Plane crashes into stands-Reno

Thoughts and prayers to everyone this is heartbreaking to watch

I am praying for everyone...what a terrible tragedy.

I was not, although I go every chance I get and was planning on being there Sunday. I usually watch from the area where the plane hit.

Talk on pilot message boards is about a mechanical failure involving the elevator, the movable horizontal surface at the tail which controls the pitch attitude.

Going to give blood this morning.

I've seen on foxnews this morning a closeup of a broken elevator on the plane as it came down yesterday. I'm unable to find the same picture yet but I'm looking. It was separated from the tail at one end. Definitely mechanical failure.

Part of the elevator tab missing in this pic. I've seen another pic of the elevator tab hanging, must have been prior to this photo.

The photo appears to be confirmation from eyewitnesses last night that the pilot realized something was terribly wrong and tried to correct the situation as much as possible to avoid the grandstands. Definitely not possible at all if he had been impaired due to a medical situation.

Thankfully he was able to avoid the grandstands, however, perhaps in the future more safety measures need to be in place to keep the aircraft further away from the spectators, especially with aircraft that is being pushed to the limits.

:(

Nine dead in Reno Air Races crash; part of tail missing on aircraft

1:02 p.m. update: "Our job is to identify what caused this accident, so we can make safety recommendations to make sure it does not happen again," said NTSB member Mark Rosekind.

12:59 p.m. update: The NTSB knows that part of the tail is missing on the aircraft that crashed. They have recovered something that may be the part that came off, but have confirmed it was from the aircraft. But they caution people not to draw any conclusions.

what a nightmare. I read a quote from one article saying it was absolute gore, with all the people who were injured. I don't think I could bring myself to look at the videos posted. My imagination is bad enough!

Prayers for all (those who made it away safely as well - they'll probably all have nightmares for ages).
