Petition Lifetime

I applaud your effort, I truly do, but am not sure I can support the petition as written. From my reading, it's a pretty broad expansion of existing son of sam laws and may miss some other points that should be included. Maybe a good idea to put the idea in a thread of its own to discuss and debate a few days to come up with perfect wording.

Don't get me wrong, I think it was very well written; even better than the Lifetime Petition text; and it's clearly well thought out. There's just a few other things I think should be considered in formulating this idea; like what are the current laws? I know you're swamped right now with school, so expecting you to do all of the research wouldn't be fair, that's why I'm suggesting a new thread.

Anyone else have any thoughts on it?

Oh I completely agree, that was why in the comments I asked for what others wanted to see on the actual letter. The son of sam laws do not apply in this situation since she hadnt been convicted or even charged yet. They also have no bearing on a law to limit the time a parent or guardian has to report a child missing, (there is no law on that). That is also why I havent written the actual letter to the senate/congress yet, I need to do more research and needs to be properly formatted in order to be presented, in that particular forum you cant do that.

Right; that's what I meant by greatly broadening those laws; they wouldn't kick in at this point because of no conviction and it's an unusual situation where an intimate of the (soon to be) convicted perpetrator is also an intimate of the victim family. Hard to guess how a court would rule on a family member getting $ in this instance. I have never read of a similar circumstance or even a hypothetical in any opinions.

As for a mandatory reporting time, I think that would vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and I'm not sure what jurisdiction the feds would have on this. It's going to be a judgment call from case to case, imo, in most jurisdictions. What if, for example, a child really was kidnapped; ransom demands were made, etc. and the parents were too scared to call LE? Or what if the child got lost in a shuffle of divorced parents, each thinking the other had custody until time for exchange came up? Or what if it's a teen that ran away, left a note and all?

There's just so much too this, imo. Good that you have that part in there about suggestions. I was just suggesting having things pretty well outlined before doing petition, that's all. For example, maybe someone would support a law that had a 24 hour mandatory time to report but not one that had a 2 hour or a 72 hour time.

I don't mean to be so critical. Honestly, I do respect what you've done. I'd just like to see it taken a bit further before signing on.

dcorrigano, what do you think of starting a new thread for the new petition? A lot of people here have already signed the 1st petition and don't regularly follow this thread. You won't get as much attention for it without giving it a new thread, imo.

I dont start threads lol... and if the Lifetimes Petition's biggest supporter doesnt support this one, then Its probably not a good idea...

There is already a Caylee's law in the works. That law will not allow any parent out on bail if they are suspect in killing their child.

Suspect??? That's a bit unconstitutional. I searched everywhere for one in the works or enacted and I found nothing.

I think it's a very good idea and would very much like to see it discussed. I'd start a thread on it but unfortunately, every time I start a thread it gets deleted. Not just moved, but deleted. And I wouldn't want to curse such an important thread.

If anyone will be so kind as to start a new thread for the new petition idea, please be sure to get admin approval first.* If approval is not given, please start anyway, for a discussion of ideas related to a possible future petition, if they will approve that alternative topic.

I think it is a great idea that you started. To many high profile criminals make money off of the tragedy they create. I am a victim of a violent crime and I was a 22 year old in my last semester of college. He plea bargained down to rape, kidnapping, armed robbery, burglary, grand theft auto, and killing my dog. He is serving 4 life sentences. While in prison he has been able to complete multiple college degrees. I have lived in fear, had to pay for therapy, and truly have never been "normal" again. All the while trying to make ends meet while he is housed, fed, and his college paid for. Not trying to change the story but when I was raped silver duct taped was used to tie me up and blind fold me. It is almost impossible to escape from. I would like to get the word out on what to do if this ever happens to you. Since you seem so capable with your work with Lifetime maybe you can think of a way to help people that are victims of kidnappings and home envasions. Thanks for all you do. She should not make a dime for whatever part she had in the disappearance of Caylee!

I was actually talking to my local senator, who I gave my opinions to about this and the bail out... He told me if I wanted to try to pass a law to just do it. Laws are passed all the time by NORMAL people and he would be happy to review it...I agree, this is just ridiculous. It also encourage people to lie and cover up evidence.

Although, I do have to say... If bond is the only part of that law in the works, it doesn't go far enough. Also, upon ten seconds reflection, not seeing how that would work at all. Doesn't feel right, if you know what I mean. No bond? No discretion depending on circumstances? In a capital case, there's already no bond. I'm really not understanding this.
