OMG windchime. Just finally got back on and the thread was long.
However the last few posts ppl were saying I'm sorry and a bunch of ppl.
Had no clue what the h*ll was going on. I back tracked......woow
This thread I thought was more about relationship between Pierce and his wife. Not about if someone was a size 2 (I'm not a 2, think they look sick) or 14..

They look very happy and Pierce adores her and ALL the kids...

My dear Windchime as I read this thread and some of the negative comments I thought of you.

You and I have talked many times of your struggle. I can and will vouch for the fact that Windchime is anything BUT lazy.
If she had my metabolism she would weigh 85 lbs. She hardly sits still!

I totally disagree with the notion that overweight equates to lazy.. Or means someone eats too much.
If that were true I would be much heavier.
My Hubby had his tonsils out and did not eat for 10 days and he did not lose a pound..
If I did not eat for ten days I would be disgustingly skinny.
Skinny does NOT mean healthy ... In truth it often means very very sick.

It's amazing but through animals having cushings that is how they found it in humans. I truly am looking so forward to having the lapband surgery. I will be keeping a journal I will have a picture taken the day before surgery and then each month on the same date I will have another photo taken. I know this is my last hope in getting down to a healthy weight and I'm praying my pitutary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal gland and ovaries all kick in and decide to work in sink together.
The pituitary gland is a pea-sized endocrine gland located at the base of the brain. The pituitary regulates and controls the secretion of hormones from other endocrine glands, which in turn regulate many body processes. These hormones include:

Growth hormone (GH)
Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
Prolactin
About 75% of pituitary tumors secrete hormones. When a tumor produces excessive amounts of one or more hormones, the following conditions may occur:

Gigantism or acromegaly (excess growth hormone)
Hypothyroidism (excess thyroid stimulating hormone)
Cushing syndrome (excess adrenocorticotropic hormone)
Prolactinoma (excess prolactin)
As the tumor grows, hormone-secreting cells of the pituitary may be damaged, causing hypopituitarism.

The causes of pituitary tumors are unknown, although some are a part of a hereditary disorder called multiple endocrine neoplasia I (MEN I).

There are other types of tumors that can be found in the same area of the head as a pituitary tumor:

Craniopharyngiomas
Germinomas
Cysts
Metastatic tumors (tumors that have spread from cancer in another part of the body)
About 15% of tumors located within the skull are pituitary tumors. Most pituitary tumors are located in the anterior pituitary lobe and are usually benign (noncancerous).

Pituitary tumors develop in about 20% of people, although many of the tumors do not cause symptoms and the condition is never diagnosed during the person's lifetime.

Symptoms

Symptoms associated with pituitary tumors include:

Headache
Visual changes
Double vision
Drooping eyelids
Personality changes
Decreased sexual interest
Irritability
Seizures
Nasal drainage
Skin changes
Facial changes
Moon face, puffy eyes
Enlarged jaw and facial bones
Hair changes
Loss of body hair
Coarse, thin head hair
Thinning of eyebrows
Weakness
Lethargy
Temperature sensitivity
Intolerance to cold
Intolerance to heat
Constipation
Nausea and vomiting
Low blood pressure
Problems with the sense of smell
Changes in weight
Weight loss (unintentional)
Weight gain (unintentional)
Symptoms only in women:

Cessation of menses
Abnormal nipple discharge
Excessive body hair
Symptoms only in men:

Breast development
Impotence

Signs and tests

Your health care provider will perform a physical examination and will note any double vision and visual field deficits, such as loss of peripheral vision or the ability to see in certain areas.

Tests that help confirm the diagnosis include the following:

MRI of head
Cranial CT scan
Formal visual field testing
Endocrine function tests include:

Cortisol levels:
Urine cortisol test
Dexamethasone suppression test - serum cortisol levels measured after giving dexamethasone to suppress hormonal secretion
Saliva cortisol test
Insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels
Thyroid hormone levels:
TSH test
Free T4 test
Serum prolactin levels
Testosterone/estradiol levels
Luteinizing hormone (LH) levels
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels

Treatment

Pituitary tumors are usually not cancerous and therefore won't spread to other areas of the body. However, they can cause serious problems by putting pressure on the brain. Surgical removal is often necessary, particularly if the tumor is pressing on the optic nerves, which could cause blindness.

