sports agent from campus for purchasing $400 worth of clothing for a Penn State player. He did nothing to Sandusky after the 98 investigation.

It's appalling. Truly.

I do not understand it. :/

Curley sent Schultz an email in 98 asking about the status of the investigation stating, "coach is anxious to know where it stands."

Well, that just says it all about who was actually in charge, doesn't it? :thud:

Case closed on Paterno now, in my opinion. :maddening:

That was the problem of duelling psychologists, where one opined that Sandusky didn't look like a pedophile, the other said he was grooming. I can't remember the name of the one who said he was grooming.

This, about then-University Police Department Chief Thomas Harmon:

On May 5, 1998, Schultz also learned from Harmon that the Penn State University Police were "going to hold off" making any crime log entry for the Sandusky allegations. The crime log entry would have been a public record of the incident concerning Sandusky with the boy, yet Harmon reported to Schultz before noon on May 5 that "we're going to hold off on making any crime log entry. At this point in time I can justify that decision because of the lack of clear evidence of a crime."

The Freeh report had already described Sandusky's actions with the boy in more detail than any other previously published report.

The coded language used in the 2001 emails was unique. Even when discussing the 98 investigation in 98, Curley, Schultz, and Spannier referred to Sandusky as "Jerry." The report draws no conclusion. We can draw our own, I guess.

Here's another whopper on Paterno regarding Sandusky's retirement (from the footnotes on pg. 51):

Penn State officials were familiar with the issues of liability that could arise from Sandusky bringing minor to the Lasch Building. For example, notes maintained by Paterno reflect that Sandusky proposed several continuing connections with Penn State when he retired in 1999. Among these connections was that he would have continuing "access to training and workout facilities." A handwritten note on this proposal reads: "Is this for personal use of 2nd Mile kids. No to 2nd Mile. Liabitlity problems."

The Freeh report includes that actual document, with printed text listing Sandusky's requests. It's covered with scribbled notes, presumably Paterno's handwriting.

IF Paterno wasn't already dead, he would be dying...right now!

The most important part is he failed as a human....:banghead::banghead:

I know Joe P died of cancer. It is a terrible disease, I lost my own mother to it, would never wish it on anyone. With that said, for him, I am sorry he lost his life to cancer.

What I am not sorry about is how I feel about him otherwise. He disgusts me. The leadership @ PSU during all of this disgust me - all of them. How they could have ALL turned their heads from the victims in order to preserve the name of PSU and it's glorious football program in order to keep Joe P up on his pedestal is beyond my reach of even comprehending. I'm glad they fired him, he deserved it.

Damning, 3 stooges knew about 1998 prior to Gricar knowing.

Sandusky's nonpromotion was before the 1998 incident.

It looks like it was to avoid "bad publicity."
