Fransiskus Bambang Soelistyo, said he assumed the flight recorders were still in the tail and that reports they had separated had yet to be confirmed.

"The divers are tying the tail with straps and then we will try (to lift it) two ways - floating balloons combined with cranes, so that the tail sector wouldn't be damaged," he told reporters. "Because we assume the black box is in the tail sector."

He said two bodies had been found still attached to their seats, with local television reporting that one of the recovered seats was from the cockpit.

So we assume the black box is in the tail but we know it isn't in the tail?
Clear as the mud they are sifting through right? :dunno:

I'm wondering if they are belatedly reporting on the few pings they heard yesterday when they first went down to take pics of the tail ... the pings that then stopped. Maybe someone in the field said "yes, yes, we heard pings" but they were talking about yesterday and in the language confusion Reuters is reporting yesterday's news.

I can't find any local Asian news that is reporting pings heard today. In fact, they are denying it.

From yesterday ...

Weak signals coming from the tail were detected, but vanished when divers got closer, he said.

It is this guy that said it ... but he didn't say they were heard today (or what day they were heard).

Signals from the black boxes of an AirAsia jetliner, which crashed in the Java Sea off Indonesia's Central Kalimantan coast, have been detected, Military Commander General Moeldoko said on Friday.

By his next comment, I think he could be talking about yesterday ... :dunno:

"The location was estimated 300 meters from the initial point," Moeldoko was quoted as saying by the detik.com news website, referring to a location where the tail of Airbus A320-200 was found on Wednesday.

(Must be confusing as heck for those of you not in our time zone - which day we are talking about, what, when ... )

From translating this article from their news channel today, Friday arvo, it seems there is a little tension between this guy ^^^ and Bambang. Moeldoko is higher ranked than Bambang, what is he doing there as this is Bambang's show?

Bambang says he IS doing everything he can, he is not resting, 'no no there is no trouble between me and Moeldoko'.
Moeldoko says 'no no I just came down to give spirit to the ops'.

I don't think the media are buying it.

There is a bit in there about the international help. Not sure if they are saying that the international help is great, or why aren't we utilising the international help more.

"I do not do not get ya. The international help to make it faster. If any international assistance must be received, especially in the country , " said Chairman of the Subcommittee on Air NTSC , Masruri , related to the presence of TNI Commander and Chief Basarnas in SAR operations , including in the search for the black boxes , Friday ( 09/01/2015 ).

Ahhh ... finally more about the pings ... detected by a ship, not far from the tail. Divers have gone down to look. Not the same pings as the divers heard yesterday then.

The Indonesian article I translated above said they were trying to get ships out of the area to hear more clearly ... "coordinate" they said.

'A ship detected the pings. The divers are trying to reach it,' said senior search official SB Supriyadi, who is stationed at the search headquarters of Pangkalan Bun., said on Friday

'The location of the ping is reported to be near where the tail was found,' he added.

I'll translate that for you: They've circled the approximate area the tail is in 50 times in their dinghies.

So sad ... sounds as though there is only one surviving family member of Nico's family. :rose:

The Straits Times understands that Nico was travelling with his parents and a brother. His sister, who was not with them, is believed to be waiting for her family at Changi Airport's Terminal 2.

That is heartbreaking...how alone she must feel.

Did you read about the one family who had to split up because there weren't enough seats left on an earlier flight? Mom and son left on one flight and Dad and 2-year-old daughter Zoe stayed behind and left on 8501. So sad.

Current time is 4:30 p.m. ......Jakarta they only have a couple of hours left of daylight at this time.....let's hope that they can get the early risers out there to do the diving -- grrrr

Those '''strong'''' currents aren't likely to diminish any time soon. Wonder if leaving their job half finished might jeopardize their progress. Wouldn't it be discouraging if their work is ''undone'' overnight KWIM?

How tragic the same thing happened with AF447. I hope and pray the families of the victims are coping as best they can. It really puts your own problems into perspective.

I mean his has to have been a problem for a while and they are just now like "oh crap. Maybe we should do something". I know we are a reactive society rather than proactive but Come on.

Is a cockpit type seat ever found elsewhere in a plane or does the finding of one mean that the nose of the plane was also broken apart from the fuselage?

So far it seems like all of the ships are picking up bodies and debris that are floating on top of the water. Do they still have the underwater detectors or sonar searching for the fuselage where most of the passengers is supposed to be strapped into their seats? It should be a very big piece and easier to find.

The cockpit seats will only be located in the cockpit. You are belted in by way of a harness. Before a prepared evacuation F/D crew lock their harness. These seats are able to push back and up. The crew take off seats will have a harness, however they are not adjustable, nor do they lock.

Hmm .. General Moeldoko is getting very involved. Will this help things to move more quickly and effectively? Are there more than just local faces at the meeting? Anyone recognise any uniforms there?
