Pit Bull and Other Dog Attacks.

I agree there are many breeds involved in attacks/bites/aggressive behaviors. How many of those breeds will take the attack further to maime/kill their victim? This is what we need to concentrate on.
IMO, there are several breeds that are quite capable of maiming and killing their victim. I only base that on my father's plastic surgery practice. His patients were almost exclusively attacked by Rottweilers and Dobie's.They were the bred 'attack" dogs of that time.
I blame the owner's not the dogs.

Breeds of dogs I have known due to published reports to kill a person?
St Beranard
German Shepard (my friend just told me about a GS attack where the dog ripped the scalp off his victim!)
Doberman Pincher
Mastiff (bred to fight lions btw)
Rottweiler
Collie

Terrier Mixed dogs of any type can be agressive and kill. One in the news was a 12 lb terrier mix that killed a child in the home.

Lack of responsible "parenting" for fur & non-fur children is at the root of most of these incidents IMO.

My cousin knew people who worked for the SPCA in Oakland. She said in order to get pit bulls adopted they would advertise them as "Oakland Terriers." What do you think about that? Dangerous to say the least.

A few people have told me my mixed dog, Ruby looks part pit bull. I have had three vets tell me no. But with certainty, I can tell you that if I found out this was true I would still keep her. Here is Ruby, the big brown doggie. What do you think?

OT you should start a guess the breed contest, Remember Tybee's? That was so much fun...LOL Do you have a bigger pic, you can pm me if you like.

That's sad. A Pit wearing a heavy chain and having cropped ears is a red flag that it's a fighting dog. Dog fighters will make them wear really heavy thick chains to strengthen their neck muscles. Mine wears a choker collar when he goes out because he pulls and it gives me more control. My Rottie is a gentle giant, my 4 year old takes him out on a leash. (I'm always there too but he walks really slow and keeps looking back to make sure my son is OK)
People dont usually realize that Rotties ARE gentle giants. I have know people with them. One was 110 pounds but loved me so much when I slept over he laid ONTOP of me. I weighed like 90 lbs then. They are on my top 5 for sure.

I realize how many "stats" are out there on the internet...I would have to say I don't find the multitude of those accurate either for or against pit bulls, IMO.

However, this story quotes the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and would consider them a good source for this type of statistic.

Pit bulls at top of fatal attacks

20-year study finds kids under 14 suffer 42% of bite injuries -- 3 of 4 involve family pet

Here is a study from 1979-1998 from the CDC (I am not certain this is the same study as quoted above):

Hey SS, If you notice in the beginning posts. Anything that looks like a pit is called a pit even if it is a boxer or another breed. I do understand there is a problem, but why fault the dogs and many GOOD owners for the bads of others. Why is drinking allowed when it kills so many people everyday, or smoking. I know it isnt the same, but thats how I feel about it, so there:razz: ( of course you know that last part was ment to be funny!)

BTW read my new headline!! If you have dogs you may want to look at what could happen if the ban this breed. In on of my posts (on one of the 4 threads about pits, VICK, dogfighting) It says in Minnasota they want to ban 5 YES 5 breeds.

Every Rottie I've know has been the same way...a big baby.

I happen to love dogs very much. In my years as a proud dog owner, I have owned St. Bernards (2), Rottweilers (2 1/2), German Shepherds (2, but Skye is still alive and well with my mum), English Setter (1), Welsh Corgi (2), Chihuahua (1 female psycho dog!), Australian Shepherd (1), and a Lhasa Apso (1).

I only had one incident with all of the above. None for biting or showing aggressive behavior except for Skye, the german shepherd...and it was totally provoked...she didn't bite, but snapped instead only as a warning.

All of my dogs were loving, lap dogs...even the St. Bernards thought of themselves as such! The Rotts were the biggest babies of them all tho. Very loving and kind always towards everyone including children.

Don't read this SadieMae.

The only dog I was ever attacked by was a Great Dane of all things. She came at me 3 times biting my arm each time. I was in shock and my gf took the 4th bite to the arm as she pushed me out of the way.
But I don't condemn the breed. Most GD's I have ever met are big hug lovable babies!
I think this can be said about many breeds.

I have posted before that we had several English BUlldogs growing up. Chubby little angels. Well we had one that snapped and held us hostage on the kitchen counter until help arrived. It was freaky, they are so docile.

I do not underestimate any breed and would take the same precautions with every breed.

But to other people, those pits are their lap dogs. I used to have one and she was the biggest baby ever. Everyone would love on her and as soon as I said pit they acted as if she changed in 2 seconds.

Rotties, GS, And other bigger breeds will be banned if this happens. Maybe not the next day, but it will happen.

That's exactly how my pit was. A bright ,snuggly, loving baby.

I also have a big dopey boxer. Yesterday, one of the workmen let her out on accident. Right when the mailman was there. She barked barked barked at him. He reported us and now we will probably not get our mail delivered to the house.
Even though I am 100% positive she would not harm a hair on anyone's head, I know that he does not feel the same and so I have to respect that. Frustrating though.

It is VERY uncommon for Danes. At the rescue, there have been a few we can't save and put down because of aggessiveness. Those are the ones that were never socialized with people or animals. They generally were kept as outside dogs. Some in the same conditions can bounce back and become a "Dane" again, a few do not get over how they were treated and can't make the adjustment of being a part of the family.

I just had a question, was it ever proven it was really the dog that assulted the boy, it just seems so bizarre. I have a pit and I love them. This just seems odd for any dog? Did the child not have clothes on?

I will have to take another one and send it. We had to dump are hard drive awile back and I can't figure out how to get old pics back on the computer. I think it's her head shape that makes people think she's pit. She is a reddish brown with white and brown markings on her chest, that is the pointer in her. She also has white socks. I wish I had the money to have her DNA tested like Tybee did. That was so cool.

The thing with some breeds...and most if not all pits...is because it isn't a matter of what they are raised as. When they go into survival mode...their instinct is to kill. With Pits you have a very muscular animal, very agile, very adept at killing. The very reason they use them for dogfighting. It should be your first clue they are NOT good pets. Unpredictable. As well as I know animals, dogs in particular, I regard them as the paranoid schitzophrenics of the animal world. They are set off easily and they DO go until death. There is NO getting around it...sorry...pit lovers. Your breed is and always has been genetically predisposed.

Change Dane to Pit and it's the same story. I think that holds true for any dog. Socialization is the key to a happy, well rounded animal.

Hmm, when my Pit goes into survival mode, you can usually find him with his head stuck under the bed and his rear end in the air. I guess he thinks if he can't see me, I can't see him.

I think we have to agree to disagree, I respect your opinion although I disagree.

We had some work done on our deck at our old house and the contractor left his ladder. This crazy SOB jumped my fence to get his ladder instead of knocking on the door. My Rottie went beserk, he was barking and lunging at him. The guys ladder was against the house, next to the door. There was NO way my Rottie was letting him near that door after the dude jumped into HIS yard.
My Pit was out there as well. He grabbed his ball and ran in circles around the guy trying to get him to play catch.

That is so funny. My pit is so scared when he is in trouble he lays on his back and puts his paws in the air to show he surrenders and then when you tell him to come, he will crawl to you, LOL. I did have one experience when a man caming knocking on my door at one in the morning, I live in the country with houses far between. I thought they were coming to tell me the cows were out as that happens sometimes in the night. Keep in mind my DH works 3rds so it was just me and my two kids. The dogs were sleeping in the kitchen, the pit and my English bulldog. When I went to the door my pit came and he was going nuts lunging at the door, well I was half asleep and opened it, well the guy was standing about 5 feet away, I had my screen door still shut. He said he ran out of gas and if I could give him some money for gas as he had none, well I slammed the door right there and locked it. It was so stupid that I opened it in the first place. He was yelling you better give some money or I will have to leave my truck here. I called my dad who lives down the street and he came right over. When he came the guy was already gone walking down the street, my pit ran out the door, right past my dad and into the front yard damned determined to catch this predetor. Well the guy was gone but he was on him. I was so thankful he was there because that is why the guy stood so far away. He never does this with company but he somehow sensed this guy was bad news, I love him so!

I had a female Pit before and we lived in an apartment. I'd walk her from the apartment through the woods and to a shopping center. One time she was acting really strange and kept waling in circles around me with her hair up and growling. A few seconds later a guy came from behind a tree. She went nuts. She never lunged or anything, she backed up so she was directly in front of me and between the two of us and just snarled. Her lips were curled all the way up and she was growling like I've never heard with her body in a stance that showed if he made one move towards me she was gonna fly. He was a wearing a bandanna tied around his head and he looked grubby. He also had one hand behind his back. He took one look at her and asked if I had a lighter as he backed up. I shudder to think what would've happened if I had been by myself and I can only imagine what he had in the hand behind his back. We had walked through those woods hundreds of times and we had come across people before, sometimes being startled but that was the only time she reacted like that. She knew that man was bad and she wasnt going to take it.

This was in our news today:

Man Saves Neighbor From Vicious Dog Attack

KOTV - 7/21/2007 3:54 PM - Updated 7/21/2007 7:37 PM
A Tulsa man will be honored this week for saving another man's life. Back in April, Michael Cook came to the rescue when a pitbull attacked his neighbor. The News On 6’s Chris Wright reports Cook will receive the Citizen Appreciation Award from Tulsa police on Tuesday, an honor his neighbor says he more than deserves.
Marvin Battle walks with a cane these days, but says considering what happen to him on April 25th, he can live with the limp.

My mom just told me there was a show on animal planet yesterday about truths and myths of animals. One of them was about pits and rots being bad family pets. They said this was a myth. They showed them playing with kids and said they are very good mannered pets when raised by good people. I believe that we hear more about pit attacks then any other dog from the media and some of those dogs aren't even pits, maybe just resemble one such as a boxer or bull terrier. The thing is they are so over bred and bad owners end up with them. I think that people should have to have a license to own a pit and renew it every year. If you don't have one then you should be fined. I think this would keep people that can't really afford them from having them. Has anyone ever seen the dog whisperer. He is a big advocate for powerful breeds. He once had a lady who was scared to death of pits so he threw her a pitbul party and she ended up making him a pic of his pit popeye who lost an eye in a fight because he was so sweet to her. She now likes pits and is no longer fearful.
