Following a party which included a number of police officers, on the night of October 26th-27th 2001, from his villa in Swierczynek, Krzysztof Olewnik was kidnapped. Krzysztof was the son of Wlodimierz Olewnik, a meat industry entrepreneur. Two days later, the kidnappers sent a letter to Krzysztof's family, in which they demanded $300,000. On 24th July 2003, the family paid the ransom by having the bag thrown from the AK Route onto Gwiaździsta Street in Warsaw, which ran underneath it. However, on 5th September 2003, the kidnappers killed Krzysztof Olewnik, and his body wasn't discovered until 28th October 2006.

During the investigation, 12 participants in the abduction and those involved in his subsequent detention were arrested. On March 31, 2008, two of the kidnappers involved, Robert Pazik and Sławomir Kościuk were found guilty of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. The leader of the group who kidnapped Krzysztof, Wojciech Franiewski, was also arrested and put under arrest. On the night of June 18th-19th 2007, Franiewski was found dead in his cell. An expert investigating his death wrote: "The manner of carrying out the suicide demonstrates excellent knowledge of human anatomy. The noose was tied in two knots (an unusual practice). [...] This way, the inmate avoided defensive reactions and did not struggle [...] ". Ultimately, Franiewski's death was ruled as a suicide. On 4th April, 2008, Kościuk was found hanged in his cell. Experts found a toxic level of psychotropic substances in Kościuk's blood. The victim also had several broken ribs and strange abrasions on his forearms. On 19th January 2009, Pazik was found dead in his cell, and his death was also ruled as a suicide.

During the investigation, the police were criticised for incompetence and for possibly sabotaging the investigation. For example, even though the kidnappers contacted the family dozens of times, the police never once checked the number from which the call was made. On June 2004, a police car containing 16 files on Krzysztof's case was stolen by unknown people. The car was stolen from the Radom Voivodeship police headquarters in Warsaw. The ransom was handed over on Police Day. Despite assurances from Chief Inspector that the police would follow the Olewniks to the ransom drop-off location, no one followed them. Furthermore, the police did not record the serial numbers of the banknotes given to the kidnappers. In their letters to the family, the kidnappers used police jargon and were very familiar with police work methods, e.g.: "we are losing control over the course of events", "make an effective observation", "you are exposing him to the risk of being captured", the police for some reason neglected and hid a VHS tape recording of Wojciech Franiewski buying a phone at a hypermarket on October 28, 2001, the day after the kidnapping. The concealment of the tape was uncovered in May 2005. The prosecutor's office entrusted the investigation to police officers from the Płock police station, who attended the party. The officers continued to reconstruct the party two months after the kidnapping, as their interrogated colleagues changed their statements about the purpose and organizer of the meeting etc.

A possible motive of the kidnapping involved Wlodimierz Olewnik's meat company. He believed that the criminals’ real aim was to take control of his meat factory. He has also revealed that he received several suspicious business proposals a few years prior to the kidnapping, but turned them down. Some of the proposals were made by politicians and a very high-ranking police officer, who oversaw the early stages of the investigation, where many mistakes were made.

I hope these sources will be good enough because I don't know if they count as being part of the mainstream media. I couldn't find other sources.
