hmm, ok i did miss the procession. They just gave the "extra omnes" ("everybody out") and have shut the doors.

Now on to chimney watch!

I'm watching live coverage on CNN. The pageantry is awesome! The doors of the Sistine Chapel were closed, and the voting has begun. Smoke-watch is on - what the CNN commentators are calling the wait.

I'm tired of the secular media always referring to us as a troubled church or a church in crisis or some other melodramatic BS. We've survived 2,000 years and the gates of Hell will not prevail against us. We're going to be just fine, thank you.

Because "Church in crisis!" is a much better sound bite than "Church continues to blunder its way through history, as always.". :D

O'Malley has now slipped ahead of Oulette an is tied with Bertone at 12/1 on Paddy Power!

I have had o'Malley as bishop twice - once in the Fall River diocese, once in the Boston Archdiocese. Maybe third time is charm? :)

I meant to add - DK if the commentary bothers you, the Pope App from the Vatican is free, and so far has been blessedly free of commentary, secular and religious both!

Vatican TV

ROME (CNN) -
Black smoke has emerged from the chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel, signifying that no pope has been chosen on the first ballot of this conclave.

Black smoke means no pope. White smoke, success...

I realize that, but you have to be a member of the College of Cardinals to vote, no? That's why I thought I'd have to wear a disguise to vote for you.

Oh man Nova.

You should of caught the first plane out.

Waves to Nova to say hi!!! :seeya:

I don't doubt that the Church will survive, but you've got to admit the bureaucracy hasn't done the institution any favors of late.

I had my red cape all ready until I remembered that Church Latin isn't pronounced the same as the Latin I took in college. (Church Latin is heavily influenced by Italian.) I knew then I would never pass as a cardinal.

Sorry, DK.

Nova, I noticed today during the oath taking that a Couple of the cardinals used the classical pronunciation rather than Church - you would have been fine!

I have to admit I prefer church Latin, and the Italians and the Spanish speakers sound the best. The Americans were all pretty horrible sounding! :giggle:

OMG too funny!!

What about the red shoes though?

It's not the first time in history the leaders haven't done the Church any favors, yet She survives, anyways, by the Grace of God.

I prefer church Latin myself. But I was taught classical, which never sounds (to my ear anyway) like a language anybody actually spoke.

More black smoke this morning. Next voting results should come sometime around 5 Rome time, I think (so noonish eastern).

Fwiw I'm not expecting a result until the weekend. However, I read one blog entry from someone who has in the past stayed at the Domus Sanctae Marthae, where the bishops are being put up, and he says that there is no TV and no alcoholic beverages, so maybe that'll be enough for some bishops to push for a fast conclusion? :D
