Pope Francis has died, Vatican says, 21 Apr 2025

I am interested in the general direction of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis was leaning to be a bit more balanced and progressive than the previous Popes. Although, Pope John Paul was amazing, during his short tenure.

I think Pope Francis was ready to go. That is why he pushed himself the last few days.

And, of course, we have people stating this was "predicted" and is all part of some great plan, that culminates in the end of the earth in 2027.

Do you mean Benedict? John Paul II was pope for nearly thirty years.

"The cardinals have decided.

Vatican has announced the date and time of the funeral.

The funeral of Pope Francis
will take place on Saturday, April 26.

The solemn funeral Mass
of Bishop Francis of Rome will begin at 10 am.

On Wednesday,
the coffin with the body of Holy Father Francis will be transferred from the chapel in the Casa Santa Marta to the Vatican Basilica."

will this thread also be used for the election of the next pope?

this article names some possible candidates and tells a bit about each of them
It's possible, I believe this thread was renamed when Francis passed, before it was labelled with his illness.

I read through a who's who earlier, and it was much what I should have expected. Less dominated by European candidates than I thought it would be, but attitudes what I would expect, more or less, for high ranked Catholics above the age of seventy.

will take place on Saturday, April 26,
in St. Peter's Square in Vatican.

The ceremony will be attended by numerous world leaders
who have expressed their readiness to pay tribute to the late Pope.

US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump
have confirmed their attendance at the funeral.
Trump expressed his condolences, calling the Pope
'a good man who worked hard and loved the world'.

Leader Emmanuel Macron will also be present.
The French president emphasized that Pope Francis was
'always on the side of the most defenseless and weakest'.

Others who have confirmed their attendance include:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky,
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni,
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier
and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Poland will be represented by President Andrzej Duda and the First Lady."

yes! pope francis has chosen a lot more cardinals from developing countries. this website is quite interesting and it also has an interactive map and you can see how many cardinals from each country or continent can vote, who they are, where they stand on different issues, etc.

it also has a list of all the cardinals and which ones they consider papibili (“pope-able”, likely candidates) though it’s apparently very hard to predict and pope francis wasn’t on many papibili lists.

I think King Charles is perhaps in bad shape.
King Charles was in Italy earlier this month and visited the Pope. He was seen with his family at church on Sunday for the Easter service.

I think it is protocol. The Mail article contained this information:

The decision is in keeping with modern tradition and will be seen as a major milestone in William's role as a global statesman and future king.

Charles as the Prince of Wales went to Pope John Paul II's funeral, representing his mother the late Queen, in 2005.

Queen Elizabeth II never attended the funeral of a pontiff, the head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Kensington Palace said: 'The Prince of Wales will attend the funeral of Pope Francis, on behalf of His Majesty The King.'

It came less than 24 hours after Pope Francis had delivered his Easter message with assistance from aides.

I wonder if this is a tradition as the Head of the Church of England does not attend the funeral of a Roman Catholic Pope.

Maybe since King Henry VIII split from the Catholic church.

"In a preface for Cardinal Angelo Scola's new book, titled
'Awaiting a New Beginning.
Reflections on Old Age',
Pope Francis wrote that
'we must not be afraid of old age'
and
'must not fear embracing becoming old',
but instead strive to live life on earth with
'grace and not with resentment'."

That is quite touching really. He clearly knew he was in his last hours. It is wonderful that he got to take that last ride and make a last "goodbye." I find it a bit weird that the article noted that he was not afraid to die. Of course he wasn't afraid to die. He knows he was headed to his heavenly reward.
