"Perfect storm" of cliches make bad English list

  • #21
Two cliched phrases that definitely should be on this list are "at the end of the day" and "slippery slope." So sick of hearing them.
I also can't believe how often I see in print: well, and uhm. It's bad enough to listen to a speaker and hear the constant uhm..uhmm..well, but to purposely insert it writing? Give me a break. ;)
Oh, and another thing, people using the word loose when they mean lose. Lose is to "lose" a footrace lose a game etc. "loose" is to loosen a tie, a rope etc. I see this mistake made frequently and can't understand the reason for it.

Here's a few more phrases that irk me, dunno if they're on the list:

1. It is what it is? (Huh, what?)

2. It may or may not be. (Completely redundant)

3. Well, it's MY opinion. (No sh*t Sherlock, who else's would it be?)

Hate it with a passion.

My friends all say "SHUT UP" when you tell a story.

I'll say

"did you hear that so and so is pregnant" and they just say Shut up!

GRRRR

I just look at them like, "Geez, I was just trying to tell ya!" LOL

Ah, the common use of improper language! LOL

Don't you hate when you're talking on your cell phone and when you walk by someone they just HAVE to say "Can you hear me now"

GRRR

I'm adding "I'ma" [I'm going to] and "I just threw up in my mouth a little bit." Time for some new material! [Not on this board--in general!]

Blech!! My sister's ex-husband used to use this all the time - like 8 years ago - and there was nothing good about him!!!

I HATE when people say "No problem" in response to thank you. Every wait person we encounter says this when I thank them for something, come to think of it, they say it when I make a request like, may I have some more water, etc. I always want to say, it better not be a problem, its your job to wait on me so SHUt up! What happened to youre welcome? Sorry for the rant, it just drives me crazy. The other is "my bad". You know this is way overused when your 7 year old comes home from school using this gem.

My boss hates this so much!!! I have been known to be guilty of it - it has seeped into our language as a causual way of saying "You're welcome."

Love you hat, by the way - that may be my all-time favorite book!

I've been known to respond that way to "if you will"......more than once, I'm afraid, and out loud! :blushing:
