Pit Bull and Other Dog Attacks.

I don't blame you at all Southcity. No way would I let any child of mine be in that environment. It's easy for that many dogs to get into a "pack mentality" when excited, even if they are normally mild tempered dogs. Anyway...why would anyone want that many pitts around small children????

That is a problem waiting to happen, IMO. While I love pits it is strongley advised to have only one per household. While I have found it alright for experiances handlers to own 2. I do hope they are all fixed, but even then with having 4 I doubt they came from good breeders, hope I am wrong, but then you get imbreed dogs. And with a small child thrown into the mix, it just isnt good, even for a top notch handler. South I hope you can get through to your friend, if anyone can it would be you.

Indy, you are too sweet. I also agree that it is a recipe for disaster. I talked to her gently about it once (we are not tremendously close) - she has a 7-year-old boy and a 12-year-old daughter. All of her pits are rescues and she is dearly devoted.

I do want to say that I have met some very sweet pit bulls in my time who probably wouldn't hurt a fly - I just don't trust the breed, particularly around kids.

I knew a person here in KC who was minding her own business gardening and was attacked by a pit bull and killed. It is SO sad.

I don't think pit bulls should be banned neccessarily but I believe that there should be very strict laws regarding them.

People kill more people than pit bulls do. :-(

Boy - ain't that the truth!

Makes me feel a little better knowing the children are 7 and 12, but 4 pits.. Even resuce shelters I know only allow one per foster home.

Well, here's a positive development. That 🤬🤬🤬 Michael Vick has been indicted by a grand jury!!

On a personal note, I love the breed. I've spent a lot of time with them and have owned one, so I know their temperment and behavior :)

LOL...OK...I think this is an episode of me being a dumb and ill informed forum owner.

I take it this subject has been discussed before with some rather, shall we say, hot replies?

The main reason I started this thread is because of all the latest stories in the news. Just within the past 30 days.

So...what did I miss? Do I need to lockdown and bring in the teargas before it gets out of hand?
:D The last one was fairly civil so Im guessing this one will be too.

PittBulls scare me and I would never dream of owning one....with that said there are also other breeds that I wouldnt want to own either.

There are pits that are sweet and gentle natured. I know 2 people that have very nice ones. Instead of those sweet dogs being the norm, it seems they are the exception to the breed. But in general, I don't trust them. I totally agree with the poster comparing them to raising a lion. There is something in the breed that's inherited making them vicious or snap. It's not being bred out of them, and that CAN be done. But very few people are selectively breeding pits. Backyard breeders are only interested in getting money. They don't seem to realize the damage they are doing to a potentially wonderful breed.

I wouldnt own one of them either South....I think the breed is banned here anyway....I also dont like the bull mastiff breed.:truce: one got hold of Jake and would have hurt him badly if Hubby hadnt been here to pull them apart.

Presio Canario - did I spell that right? Those dogs scare the heck out of me too.
Right now there are very few of those because they are bred by only a few breeders. Not many people are aware of the breed, at least those "undesirable" type owners. With all the pit bull banning, I do see them becoming the next "gangster" breed of dog, born in backyards. Right now I think breeders are only selling fixed dogs last I read.

Did I miss this in scanning the thread? No one pointed out the physical characteristics of the pit bull that make it so much more lethal when it does attack? The jaw size and muscles on the dog make it much more dangerous when it does bite.

Add that to the overbreeding/aggression issues and you get a dog that can hurt a whole lot more when it bites.

Pits are a dangerous breed and its no wonder they are banned in some cities and if you have one, you could see your home owners insurance being cancelled.

I realize that all breeds of dogs bite. There probably are more dog bites from other breeds than pit bulls. However, pits do account for the most SEVERE dog bites and attacks. More children and adults have been killed by pit bulls than any other breed.

Fighting is in their breeding and history. Just like Thorobreds are bred for racing, Pits have been used for fighting for so long, I really have no idea why someone would want this breed of dog when there are others. What is the dog breed of choice amongst thugs? Pit bulls.
A few years ago I had 6 pit bulls and they were really good dogs around my kids and grand-children.
However the pit is very watchful of it's family and you have to teach them as any other dog that aggression will not be tolerated.
It's all in the training and not the dog.

6 Pitbulls? Did you have them from the time they were puppies? Were you allowed to have that many dogs without a special license?

Did you ever, even in the slightest, feel scared or worried?

(Totally off topic so after I write this I shall ban myself....I just registered my little weenier dog with the AKC..his official name? Sir Puppy Pants. Kids named him. Not me :) )

Oh, Tricia. No self respecting dachshund should be dubbed Sir Puppy Pants, LOL!!! :D

Tricia, I'd like to take credit for that post but it was written by the ASPCA. :blushing: I've never owned a Pit or known anyone except my BIL who owned one. Theirs was a family dog, raised with small children, and never gave them a moment's trouble. He was as gentle and sweet as any dog I've ever met. I wish I had the answers, but hopefully someone like Lion Run will weigh in on this since she trains dogs for a living. I don't think "breed specific legislation" is the answer because Pits aren't the only dogs considered to be aggressive toward humans sometimes (German Shepherds, Rotties, etc.). If we start with one breed, where would it stop??[/quote]
This is why we get along so well!!! We think alike

Lets start with Golden Retrievers!! and see how that goes???
