az really need to adopt the way it works over here. you get a letter saying you have been chosen for jury duty and to turn up at the sheriff or high court on a certain day at such and such a time. there are about another 30 people who turn up at the same time, they put numbers into a lotto and x amount of people are chosen and there is your jury.

if you have been chosen and have a problem like you know the person etc you tell the judge and you are excused.

I really wish we had more than tweets to go by. I have a hard time believing that the judge is dismissing potential jurors just because they have prejudged JA's guilt. ...

ITA! And based on this tweet, I don't think JSS is asking about JA's guilt or innocence:

The big question..can you serve after what you have heard in media? #jodiarias #2down"

Seriously, it is asking a lot of citizens to give up what will likely be MONTHS of their time. This is a civic duty and I am usually against anyone trying to get out of it without good reason but the guilt phase dragged on and on and on, and there is every indication that this phase will, too.
No clue why a PENALTY PHASE should last that long

But she is guilty!!!!! this makes no sense to me.

OMG I hope they don't get someone on the jury who thinks she's not guilty!!! AAGGGGHHHHH.

  • #926
Do the jury summons in AZ tell the receiver that it is the Penalty Phase they are summon to?

  • #927
i guess they are finished for the day jen has gone quiet?
i hope juan weeds out all the ones who assume she isn't guilty.

i think JSS should have stated to every set of potential jurors that the defendant has already been found guilty of premeditated murder and that murder was especially cruel so they are only there to decide whether she gets the DP or not. followed by something along the lines of 'do you feel comfortable giving some one the DP'

I really wish we had more than tweets to go by. I have a hard time believing that the judge is dismissing potential jurors just because they have prejudged JA's guilt. The jurors, when they are selected, will be instructed that JA's guilt is no longer at issue. I assumed that they were only tossing people who had prejudged death vs. life, but from the tweets it sounds like people are being dismissed just for believing something they will be instructed to accept as true anyway.

They should be asking whether anyone believes there is doubt as to her guilt or cruelty of the murder, or if anyone believes the first jury made a mistake, and then asking if those people are able to set aside those feelings and accept the instructions of the court.

Hopefully JM will ask those questions down the road, but in the meantime he's losing potential jurors if these tweets are accurate!

Hi, see the link a poster posted below of Jeff Gold on video. He was in the courtroom and he says that yes, they are being dismissed because they can't be "fair" on the guilty/not-guilty part. At least, if I understood him right. Very strange.

In a move to really connect with potential jurors, Arias is making eye contact with them 2 at a time. #jodiarias #justicefortravis #HLNnow

ive tweeted jen and asked if JSS made it clear that they aren't there to decide whether she is guilty as that has already been decided.
hopefully get a reply

@CBS5AZ: Just spoke to a potential juror who said that his mind has been made up about Jodi Arias. He said she should get death penalty. #jodiarias

Lol I doubt he will be sitting in that jury box. By tomorrow he won't be a "potential juror" anymore.

I predict it will take until Christmas just to seat this jury. What happened to the first jury after the trial was unreal. I so don't want to get sucked back into this. Yet, I'm BACK!

What do you mean "what happened to the first jury after the trial?"

@michaelbkiefer: Schedule: hearing at 10 a.m. Wednesday; 100 more jurors come in at 10:30 that day. Judge Stephens canceled the 100 for Wed. afternoon.

BBM: And here we go again ...............

:gaah: It's the FIRST DAY and JSS is cancelling a session !

@TrialDiariesJ we are all a bit confused. surely would be sensible 2ask that before dismissing more than half of the people today.

makes no sense if it says that on questionnaire after shes dismissed people :sigh:

No, but that should have been made clear in the introductory statement by the judge.

I'm so confused. Why would JM not object to this procedure?

IMO, it doesn't matter what a potential juror thinks of her guilt/not because a jury who 100% agreed Jodi was guilty also could not agree on the sentence. So, all they have to do is sentence her.

I still find this process fascinating, but believe she will never be given the DP by a new jury.

A person could be in the courtroom and still get it wrong, IMO. I just cannot believe anyone would be asked about guilt or innocence in this selection process. That is a question for the guilt phase. It is irrelevant here and my guess is Gold got it wrong. Possibly someone said they do not believe her guilty and was dismissed, but I doubt many potential jurors think the first jury got it wrong. IMO again.

Just getting these little snippets of info isn't the full story.

Don't assume anything like the judge isn't instructing the jurors what this case is about...

140 character tweets are not going to provide the full scope of all that is occurring inside the courtroom.

We have 3 jurors that need to speak to court in private #jodiarias

Probably, "Judge I think I'm allergic to Jodi Arias. Just looking at her is giving me itches and hives, so sorry, but you will have to dismiss me."

Maybe he did object in a sealed hearing or something. I've always been pro-JSS or atleast neutral but she's losing me here! She's getting rid of all the good candidates.
