Peru more than DOUBLES its official Covid death toll | Daily Mail Online

"Peru on Monday more than doubled its official Covid-19 death toll following a government review, giving it the highest death rate per capita in the world.

Authorities revised the toll from 69,342 to 180,764 after experts warned the true number of deaths was being undercounted in official statistics.

The rise rocketed Peru to the highest per capita mortality rate in the world on 548 deaths per 100,000 people, overtaking Hungary on 304 per 100,000, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Peru has been among the hardest hit Latin America countries during the COVID-19 pandemic, with its hospitals overcrowded with patients and demand for oxygen outstripping availability.

Questions about Peru's death toll surfaced soon after the beginning of the pandemic.

Scenes of cemeteries filling up with new burials and and hospitals buying refrigerated containers to act as makeshift morgues suggested the situation was far worse than the official data showed."
