Pope Benedict XVI resigned-Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina has been elected

Oh dear. The first link has Arinze (way too conservative, and also Ineligible, i think) at better odds than my pick, Aviz. :what:

cardinal Sean is among the top, I see, as is Schoenborn of Austria.

Bono is at the bottom of the list!

I'd love Bono for pope, but I think he is officially Anglican isn't he?

...their mother Iris (née Rankin), a member of the Church of Ireland and their father, Brendan Robert "Bob" Hewson, a Roman Catholic. His parents initially agreed that the first child would be raised Anglican and the second Catholic. Although Bono was the second child, he also attended Church of Ireland services with his mother and brother.

The Guardian tends to be pretty tabloidish. I take most of what they say with a good dosage of salt.
Respectfully disagree; the Guardian is one of the finest broadsheets in the English-speaking world, and is widely considered as such. Perhaps you are thinking of the Mail.

Possibly so. But to me most British newspapers come across as tabloidish.

"When in doubt, blame the gays!" It's on page 1 in the Vatican handbook.

But to most gay people, the Vatican is like the Empire in Star Wars: a secretive and malevolent but entirely fictitious entity.

Cdl Sean's name is being floated in a few places.

I met him once when he was in office in the Fall River diocese. Very warm and humble. I like the idea of a Capucin as Pope, and especially one as sympathetic to issues of immigration and poverty as he has been.

I just LOVE this man---when I think of how a leader of the Catholic Church should be, it is him. He is so gentle and humble.

Pope gives final Sunday blessing before resigning

By FRANCES D'EMILIO, AP

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI bestowed his final Sunday blessing of his pontificate on a cheering crowd in St. Peter's Square, explaining that his waning years and energy made him better suited to the life of private prayer he soon will spend in a secluded monastery than as leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

On Thursday evening, the 85-year-old German-born theologian will become the first pope to have resigned from the papacy in 600 years.

Sunday's noon appearance from his studio window overlooking the vast square was his next-to-last appointment with the public of his nearly eight-year papacy. Tens of thousands of faithful and other admirers have already asked the Vatican for a seat in the square for his last general audience Wednesday...

VATICAN CITY -
Pope Benedict XVI gave his pontificate's final Sunday blessing from his studio window to the cheers of tens of thousands of people packing St. Peter's Square, but sought to reassure the faithful that he wasn't abandoning the church by retiring to spend his final years in prayer.

The 85-year-old Benedict is stepping down on Thursday evening, the first pope to do so in 600 years, after saying he no longer has the mental or physical strength to lead the world's 1.2 billion Catholics...

Pope changes conclave rules, allows earlier start

By Associated Press

Vatican City — Pope Benedict XVI has changed the rules of the conclave that will elect his successor, allowing cardinals to move up the start date if all of them arrive in Rome before the usual 15-day transition between pontificates...

Malachy’s prediction has been juxtaposed with the vision of Pope Pius X, who served from 1903 to 1914, and who claimed to have foreseen another pope, also named Pius, fleeing an apocalyptic scene: “What I have seen is terrifying! Will I be the one, or will it be a successor? What is certain is that the pope will leave Rome and, in leaving the Vatican, he will have to pass over the dead bodies of his priests! Do not tell anyone this while I am alive.”

So, as we await a new leader for the largest denomination of the world’s largest religion, at least one saint and one former pope advise that things are about to get bumpy. If “Peter the Roman” is indeed elected, and if he chooses the name Pius (which would make him Pius XIII), watch this space.

Odds today from Paddy Power:

Scola of Italy and Uganda's Turkson neck and neck at 3/1. Italy's Bertone 4/1. Four of top six are Italian. Canada's Oulett still in race at 8/1. U.S.'s O'Malley 25/1, Dolan 40/1.

Ugh, Bertone is in third (or is that second, past the tie for first?). He has always struck me as somewhat of a snake.

Regrettably, my Brasilian pick is down to 60/1.

My tolerable pick of Cdl Sean is still a possibility.

Still, if I were betting, as I've been saying from the beginning, my money would be on an Italian.

Omg, I just noticed that the fictional Fr Dougal of Father Ted fame is now on the list, right at the bottom above Bono!

  • #159
Let's go Bono! And hey, I guess Cardinal Arinze from Nigeria can be Pope...I think his time has passed, though.

I just know an Italian will be put in there.....

The odds of the next pope naming himself Paddy Power are 500/1.
