Pope Francis has died, Vatican says, 21 Apr 2025

<modsnip - quoted post was political>
It sounds to me like Pope Leo (when he was a Bishop) was speaking about the church's doctrinal position when he was discussing these issues with his fellow bishops. On these doctrinal positions of the church, Pope Leo and Pope Francis were in agreement. I don't see any bigotry here, and not sure what Pope Leo would be apologizing for.

I have no doubt that Pope Leo will be in agreement with Pope Francis on welcoming all people into the church, and promote outreach to various populations of individuals that are marginalized in society.

It is obvious and well known
that Church hierarchs present Church's Doctrine.

There is one thing that I wonder about, and that is why Pope Leo spoke in several languages when he addressed the faithful in St Peter's Square and around the world on the Vatican balcony, but he didn't include English.

I wonder if other recent popes made any of their remarks in their native language when they were elected pope and addressed the crowds in St Peter's Square? Did Pope Benedict say anything in German? Did Pope John Paul II say anything in Polish? Just wondering.
There are probably a dozen subtle reasons for that, like others noted, Americans would likely be in the extreme minority in that crowd. So many reasons behind these decisions, and I suspect many Italians and other Catholics were offended by the US President posting a fake photo of himself as Pope just after Francis died. It offended me and I'm not currently of that faith.

After it was announced that Cardinal Robert Prevost — who now goes by the papal name Pope Leo XIVwas elected as the 267th leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Portillo's unveiled a new menu item in his honor.

"In the name of the gravy, the bun, and hot giard, we introduce The Leo: a divinely seasoned Italian beef, baptized in gravy and finished with the holy trinity of peppers — sweet, hot, or a combo," the Windy City-based restaurant chain announced on Friday, May 9 via a press release shared with PEOPLE.

They added, "It’s our original sacred sandwich, bold, unapologetically flavorful, and made in honor of a moment that’s historic for Portillo’s hometown."...
Hilarious! And "Pope Rob" would probably order one.

"A clear declaration by the new Pope regarding Ukraine.

Unambiguous words were spoken.

Pope Leo XIV made his debut on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica,
leading the Regina Coeli prayer.

On Sunday, May 11,
his words to the faithful were full of hope and spiritual support.

'I appeal to the leaders of this world.
Never again war',
said the new Pope,
addressing his words to
the 'beloved Ukrainian people'.

Commentators had predicted
that the Pope might refer to current challenges, such as the war in Ukraine,
which is a continuation of Vatican's previous appeals for peace.

It is therefore not surprising
that Leo XIV touched on the subject,
referring to events from World War II.

'Brothers and sisters,
the terrible tragedy of World War II ended 80 years ago, on May 8,
after causing 60 million victims'
Leo XIV said."

Re the Pope's favourite sport - tennis

" 'I consider myself a pretty good amateur tennis player'.

Although his papal duties will certainly not allow him to play regularly,
it is hard not to see this passion as more than just recreation.

Tennis for the Pope is also a way to maintain health
physical and mental.

The fact that the Pope is a tennis fan
has not gone unnoticed by the world's top tennis players.

During the Italian Open in Rome -
almost at the same time as the announcement of the papal election -
his image was shown on the central screen at the Foro Italico stadium."

"It was fitting
that when Pope Leo XIV was elected
the Italian Open tennis tournament was being played just up the road from the Vatican.

Greek pro Stefanos Tsitsipas,
who has been ranked as high as No. 3,
said he would be happy
to hit some balls with Leo if he finds the time."

As I already wrote
"Radio Voice" :D

REGINA CAELI

The antiphon itself consists of four lines:

Regina caeli, laetare, alleluia;
Quia quem meruisti portare, alleluia,
Resurrexit, sicut dixit, alleluia:
Ora pro nobis Deum, alleluia.
Queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia.
The Son you merited to bear, alleluia,
Has risen as he said, alleluia.
Pray to God for us, alleluia.

Talking about singing.....

These are children from my country - Poland
playing and singing for Pope Francis in Vatican :)

A song paying homage to St. Mary.

"Madonna
how good to be your child
Let me find shelter in your arms..."

And the other half clearly shows a man in touch with his Louisiana heritage.
That may be part of the reason the fleur-de-lis is included, but according to Catholic News Agency regarding the symbolism of Pope Leo's Coat of Arms, the fleur-de-lis on a blue background symbolizes the Virgin Mary.

This return to traditional elements accompanies Leo’s papal coat of arms. The heraldic design features a fleur-de-lis on a blue background, symbolizing the Virgin Mary, while the right side displays the Sacred Heart of Jesus resting on a book against a cream background.

This is based on the traditional symbol of the Augustinian Order.

The fleur-de-lis has particular significance in Catholic iconography as a symbol of purity and the Virgin Mary.

Cardinal David of the Philippines shares rare photos inside Casa Santa Marta before and after the Conclave that elected Pope Leo; each Cardinal was given an alarm clock. Each room was set to ensure deep prayer and reflection. Post-conclave dinner menu included.