Most of the time, pituitary tumors can be removed through a transsphenoidal procedure -- the surgeon accesses the tumor through your nose and sinuses. However, some tumors cannot be removed this way and will require transcranial (through the skull) removal.

Radiation therapy may be used to shrink the tumor, either in combination with surgery or for people who cannot undergo surgery. Medications may shrink certain types of tumors:

Bromocriptine or cabergoline are the first-line therapy for tumors that secrete prolactin. These drugs decrease prolactin levels and shrink the tumor.
Somatostatin analogs are sometimes used for tumors that secrete growth hormone, particularly when surgery is unlikely to result in a cure.

Cushing syndrome (excess adrenocorticotropic hormone)( (ACTH),)

also called Corticotropin, a polypeptide hormone formed in the pituitary gland that regulates the activity of the outer region (cortex) of the adrenal glands. In mammals the action of ACTH is limited to those areas of the adrenal cortex in which the glucocorticoid hormones—cortisol and corticosterone (see corticoid)—are formed. The secretion of ACTH by the pituitary is itself regulated.

I won't post anymore info because like I said it's so complexed that it would take so long and so much info to fully understand. :-)

Purpose
The pituitary gland produces the hormone ACTH, which stimulates the outer layer of the adrenal gland (the adrenal cortex). ACTH causes the release of the hormones hydrocortisone (cortisol), aldosterone, and androgen. The most important of these hormones released is cortisol. The ACTH test is used to determine if too much cortisol is being produced (Cushing's syndrome) or if not enough cortisol is being produced (Addison's disease).

Precautions
ACTH has diurnal variation, meaning that the levels of this hormone vary according to the time of day. The highest levels occur in the morning hours. Testing for normal secretion, as well as for Cushing's disease, may require multiple samples. For sequential follow-up, a blood sample analyzed for ACTH should always be drawn at the same time each day.

ACTH can be directly measured by an analyzing method (immunoassay) in many large laboratories. However, smaller laboratories are usually not equipped to perform this test and they may need to send the blood sample to a larger laboratory. Because of this delay, results may take several days to obtain.

Description
ACTH production is partly controlled by an area in the center of the brain (the hypothalamus) and partly controlled by the level of cortisol in the blood. When ACTH levels are too high, cortisol production increases to suppress ACTH release from the pituitary gland. If ACTH levels are too low, the hypothalamus produces corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) to stimulate the pituitary gland to make more ACTH. ACTH levels rise in response to stress, emotions, injury, infection, burns, surgery, and decreased blood pressure.

Cushing's syndrome

Cushing's syndrome is caused by an abnormally high level of circulating hydrocortisone. The high level may be the result of an adrenal gland tumor or enlargement of both adrenal glands due to a pituitary tumor. The high level of hydrocortisone may be the result of taking corticosteroid drugs for a long time. Corticosteroid drugs are widely used for inflammation in disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and asthma.

Addison's disease

Addison's disease is a rare disorder in which symptoms are caused by a deficiency of hydrocortisone and aldosterone. The most common cause of this disease is an autoimmune disorder. The immune system normally fights foreign invaders in the body like bacteria. In an autoimmune disorder, the immune systems attacks the body. In this case, the immune system produces antibodies that attack the adrenal glands. Addison's disease generally progresses slowly, with symptoms developing gradually over months or years. However, acute episodes, called Addisonian crises, are brought on by infection, injury, or other stresses. Diagnosis is generally made if the patient fails to respond to an injection of ACTH, which normally stimulates the secretion of hydrocortisone.

Preparation
A person's ACTH level is determined from a blood sample. The patient must fast from midnight until the test the next morning. This means that the patient cannot eat or drink anything after midnight except water. The patient must also avoid radioisotope scanning tests or recently administered radioisotopes prior to the blood test.

