I don't know how to post the image here, but there's a photo there that looks like LE are also searching inside the barn (photo is about half way down on left hand side of article). Maybe digging up the barn floor?

Yes, that is a forensics truck by the barn in that picture at the link you supplied.

The site for the GPR is looking pretty darn specific to me.

GPR will detect any anomoly. A difference in make-up of the soil, a cavity, a solid object...you name it. If you know how to read the display, you can learn a great deal about what is below. It's essentially a smaller version of the tech used in oil and gas exploration.

That is a good point, because, even if they are looking at the worse case scenario (remains), there could be evidence dropped by the suspect while burying the remains, which could now be in that dirt pile. But, we do have to have faith in LE.

If GPR indicates an object underground, the primary objective is to obtain the buried object, which requires removing the dirt. The soil can be sifted later.
