that was one persistant snake Sweetie...its actually illegal to kill snakes here as they are all protected and it carries a hefty fine if caught:rolleyes:[/quote

The first time it was in the shop and hubby could not get it where he could shoot it with out messing something up. The 2nd time f-i-l ran it off before I got back out side with the shot gun. After being in my bathroom it was just a matter of seeing it again. My neighbor had fit because we killed it. I told her I would not kill another snake if she would keep them all at her house out of my site. I do not think it illegal to kill snakes here. They claim we do not have poisons snake in this part of Kansas but I do not belive them I know what a rattle snake looks like and my husband killed one in my yard. I belive the best snake is a dead one, but then I was raised in oklahoma with rattle snakes, cotton mouths, and copper heads. My aunt has a 6 foot python in her house I stand outside when I go visit her.

I don't know about Kansas but several species of snake are illegal to kill.

I read this yesterday on FOX.

I feel horrible for the children and the little dog....the pics creep me out...but the snake was just being a snake.

IMO, the family should have done more to protect their doggie.
The dog and the children would have been in bed with me at night and I wouldn't have let my eyes off of them until the snake was found and delivered somewhere safe for the snake....jmo

I'm a snake lover and consider them to be one of the most demonized, misunderstood living things ever.
They are beautiful beings and so important to our eco system

I would LOVE to own a blonde burmese python...but I just know I couldn't stand to feed the little mice to it.

Ah, dingo, you surprise me! That third Mad Max movie was for American multiplexes. It's the first two that are brilliant!

And it's the first two that teach us Aussies can't be expected to protect their children and pets when they're so busy dressing up in 80s' S&M garb and fighting to the death over "petrol."

I adore snakes, but if I had small children, I'd relocate the snake the first time I saw it. It got the dog - boo hoo - but just as easily could have bitten one of the kids.

So the snake ate the dog AND slept in it's bed?! Sounds like a guy I know... :D

Kidding... How sad for the little dog and the family.

I agree w/ everything you said! I too wouldn't let the dog or children out of my sight if a snake that size kept showing up. Poor dog!

My dh just got an albino corn snake, thank goodness he'll stay small.

If I saw a snake, it does not really matter if it was 16 inches or 16 feet, Cyberlaw would be on the floor and a) fainted out of fright and shock or b) having a massive heart attack

If I visited Australia, a) I probably would never leave the hotel due to fear or b) learn to "have a great time, let down my guard and then have a heart attack when I see something like a 16 foot python snake.

Or better luck: In the papers reporting my "freak" death, the paper will probably say something like: We have never had a death related to this animal, we usually never see them, but for some odd reason, the animal or insect or whatever "stalked" and targeted this Canadian tourist. This has never happened in the entire history of Australia and has animal experts baffled.

BTW, ditto for Florida.

Our sympathy to her husband and three kids......

This is very sad but I just cannot get behind these sentiments that this snake should have been killed. For what? For being a snake? Snakes are solitary animals and try to avoid people. Unfortunately because of the encrouchment upon their natural habitats they (and most other wild animals) are being forced to hunt outside their natural habitats because they are starving. Don't get me wrong - I am a huge animal lover and would be absolutely devastated if something like this happened to my family. From what I have read, however, it sounds like the owners did not seem to take great lengths to protect their dog.
But this idea of people butchering snakes who come into their yards is gross. Snakes are an important part of our ecosystem and they have been around a lot longer than we have. The truth is we are the ones who are encrouching on their natural habitats and there has to be a mutual respect between humans and wild animals. Animals are being put into a position where their roaming and hunting ranges are being dramatically reduced and they are being forced to go outside their natural habitats to find food because they are starving. If their habitats were not being encrouched upon due to urban sprawl and deforestation they would not be in this precarious position.

That's terrible, why were the children close enough to the snake to witness this, and why didn't the family call for help about it right away? They will easily eat a small child as well as dogs or other pets.
Could they have shot the snake in self defense?

Very well said! Thank you.

If theres a snake in my yard its going to end up dead...sorry.

I too love snakes and love seeing them in my yard. My neighbor - not so much - he's always hacking them to pieces. Now - if I were to find a poisonous snake in my yard, I would kill it because of the kids and dogs, but I've yet to see any.

Same neighbor did find and kill a nest of baby rattlers in his yard though - so I am sure they are around...

I don't like snakes at all but the funniest thing I ever heard was someone who lived just outside the park ...
They called the park and said "YOUR snake is in my yard!"
Like its a zoo and they let their snake loose??

Not Black Racers! I love seeing them around because I know they keep the pigmy rattlers away.

Most of our snakes are poisonous and can kill you and your pets very quickly..maybe thats why theres not too many snake loving Aussies:)

Youve gotta love an Aussie movie Nova.:blowkiss:

As you know, I truly do! :blowkiss:

My list of all-time top ten movies would include Mad Max: Road Warrior and at least two other Aussie films.

Of course, thanks to Aussie movies, I'm too scared to ever visit your country, but everything has its price, eh? ;)
