CINCINNATI (WXIX) - The remains of an Ohio man killed in Germany during World War II have been identified.

Harold D. Pittis, 21, of Freeport, was accounted for on March 20, 2024, which is 79 years since he died on Feb. 8, 1945, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA).

Pittis, assigned to Company G, 2nd Battalion, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, was with his regiment as they engaged in a “fierce” fight near the town of Biesdorf, Germany, the DPAA explained.

The 21-year-old was killed in action on Feb. 8.

The DPAA (dpaa.mil) has identified 119 servicemen since January 1 of this year alone. I wish their work (and the work of similar groups in other countries, like Canada's Casualty Identification Program) was more widely known.