Risks
The risks associated with this test are minimal. They may include slight bleeding from the location where the blood was drawn. The patient may feel faint or lightheaded after the blood is drawn. Sometimes the patient may have an accumulation of blood under the puncture site (hematoma) after the test.

Normal results
Each laboratory will have its own set of normal values for this test. The normal values can range from: Morning (4-8 A.M.) 8-100 pg/mL or 10-80 ng/L (SI units) Evening (8-10 P.M.) less than 50 pg/mL or less than 50 ng/L (SI units)

Abnormal results
In Cushing's syndrome, high levels of ACTH may be caused by ACTH-producing tumors. These tumors may be either in the pituitary or in another area (like tumors from lung cancer or ovarian cancer). Low ACTH levels may be caused by adrenal enlargement due to high levels of cortisol and feedback to the pituitary.

In Addison's disease, high levels of ACTH may be caused by adrenal gland diseases. These diseases decrease adrenal hormones and the pituitary attempts to increase functioning. Low levels of ACTH may occur because of decreased pituitary function

WindChime, will you let us know when you have your surgery? I will keep you in prayer..

  • #169
PaperDoll yes I sure will let you know the date of my surgery I know it's going to be sometime in Feb. I have a appointment with my surgeon after I return from our cruise which will be Feb.3rd then the following week I have my dr. appointment and if the remaining test that I just had done two weeks ago come back within normal range and I don't have to have any future test then my surgery will be scheduled within two weeks. I am so looking forward to getting the surgey over with so that I can get started on my new journey.:-)

Why would you? Are you not aware of the differences girls of different races have regarding the perception they have of their bodies?

In my experience African American women can teach us alot about accepting ourselves as we are.

Why would you or anyone else take exception to this?

I agree with you 100%, Karole. If that's racist, so be it.

But my personal experience is that the black women I know/have known are a lot more comfortable being big and curvy than the white woman I know/have known and the black men I know/have known are way more comfortable with a larger standard of curves in their honesy than the white men I know/have known.

Now this is very sad, WR-think of all the energy you are wasting on saying such terrible things to yourself. They are not based in reality-you are not the fattest person, the ugliest person or the worst person...reading many of the stories posted on these threads has to convince you of that!

I am always intrigued by the need some have to impose an image of health and beauty on others-what difference does it make if we accept people in all shapes, sizes, colors and quirks? So what if it is not how we choose to live our own lives-we are blessed to be living in a country where we have principles that guarantee our right to self expression as along as we are not harming someone directly as a result.

Undoubtedly many would make some judgements on my mother at one glance-to me she is unfailingly a lady, kind, gentle, intelligent and beautiful. My thin father died a horrible death from a pervasive cancer that caused tumors to grow rapidly, breaking ribs and eventually his sternum. Yet he trained for marathons...he was not particularly kind and gentle, btw. And in the end it is the kindness you put forth in life that carries on when you go-not what your scale reads. i support your right to be thin, curvy, wear day-glo orange hair without comment, and I will support you should you choose to change that aspect of yourself. I cannot stand by and see someone so compassionate as WR saying such unbalanced, disparaging things about herself however....:)

Thank you...I am down on myself a bit. I gained 60 lbs after quitting Methamphetamines. I know the drugs made me alot less unhealthy than the weight but man did I ever have a smoking body.

Ohh..thank you all for your kind, loving words. I wasn't being mean when I posted my post. I just want to inform people that they just can't or well I should say shouldn't judge one unless they truly know that one is obese because of just sitting on their 🤬🤬🤬 and shoving food in their face all day. I'd give anything in the world and I'd walk and jog 10 miles a day to have your shape Armaann. :blowkiss: Trust me I've done it and no matter how hard I've tired it's like my body is stuck at this weight. As a matter of fact I'm getting the LapBand Surgery done next month and I know it's only a tool and I'm hoping and praying that with my hard work and this wonderful tool I will be able to the weight I need to loose. I know starving one's self isn't the right way now that I am older and now there are good doctors out there that through years of research have learned the hormones that one needs to take along with eating 4-6 small healthy meals a day is the way to go in trying to win this medical battle. I am in research at Tampa General if I can be of any help to any other child that has cushings and adults as well I will be a ginny pig any day to help save another child or adult from having to go through what I have. But again I do not want a pitty party I just want people to be aware. And people who does have cushing you can't give up and say well I have cushings so I have a reason to be lazy and fat that is not right that is just giving up.

