Pope Francis has died, Vatican says, 21 Apr 2025

The crowd was more quiet than last time. I wonder if some were disappointed an American was chosen.
It does seem to have a feeling of anticlimax about it.

Given his age, we could be looking at a 20 year pontificate - which in itself could present problems if things don't go well.

I think it's an inexact description to say that we now have an American pope. He was born in Chicago and is a U.S. citizen but he has lived and served in Peru/Latin America and at the Vatican for many years and is as much a citizen of Peru as he is the U.S. I think over time, he will be identified more as a Latin American pope than an American pope.

Robert Prevost
has been named as the new Pope
and will become Francis' successor
following two days of voting inside the Sistine Chapel.

The Pontiff,
who will be named
Pope Leo XIV,
is the 267th Pope,
becoming the religious leader of Catholics across the globe
and history's first American Pope.

Why would this be any different than the 12 year pontificate that the late Pope Francis, an Argentinian by citizenship have.

Because a lot can happen in 20 years, and there was a feeling, I think, that John Paul II's reign was just too long.

Commentator is saying he was appointed a cardinal in 2023. That's only two years ago.
Pope Francis brought him to the Vatican and made him a Cardinal. Prior to that, he was an Archbishop in Peru. And he also served as the head of the Augustinian Order.

Because he served in a very prominent position under Pope Francis in the Vatican (vetting of bishop appointments), he was well known and supported by the voting Cardinals.

"In his first words, Pope Leo said
'Peace be with you',
offering a message of peace
and dialogue 'without fear.'

The Pontiff recalled
he was an Augustinian priest,
but that he was above all a Christian
and a bishop,
'So we can all walk together'.

He addressed the crowd in Italian and Spanish, not in English.
More a son of Peru than of the United States, which he left when he was young.
on dutch tv a friend of the new pope happened to be present when it was announced. there were questions in the studio about whether the new pope could be influenced by the trump administration when he has to make decisions, and his friend said definitely not!

I would hope that a pope would not be influenced by any administration when he has to make decisions.

" 'This is a Pope
who is known all over the world as an Augustinian
and a missionary.

An open man who understands the issues of the Church'
-
this is what the chairman of the Polish Episcopate said
about Cardinal Robert Prevost from the United States,
who was elected Pope today
and took the name Leo XIV."

:)

I have very positive impression of the new Pope.

'Peace be with you all'
said Pope Leo XIV to the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square.

'This is the first greeting of the Risen Christ,
the Good Shepherd who gave his life for our sins.

I too would like this greeting,
the greeting of peace, to enter our hearts'
said the new Holy Father."
