NBC 10's Kelley McGee reported that Victor Cortez's arraignment on a murder charge was postponed Monday so a public defender could be appointed. The arraignment was rescheduled for next week.

Cortez is serving time at the Adult Correctional Institutions for first-degree armed robbery. Police said that before his arrest for that crime, he killed 25-year-old Yodit Kaleab. Investigators said they linked Cortez to Kaleab's killing through bodily fluids and physical evidence...

Kaleab's body was found in a minivan parked between the Providence train station and the State House in October. She had been reported missing about a week earlier.

Midway through jury selection for his impending trial, Victor Cortes... pled guilty this afternoon before Associate Justice Edward C. Clifton in Providence County Superior Court to one count of 2nd-degree murder for the September 30, 2005, murder of Yodit Kaleab. Judge Clifton sentenced Cortes to 60 years, with 40 years to serve at the ACI and 20 years suspended with probation.
