My deepest sympathy to the families of the deceased. Prayers of healing to those injured and their families.

I haven't seen it on any news, it shows right around the moment of impact and is closer than others I have seen. No gore that I was able to see, but a very dramatic showing of how the plane just turns into little bits in a flash.

Thanks! Has there been any confirmation of the approximate air speed upon impact? Just curious. Last night I heard something like over 400 mph while planes were racing each other.

There has been another crash of another air show plane in W. Va.

CBS/AP) MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A World War II-era plane has crashed and burst into flames on a runway at a West Virginia air show.

Officials reported no injuries Saturday among spectators at the airfield. Details on the pilot's condition were unavailable; dispatchers told CBS affiliate WOWK Huntington that the pilot was killed.

The crash comes a day after a stunt pilot in Nevada crashed at an air show there, killing nine.

They go up to 500 MPH. He was probably full throttle when whatever happened...........happened.

SO horrible!! When I bought my house I didn't realize there was an airport within a quarter mile. THIS is my worst fear. I experienced 9-11 and I have nightmares about a plane hitting my home. Sigh... RIP the victims of this crash... It's way too dangerous to be having these airshows in the proximity of the crowd. I hope they stop this...

Fat chance it will stop, unfortunately. There are many people, spectators and pilots, who are fascinated with this.

They race close to 500 MPH although this was an early heat, the final race for that class is Sunday afternoon. Still they were probably running at least 450 MPH. Given that they are also within about 500 feet of the ground or less that would have been about the speed of impact, the zoom up and down with the small amount of drag are a pretty even energy exchange.

The original planes would cruise about 360 MPH with a 420 MPH or so top speed, the ones they race have been heavily modified with more powerful engines, often shorter wings to reduce drag, and most non essential equipment removed. They also only carry enough fuel to run the race, as you can see there was no explosion from the fuel (this happened about half way through the race).

I imagine he was giving it all it had hoping he could pull up in time.

Thanks! I thought I heard that however wasn't sure. It appeared he would be at a high speed the way the plane literally disintegrated.

Thanks for the additional information regarding the fuel load. The absence of fire was another thing I noticed when watching all the videos.

It is interesting to see the reactions by fellow spectators. I don't know why, but I guess I expected more.....running. Running toward the injured to help, running away from the scene by those nearest who weren't too badly injured. I dunno.....

It appears many of them were just in shock.

I agree, my thought was that they were all so stunned - they didn't know how to react or what to do. In one vid I watched 3-4 men in the bleachers seem to calmly stand up and appear to leave IMO..., Probably in shock. I dunno...

This was just down the road from my Dad's house. My DH used to work for the airport across from the airguard(they share the runway) and we were planning to take our son tomorrow. My sister, her DH and their little boy were there and saw the crash. She called me in absolute shock. It all happened so fast that no one quite knew how to react and she said it was so eerie to have just been snapping pictures of it and the next moment it was nothing but a giant fireball. She said that everyone was in tears and pretty much paralyzed by the scene. At 7 this evening, the crews did a controlled detonation of the pyrotechnics that were left. The black smoke covered the town. It is definitely something that will stay with all of us for a long time.

I haven't read too much about the Reno one, but after the crash here today and hearing my sister's voice immediately after the crash, I can definitely say the only thing that was going on there was absolute shock. My sister just kept saying it was so surreal. She had just snapped some pictures and then the plane was a fireball. While I wasn't there, I was in tears listening to her and the absolute flat monotone sound of her voice. It was almost like she was telling it through someone else's vision of it. No expression, just flat. It breaks my heart that this happened and that my sister and her son(5) had to witness this.

My friend who I have known since high school (35 years) was there. She was standing on the ramp when Jimmy went down. He was a good friend of hers and she attends every year for the full event. Another of her friends standing near her was also killed. She watched Jimmy all the way down and he was trying to miss the stands. Physically she is okay but she says she has images that won't go away. She is devastated. She had been posting pictures f the races right up until the crash so I called as soon as this thread was posted to check on her. She just called to say she is heading home from Reno now.

Region in shock over deadly crash at Reno air races; death toll rises

Federal investigators will need months to piece together what happened during a crash at the Reno National Championship Air Races that killed at least nine people, including the pilot, and injured dozens of spectators.

"This is just the beginning," said Mark Rosekind, a board member with the National Transportation Safety Board.

Officials said the crash created a crater 3 feet deep and about 6 to 8 feet wide on the tarmac, just feet away from where spectators witnessed Jimmy Leeward's World War II-era P-51 slam into the ground Friday afternoon. Some speculated a mechanical malfunction, possibly in the aircraft's tail, caused the crash.

Memorial reflects on Reno Air Races crash victims

4:50 p.m. Update: Jeff Kent was driving to his home in Cold Springs when he heard on his police scanner a transmission from a motorcycle officer who was among the first to see the aftermath of Friday’s plane at the Reno National Championship Air Races.

“He said, ‘There are bodies. Send everything.’”

Kent said he came to a special service held Sunday at the Desert Springs Baptist Church in Reno to prayer for the nine people who died and for the survivors who have been scarred by the horror of that day.

There are 10 dead as of this morning. I've been watching the planes fly home over the Sierras for 3 days now - and run outside to send them blessings for a safe return. We in Reno can't even process this tragedy - just praying & weeping for all the families.
