RI RI - Linda Carman, 54, Point Judith, 18 Sept 2016 *SON ARRESTED, dies before trial*

I wonder how it is possible to kill his mother and grandfather: I cannot even imagine that. I know that sometimes intra-family problems exist, but to go as far as murder . I am flabbergasted. (traduction reverso, English is not my native langage.)

And Nathan strikes me as a singular being- that is devoid of relationships except as they serve his needs and wants. I suspect his mother and grandfather had outlived their usefulness to him ALIVE and so he relegated them to death where they could continue (by means of inheritance) to meet his needs.

Martin Manilla, Nathan Carman's attorney, tells me he is in shock over this news. He found out Carman died through court filings. He says he is currently trying to figure out what happened

Nathan Carman was being held at the Cheshire County House of Corrections in Keene. Supt. Doug Iosue confirms Carman was found dead in his cell this a.m. He was the sole occupant. Manner/cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

UPDATED ON: JUNE 15, 2023 / 11:41 AM / CBS/AP
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Nathan Carman, who was set to go on trial this fall after being charged with killing his mother at sea during a 2016 fishing trip off the coast of Rhode Island, died in jail, prosecutors said Thursday.

Charges against Carman have been dismissed, prosecutors said, after U.S. Marshals reported that he died "on or about" Thursday. The cause of death is not known yet.

Wild! I would have loved to see him convicted though, but I suppose it was a tough case. Can’t wait to find out what the heck happened.

Wowza! Didn't see this coming!

Federal authorities say the man charged with killing his mother at sea during a 2016 fishing trip off the coast of New England has died.

The Vermont man charged with killing his mother off the coast of New England in a scheme to inherit millions of dollars has died awaiting trial, federal authorities said Thursday.

Nathan Carman, 29, pleaded not guilty last year to fraud and first-degree murder in the death of his mother, Linda Carman, and was scheduled to go on trial in October.

An eight-count indictment also says Carman shot and killed his wealthy grandfather John Chakalos as he slept in 2013, in order to obtain money and property from his grandfather’s estate. But the indictment does not charge Carman with his grandfather’s killing, and he had consistently denied any involvement in the two deaths.

The cause of Carman’s death was not immediately clear.

From that article, I noticed this: "In a media availability on Thursday afternoon, Carman's attorneys said that he left a note for them that they have not yet had a chance to read."

Also this: "Carman’s attorneys said they spoke with him as recently as Wednesday evening and he did not seem distressed or acting out of character."

To me, it sounds like he committed suicide.

With this extraordinary story...
I so hope the note he left will provide some closure.

He "left a note that they have not had a chance to read". Yeah, right

Ok, that settles it then. Almost certainly suicide. Thanks

Honestly, it might have been kept from him if it's true that he didn't even hear from this until court releases, like he claims.

Appears to be true - he learned through the court filing.

This is also interesting. NC was a defendant in Federal Court so he was not being held in the County Jail but at Cheshire County Dept. of Corrections which appears to appeal to the Feds (i.e., 42 U.S.C. Chapter 21- Civil Rights). And if suicide, they will hate this occurred under their watch. Otherwise, he definitely had a better than most defendants awaiting trial!

ETA: Pulled NC's docket and only thing I see of note is his 5th lawyer's motion to withdraw was granted on 5/30/23 after he learned he was being appointed as a Judge. His firm was a contractor the the FPD's office but the firm is being dissolved so NC was sent back to the FPD office for a staff attorney. IMO, the change for new counsel at this date most likely would delay the Oct trial date.
