Rescue at sea for sick baby

 • #141
I am all for adventure. My girls and I go sailing in fact. They even do the trapeze on the side of the sailboat. :scared:
(I HATE the water with a fiery passion but do it because my kids love it.)

We go snowmobiling, sledding, sailing, boating, camping, hiking, horseback riding... we don't just sit in our house all day.
However, we are OVER prepared for emergencies and can basically handle them ourselves.
We take more precautions than these fools when we go sailing on the LAKE or go snowmobiling 2 hours from home.

Last night my girls and I made a Cherry Pie. The 4 adults each had a piece and so did each child.
I looked at the rest of the pie last night... and saved it for my girls this morning. :twocents:

The Boy Scouts motto, "Always be prepared".

Lieutenant Colonel Nando Polo of the Air National Guard said the father approached him after the family arrived in port and "basically apologized for putting us through all this." "I told him he did fine, and he doesn't owe anyone an apology," Polo said. "Even when things went wrong for him, he made all the right decisions. He saved his family."

Um, that's like setting your house on fire, then calling the fire department a half hour later, imo. He got lucky the rescue teams got there in time, imo.

Navy sailors say conditions during the rescue were so bad that even the para-jumpers who dropped into the sea to help grew seasick as 5- to 8-foot waves crashed into the boat. The family's broken sailboat had enough fuel for about 11 hours of sailing, but it kept taking on water because of the crashing waves.

While I don't know anything about sailing, going on this long crossing with fuel for 11 hours of sailing sounds mighty scary! I know they were depending on the wind to move them along, so I do not how much fuel they needed. Since it is mentioned, 11 hours must not be very much. So, another crazy mistake?

Also, the boat was taking on water from the waves, so whether the baby was sick or the steering malfunctioned, they were in deep deep trouble and had to call for help! With all the media saying "rescue at sea, baby sick" it sounds much different than saying 'boat malfunctions, rescue at sea'.

Just another factor added to their selfish idealistic dream! (I still see him as the controlling leader and C as the follower.) Reading her blogs and twitter, she does not seem eager to make this trip. The cake issue with #1 daughter blows my mind! I could not eat one piece, let alone two pieces without sharing! As a typical mother, a sliver of cake for me so my child could have a share would be my thinking.

These are my opinions only.

That boat came with an 80 gallon tank when new. They left with only 30 gallons. He also left with a major part leaking, and a sail that they knew would not last more than a day.

Grrrr. . . Looking at this picture, do you think he has his head down as embarrassed, defeated, or just his mannerism?

Personally, I think he needs to grow up and be a man, husband, and father! From reading his blog, he is all about him! The ME generation!

We have heard from her family, why is his family not speaking out?

This is my opinion.

How in the he77 could anyone do this?! This is enough for child endangerment charges in my view! (I missed this on blog, will go see what else I missed. My BP is starting to boil!). :banghead:

Would you be able to link those particular blog posts? I've read a lot, but I hadn't run across that. I'd like to see what he says about it. Thanks!

This entire thing ticks me off. The blog entries, the sloppy planning, wifey complaining, never mind endangering the children...and the cake...that selfish &*&^%% (choose a word) baked a cake for her husband and herself. And omg look at our Navy at their feet. ugh

FYI Last weekend we celebrated spring with our annual warm weather lets celebrate cookout. My dh and I had 17 guest, 4 were children. We made smores around the firepit...the KIDS assisted by adults. made theirs FIRST. We later made strawberry sundaes...YEP THE KIDS WENT FIRST.
IMO that little ditty about sailor man and wife saving cake for themselves speaks volumes.ugh

When I read that it made me want to B slap her or ram that cake in her face. I can not imagine hiding food from my child, let alone cake. What a selfish, selfish person she is. If I thought for one minute that my spouse was hiding food/snacks from our kid's I would be done with him. I don't know what makes a person want to do that and then even repeat it like it's funny. But what it does tell me is that she and probably him would save themselves first. Just that one little thing tells me that.

... sailors who spoke to reporters:

poor visibility, winds of 10 knots and rough seas kept them from sending a rescue boat to the Kaufmans for hours on Sunday. When they did reach the family's sailboat, 5- to 8-foot waves forced them to offload one person at a time. The effort took two hours.

Once the rescue boat started speeding toward the USS Vandegrift, Lyra's sister, Cora, began to laugh in amazement. "The 3-year-old was having a ball. She thought it was the most fun thing ever and the rest of us were white-knuckled."

The parajumpers brought oxygen and powerful antibiotics onto the sailboat, and Lyra responded well to medication for salmonella-like symptoms.

Sometimes Parents Should Put Dreams on Hold for Their Kids' Sake

According to Charlotte’s blog posts, her youngest daughter, Lyra, was having trouble walking on the ship because of the movement from the waves. Lyra also had a difficult time sleeping at night because the motion of the boat would cause her little body to roll back and forth. Sleep is crucial to a child’s development.

Cloth diapers had to be washed in the galley sink and, as someone who used cloth diapers for several months knows, dirty diapers have to be carefully handled to avoid contaminating other surfaces. A sink where food is prepared would not be ideal for washing out dirty diapers.

After their four day trip last November, Eric said that he didn't know if he'd ever get used to really long passages. So with only four days at sea fairly close to land under their belts, they took off in March across the ocean! Eric, you needed to scrap your timetable and wait until you were ready, until your wife and kids were ready (able to help sail that boat). Just because you had lived on the boat for seven years, and made some short trips didn't mean you and Charlotte were qualified to sail around the world. What were they (not) thinking?!!!!

"A message from the Rebel Heart" blog post. They thank their rescuers and supporters and ask that those who are critical await further details, saying that there have been inaccuracies reported about Lyra's condition and the boat. OK, that's possible. But most of us are analyzing their own words in their blogs, not just MSM. In any case, I'm glad they're safe.
