Bonine for Kids should not be used in CHILDREN younger than 6 years old without checking with a doctor; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).

???
Didn't the idiot parents read the freakin box directions about dosages, reactions?????:banghead::banghead:

At least you can put his words into print :) My DH and his BF took the BF family's 42' from MI to Bermuda to their vacation home over 20 years ago- and he still states it was the most scared he has ever been . ( he teaches HS- not much scares him).

His response *&%! #++!*&%.... x 10

I'm angry about these parents, especially Charlotte. How selfish and self-centered. She blogs against parents who won't vaccinate, but look what she did!! They totally endangered those children. And now that our government has rescued them (risking personnel in the process), the parents defend their actions!! They haven't even learned from this!

Guess what? When you're a parent, you ensure the safety and health of your kids. It's a priority. That includes providing food, shelter, healthcare, education and safety. These bozos put everything into their pipe dream, and now due to their selfishness and negligence, they have nothing! No home for their family...and now they need donations....

I'm appalled by the number of supporters who are commenting on her blog. Really? You support endangering helpless children?

That little girl could have died. The rescuers could have died. The entire family could have died. But they "defend themselves" and their stupid, half-baked decision to sail out into the middle of nowhere with tiny children. <modsnip>

A phrase from Driving Miss a Daisy comes to mind: "Sometimes I think you ain’t got the sense God gave a lemon”.

The more I read about this case, the more I wonder if it was C in a marriage controlled by a dominate husband? An abusive marriage where the husband has verbally abused her, degraded her, and taken her self image away?

Yes, we all have dreams as E did when they met. As time and years go by, too often we realize that the dreams are not going to happen. From what I have read, E was not one of those to give up, JMO. How many do we know that married thinking they 'would change' that person? Not saying that is the case in this situation, but I don't see C truly buying into the master plan! JMO

I'm thinking they probably mean clothing for the family. Even though I am appalled at what they've done, I can't object to people giving them clothes to tide them over. Surely they didn't have all their cash with them. They would have needed something to draw on when-if-they ever made port.

there is already a funding site set up

ETA: the boat had to be sunk, as it was not seaworthy. No media yet on why they actually turned on their emergency beacon- the infant's illness or due to the boat taking on water.

2 Tots, a Sailboat and a Storm Over Parenting

James Gardner, 56, a fisherman from Oceanside, Calif., who said he had spent 45 years on the sea and now owns a bait shop near the docks, called the decision to take such young children on such a journey “ridiculous.”

“Teenagers, maybe, but kids of those ages — I think it was asinine,” Mr. Gardner said in an interview. “He put his family at risk. Any Joe can take a Coast Guard course and you are a captain — it is just above a cereal box certification.”

Sounds like he didn't want kids

Where does the money come from to support this family?

Eric Kaufman said he works for a financial services company. Charlotte Kaufmen is a former high school English and Social Studies teacher and the founder of Red Charlotte Etsy shop, which sells baby products online.

The funding site is interesting. I hope they get nothing. I imagine they are working the "dream" angle to appeal to other "dreamers' out there who don't want to be lemmings and just be a "boring old mom and dad."

As far as donations fpr clothing and not having anywhere to go, that's a bunch of baloney. They ahve family and obviously can turn to them now. Where are their friends?

IMO It's totally a publicity stunt.

This quote (below), from the article cited above, says it all for me:

Dee, Montclair, NJ 8 hours ago
As a veteran sailor who has sailed across the Atlantic and around the world I will say that the most important part of any sailing journey is safety and crew. On a long distance journey, every crew member has to be able to sail the boat, navigate and facilitate an evacuation in the event of an emergency. In my experience emergencies happen all the time on sailboats, especially on long crossings. I have been lost at sea, dismasted, run aground, I have hit forty five foot swells and fifty knot winds. That's just part of the adventure.

Knowing these things, I have continued to sail and crew on boats. I give my adult consent to be on board, knowing that I could be risking my life. An infant and a toddler cannot give such consent. They can't stand watch. They can't evacuate. Had their parents been washed overboard by a rogue wave they would have died excruciating deaths. This in no way compares to getting into a car and getting into a car accident. They not only put their own lives in jeopardy, but the lives of those who had to rescue them. We have been looking for a jetliner in the Indian ocean for a month, the ocean is a big and unforgiving place, to bring infants and toddlers on board, with a satellite phone as your back up safety plan is unconscionable. They should pay for part of the rescue and the appropriate authorities should investigate whether they are mature enough to be parents. Saying on your blog "If you can't say anything nice..." doesn't cut it.

This whole story reminds me of that little girl who wanted to fly the plane at 7 years old, Jessica Dubroff. I don't understand parents who just give in their kids whims and try to pretend that the kids were getting something out of it as well. It's this strange need to be "special" or "different" and not like the "ordinary" people out there. These parents have no shame or conscious whatsoever. They are narcissitically driven by some self indulgent irrational idea that being "normal" for any period is unacceptable.

Parents owe their kids stability and safety. That's the bare minimum. And if the mother was wracked with sea sickness, what were the kids going through? Most parents even feel guilty about taking little kids on planes because of the pressure and stress on their ears. I just don't "get" this kind of parenting.

Hi Cherie, all it did for me is confirm the fact these people are nuts!.IMO.:seeya:

I am not so sure. I have read a few books by people circumnavigating and bring their family along with them. It sure wouldn't be my choice to bring a 1 year old with me but if they are used to the seafaring lifestyle and prepared for it then I don't automatically condemn them for the plans.

I do have an issue with some of the hygiene choices (then again i would never try to shave in such conditions either) and obviously this took a real turn for the worst. But there is a whole community of boatkids out there of all ages imo. Rather like flying is safe as houses but when something goes wrong it is drastic and a rescue is needed, so long as they prepared to get help for a sick child and take the responsibility for it then I am not going to attack them for it. Kids get sick on land as well.

I see heavy drawbacks and positives that cancel each other out. I would have waited a couple more years imo but the concept of travelling with young children isn't so bad. It is their home.

With all that said, i still think they are nuts.

I just love Tom Hanks and one of my favorite movies is Forrest Gump, what a character. I find myself quoting Forrest many times.

Stupid is as Stupid does.

Oh and I find myself saying more and more how I feel sorry for lots of kids not being able to pick their parents. It hurts my heart to see kids in life with parents that live like heathens knowing the kids never have a chance at much more. So sad.

It's obviously not their "lifestyle" because anyone who truly lives this lifestyle would never have taken a small child on the boat this way because they know the reality of being at sea. That's what the quote from the guy above shows. This was a fantasy lifestyle. IMO
