The first thing you learn in studying linguistics is that every person has their own language. No two people speak the same exact language, including interpretations and meaning.

For a woman for whom English is a second language, interpreting what the Hughes, Travis, and Jodi say in e-mails is like taking pot shots.

Two people say that they need to go to the store.

Person #1 is out of toilet paper.
Person #2 is addicted to shopping and needs a fix.

While a simplistic example, it shows that without delving into each person's meaning of words and their background, you can't analyze the meaning of what they say.
