Pope Francis has died, Vatican says, 21 Apr 2025

Pope Francis could resign over ill health says Italian cardinal.

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, the former head of the Vatican’s department of cultural affairs, raised the possibility as the 88-year-old pontiff spent his sixth day in hospital battling pneumonia in both lungs.

He said the Pope had always been “decisive” and hinted that he might voluntarily step down as head of the Roman Catholic Church if his health restricted his ability to fulfil his duties.

"Vatican gives update
on Pope Francis
as pneumonia-stricken leader remains in hospital.

In an early morning update given today,
the shortest since he was admitted,
the Vatican said
'Pope Francis rested well'."

...But doctors have warned that the main threat facing the 88-year-old Francis would be the onset of sepsis, a serious infection of the blood that can occur as a complication of pneumonia. As of Friday, there was no evidence of any sepsis, and Francis was responding to the various drugs he is taking, the pope’s medical team said in their first in-depth update on the pope’s condition.

“He is not out of danger,” said his personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone. “So like all fragile patients I say they are always on the golden scale: In other words, it takes very little to become unbalanced.”...

For someone like that, it's actually not an idea to be prepared anyway, and of course to know his own wishes.
...Pope Francis, who approved the revised rites in April, received the first copy of the printed volume on Nov. 4, according to Vatican News.

The revisions reflect Francis’ desire to simplify the rites and, in some instances, to dispense with centuries-old traditions whose ancient roots had become difficult even for Vatican experts to decipher.

But while certain details have changed, the substance of the papal funeral has not: It remains a public event marked by the kind of attention and distinctive protocols one would expect to honor an important world leader.

This is still the case, even though Francis wanted to ensure that “the funeral of the Roman Pontiff is that of a pastor and a disciple of Christ, and not of a powerful person of this world,” as Archbishop Diego Ravelli, master of pontifical ceremonies, has explained...

"The statement says
that in the morning the Pope
had a prolonged asthma crisis,
which required the administration of oxygen.

Franciszek is conscious,
but suffered more than the previous day,
the statement added.

According to Corriere della Sera,
which quotes a statement from the Holy See,
'at the moment the prognosis is uncertain'.
Doctors at the hospital explained that Francis 'asked for the truth to be told'.

Significantly, on Saturday morning Vatican reported that the Pope had 'rested well'.

This was the shortest information given since Francis' hospitalization began on February 14.

Vatican sources said
the Pope would not lead Sunday's Angelus prayer from the hospital,
but the text of his reflections would be released.

The faithful from various countries have been coming to the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome for another day,
where they leave candles and flowers in front of the statue of St. John Paul II
and pray for the health of Pope Francis,
who has been staying there for eight days."

ROME — Pope Francis was in critical condition Saturday after he suffered a long asthmatic respiratory crisis that required high flows of oxygen, the Vatican said.

The 88-year-old Francis, who has been hospitalized for a week with a complex lung infection, also received blood transfusions after tests showed a condition associated with anemia, the Vatican said in a late update.

“The Holy Father continues to be alert and spent the day in an armchair although in more pain than yesterday. At the moment the prognosis is reserved,” the statement said.

Earlier, doctors said that Francis was battling a pneumonia and a complex respiratory infection that doctors say remains touch-and-go and will keep him hospitalized for at least another week...

One of my favorite memories of my mom was when we went to Vatican City, and we made it just in time to receive his blessing after his Wednesday service. She was just gazing up at the giant screen of him and looked positively joyful. That was ten years ago and right before she started chemo for colon cancer - she beat it a few years before she passed <3 She loved Pope Frank.

I've also been thinking of my sweet late husband. We visited Italy several years before he passed and the Vatican was so amazing. I'm so glad we were able to experience it together.

"A wave of prayers around the world

for the health of Pope Francis.

Pope Francis,
who is staying at the Gemelli Clinic,
is receiving assurances of prayers for his health from people and institutions from all over the world.

A triduum of Holy Masses for the Holy Father
is to be celebrated in his native Argentina.

The chief rabbi of Rome has sent wishes of support.

Prayers are also coming from:
the United States, Europe and South American countries.

Argentina at the Pope's side

Assurances of prayer are coming from Argentina,
Francis' home country.

In a note to the faithful,
the bishops call on all communities to unite in prayer for the Pope's health."
