The Zakrzewski family was a family of murderers. The family was made up of Józef Zakrzewski, his wife, his two sons, Czesław and Adam, and an unnamed daughter. The murders were committed only by Józef, Czesław, and Adam.
On the night of 2 to 3 November 1969, in the village of Rzepin, five members of the Lipa family were found murdered in their house. The victims were 45-year-old Mieczysław Lipa; his 27-year-old nephew Władysław and his pregnant 18-year-old wife Krystyna, his 54-year-old sister-in-law Zofia and his 81-year-old mother Maria. The bodies were discovered when the house caught fire. At first, it was believed that the five victims died in the fire, but an investigation revealed that all five victims had skull fractures inflicted with a blunt instrument, as well as cuts and stab wounds. Furthermore, the house was purposely set on fire. Authorities found 40 suspects during the investigation, which included Józef and Czesław. Józef was known for his spats with the mayor, while Czesław was convicted of several robberies.
In February 1970, Czesław was arrested for stealing wood, and he was put in a cell. During his imprisonment, an undercover officer was sent to serve as Czesław's cellmate and to get information out of him. Eventually, in July 1970, Czesław admitted to the murders through a letter to Radio Free Europe. Thanks to this, Czesław was charged with the murders of the Lipa family, while his father and younger brother, Adam, were arrested as accomplices. During interrogation, he revealed three more murders committed by the family. These included: the murder of a dentist, Jan Borowiec, in 1954, the murder of Starachowice native Bolesław Hartung, and the murder of a former mayor, Jerzy Jan Żaczkiewicz, on 13th December 1957. Czesław claimed that the entire family practised a strange ritual before each murder: they issued a "death sentence" to those they felt had wronged them, placing crosses and candlesticks on a table in Józef's room. There, they would pray to the Virgin Mary, and his mother, Halina, would allegedly utter chants.
The trial of the three perpetrators lasted from 22nd March to 28th June 1971. Józef and Czesław Zakrzewski were sentenced to death, while Adam was given 25 years' imprisonment. Józef and Czesław were hanged in February 1972, while Adam took his own life while in prison.