Thanks for sharing your story! :blowkiss:

It is really hard when a medical condition controls your life and weight and not you. I have thyroid problems and it's really hard sometimes. If my dose is off at all, my weight goes up and down like a balloon...I even ended up in the hospital in Nov. because of it.

Take care of yourself!! We should all love who we are no matter what our size. :blowkiss:

White Rain please don't be so hard on yourself sweetie just start making little steps each day. I have learned that one should not say I'm starting my diet today, one should say I'm going to start eating healthy. My number one goal is to eat nothing white and if one can go by that you will notice a weight loss. Also soda/pop will pack on the pounds I love drinking lots of water and unsweetened tea.

Browneyes I'm so sorry to hear that you were in the hospital this past Nov. I sure hope that they get you on the right thyroid meds you are so right when one's thyroid is out of wack one will start putting on the weight. That's why as we get older we tend to start putting on weight a few pounds here and a few pounds there it's because when woman start going through the change of life they are no long producing the higher levels of hormones.

Reb,
MANY, MANY "skinny" and/or even anorexic looking celebs have cellulite...cellulite is NOT only a symptom of fat people....lots of so-called, skinny people have cellulite (even celebs)...
Cellulite knows NO weight, waist size, race, etc...
In fact (gasp) even SKINNY people who-have-never-had-an-ounce-of-fat have cellulite....
In fact in my drug years when I was way beyond "skinny" I still had cellulite....Reb look in the mirror at your buttocks and back thighs and see if you don't have the same...if not you're lucky b/c even skinny girls (and MANY celebs) have this!!!!

Yep, were are all vulnerable to the "cottage cheese" monster!

:-) It just worked out that way j2mirish if my doctor would not of ordered more testing to be done on me I would of had my surgery in Dec. and that would of given me plenty of time to of recovered from the surgery and to make sure the lapband wasn't going to slip or anything, but since I had to have more testing and a two night sleep study done which my doctor just got the results back last week my surgeon said there was no way he would do my surgery and then two weeks later I take off on a 6 day 5 night cruise. He told me to also enjoy my curise and call it My New Life Change Celebrating party. LOL And I told hubby hey that is a great ideal and then after I lose down to my goal weight then take another cruise for working hard and reaching my goal and maintaining it.

Thank you...I NEVER eat white bread anymore, but I do eat alot of pre-packaged rice...ummm can't resist that 90 second rice! I also am a mayo/sour cream lover...and my mashed potatoes...goodness I know this sounds gross but it tastes great...I put mayo in my mashed potatoes...how much worse calorie/fat wise could it get?
I only drink diet soda....haven't seen any weight loss since switching from reg. soda but I have grown used to the taste now, and if I ever attempt to drink something sweet the sugar is so over-powering I can barely stand it.
Good luck with the lap-band! Please let us know how it goes. I looked into it myself, but am not over-weight enough to get it. Are you really sure (not being rude I hope) this is what you want?
I only ask b/c my hubby's mom had her stomach stapled and while she lost tons of weight she may eat HALF a burger or something and be stuffed! I love food, love to eat, although sometimes (ok, most of the time) I eat not because I am hungry but because I am bored, sad, etc...I am a definite emotional eater.

Southcitymom I sure will let you know. Once I have my surgery I already have my journal set up so that it's ready to go. Once I have my surgery and I let you all know if anyone would like the link I would be more then happy to share it with you. I want to be a inspiration to others who have struggled with a weight problem but might just be afraid to make this discission in considering having the lapband surgery.
