Questions from a Switcher

"Where did we first get the idea that PR and her sisters were molested in their childhood? Did we just jump to that conclusion because somehow it seemed like a good idea at the time?"

The idea arose mostly from Patsy's reaction to that particular question. She becomes a cringing, cowering little girl. You almost expect her to cry for her mother.

As usual, our emotional interpretations of everything about PR, much of which I have to admit is very strange, are in the eye of the beholder, influenced by our own personalities we're projecting onto PR.

We could just as easily jump to the conclusion that going to her father's house to die meant there had never been any trouble between them. (Or, I know, you might say she just forgave him, but there's no proof of any of those interpretations, just speculation, like Trip Dumuth about the secret visit he claimed would have been announced in a greeting card. We're not alone; the pro's sometimes do it too, without thinking things through with enough logic.

Well, it doesn't help that her dad had an aparetment close to her in Boulder which Nedra did not share...

Well, okay. I don't claim to know why that was or that it means nothing. How would I or anyone know?

But also just maybe he'd had an extramarital affair with another woman, for all we know,(not a strong opinion, just a possibility. Didn't he remarry pretty soon after Nedra's passing, probably meaning he had normal adult tastes in the romance dept.? Am I making the point that we can't just pretend to know every little thing by jumping to conclusions?

I wanted to reply to NP who gave a well-written description of PR in some other thread, but computer hung up and I had to sign off and do a scan so lost it. Maybe I can put it here and she'll see it. Everything about PR was evidently true, but for every effect there's some cause, usually hidden and we really can't prove our guesses about what the causes were. Too bad we don't have much of the evidence at all.

A good Jessica Fletcher episode was on while I was doing my scan, early Saturday morning. I thought there would just be cartoons.

SD - Where can I find Patsy's reaction as you say. I have the NE's book on transcripts. I don't seem to remember her cowering. Can you help with that?

Many thanks for everyone's thoughts on the matter. SuperDave was particularly thought provoking and, in the final analysis, maybe he's right. It's tough using logic to understand something that may be intrinsically illogical.

As to John and sexual abuse, I find it quite plausible that John was molesting JBR, and that that could have provided his motive for covering for Patsy.

However, I find it very difficult to believe that he may have accidentally killed JBR in a sex game. I've seen those EA theories about the case but it just makes no sense to play a game like that with a 6 y.o., especially if you're her parent. A kid couldn't have the self-control not to struggle as you strangled her. It would take an adult to say to himself, "Ok, I'm going to struggle for breath, but this will give me greater pleasure..." When you read Karr's descriptions of his EA fantasies, they're totally implausible. (He blathers on and on about how JBR enjoyed EA and whatnot.)
ITA Keith. No one can tell me that a six-year-old was into kinky stuff like EA. Which is why I don't believe that JB was killed in any kind of sex game. The garrote contraption was fashioned for pure staging purposes.

But this doesn't mean JB hadn't been the victim of chronic sexual abuse by a family member.

It was on the videotape of that incident. Maybe acandyrose can help you out.
