Recession is fueling rise in sexual assaults, abuse of children

The Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault, MOCSA, has seen an increase in sexual violence and increased brutality in the attacks, resulting in rising demand for services ranging from hospital advocacy for rape victims to treatment of child sexual abuse.
This outcome is not entirely unexpected: The factors that have always contributed to sexual violence are exacerbated by the recession.

Be more vigilant than ever. Under normal circumstances, one in four girls and one in seven boys will be sexually abused during childhood and one in six women has been the victim of rape or attempted rape. These risks are higher than ever today. Be aware of the recessions effect on sexual violence and any decisions that could put you or others especially children at risk.
