Search for two people, aircraft in Ontario enters fourth day: Canadian Armed Forces | CP24.com
"The search for two people on board a plane that has been missing in northern Ontario has entered its fourth day.

Maj. Trevor Reid, a spokesperson for the Canadian Armed Forces, says the Piper Comanche aircraft left Delhi, Ont., around 3:45 p.m. Thursday and was headed for Marathon, Ont.

Reid says the plane did not reach its destination Thursday, so a joint Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Coast Guard rescue centre launched a search at 8 p.m. that day.''

The search efforts began approximately 60 kilometres north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., in the Wawa, Ont., area, which Reid says was the last known position of the plane.

The military, Canadian Coast Guard, Ontario Provincial Police and the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association are conducting the search using a variety of aircraft.

''Two men were on board a Piper Comanche that left Delhi, Ont., on Thursday at 3:45 p.m. and was bound for Marathon. The aircraft was reported overdue about three hours later by a flight information centre in London, Ont., said senior public affairs officer Maj. Trevor Reid of the Trenton, Ont.-based Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre. A search began at 8 p.m. Thursday.

“Our priority right now is to try and find this aircraft and the two persons on board,” said Reid.
High winds and clouds initially hampered search efforts. Weather conditions improved at about midday Saturday.
“The conditions in the area did start to improve which made it more conducive to flying,” said Reid.
Visibility stood at 15 aeronautical miles, or about 28 kilometres, for air crews on Sunday, conditions Reid described as “excellent.”

The search is focused about 60 kilometres north of the Sault, the last known position for the aircraft. Efforts to find the missing plane are primarily being done by air. The terrain is “quite difficult,” said Reid.
“Very hilly, very rough terrain,” he said. Snow is “very deep,” up to five feet, in some locations.
Electronic searches for the Comanche’s emergency locator transmitter have not been successful.
The search area is being checked multiple times based on several factors including altitude, direction and lighting conditions.

More than a half-dozen aircraft, including four helicopters and a CC130H Hercules airplane, are participating. Civil Air Search and Rescue Association members are serving as spotters on some aircraft.''

Search-and-rescue efforts entered their fourth day Monday in Ontario's north after a plane carrying two men vanished.

John Fehr and Brian Slingerland disappeared on Thursday evening after the plane went missing in the Wawa, Ont. area near Sault Ste. Marie.

The pair took off with the plane, which was purchased by Slingerland, from the township of Delhi in southern Ontario.

From the above story, the sister of one of the missing men said five of her brothers are preparing to join the search.

intended destination was Marathon, Ont., a stop on their way back to Alberta. Fehr was meant to co-pilot the aircraft.

Reimer, who lives in Vienna, Ont., near Aylmer, said her brother earned his pilot's licence recently, and always loved the idea of flying.

"Stomach is all in knots. Everybody, including myself, is just anxiously waiting yet afraid of what we might get, you know, when the news does come," Reimer said.

"Just waiting. Just waiting and not knowing. That's the hardest thing right now, is waiting and not knowing."

Reimer said that when she spoke with Fehr's wife Lisa earlier Monday, she had said the family was "hanging onto hope." The couple, Reimer said, share six children.

''WAWA, Ont. - The wreckage of a small plane that disappeared last month in northern Ontario with two men aboard has been located in Lake Superior Provincial Park.

Ontario Provincial Police say in a news release that one of their helicopters, along with a civilian helicopter, were conducting follow-up searches for the missing Piper Comanche on Saturday when the civilian chopper spotted the crash site near Old Woman Bay.

Det. Const. Trevor Tremblay says it appears the bodies of the two occupants -- John Fehr and Brian Slingerland -- have been located in the wreckage but their identities still need to be confirmed.''
