''Case of man murdered 18 years ago remains unsolvedBy Ron Fanfair, Toronto Police Service Published: 6 a.m. February 16, 2018The family of a murdered Toronto man is still seeking justice, 18 years later. On Monday, January 31, 2000, at around 11.51 p.m., officers on patrol in the area of 10 Yorkwoods Gate observed a motor vehicle on the grass boulevard and sidewalk. It was on the south side of the street with the motor running. The vehicle was stopped against a chain link fence and a man was slumped over in the driver’s seat. He was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. It was later determined he died of a gunshot wound to the chest.Richard McEachern was 38 at the time of his death and a resident of the area in which he was killed. He was employed in the car detailing industry.“At the time, he was driving a distinct vehicle, a 1977 Pontiac Parisienne, black with a yellow dealer’s licence plate on the back and a homemade licence plate on the front that said, ‘Black Beauty’,” said D/Sgt. Stacy Gallant. “That evening, he had left work about an hour before his death and, at about 11.30 p.m., he contacted his wife on a cell phone and said he had almost arrived where he was going.”Gallant said the deceased was also seen on a security camera at a Mac’s Milk convenience store at the corner of Yorkwoods Gate and Jane St.“At this same time, he was purchasing what appeared to be cigarettes,” said Gallant. “A witness came forward who was walking in the area at the time of the shooting and said they heard a single gunshot and observed three men running south across Yorkwoods Gate, from the parking lot, where the deceased’s vehicle was parked.”The men were described as black, early 20s, wearing dark baggy clothing.Gallant said investigators would like to speak to them as they may be witnesses to the fatal shooting.“Since the night of the murder, none of these individuals has been identified or has come forward to provide information,” he said. “

'GANGLAND COLD CASES: Toronto's unsolved Mafia rubouts'

'What they are is unsolved mob murders and southern Ontario has had no shortage of them with some stretching back to the 1960’s. Casualties in a never-ending war for criminal empire.'

“Things have changed,” Toronto Police cold case chief Stephen Smith told The Toronto Sun. “In traditional organized crime murders, the people in conflict aren’t the ones doing the killing and that makes them more difficult to solve.”

Over the past two decades, the Mafia has outsourced its killing to street gangs who will murder for cash, guns, drugs or glory adding “another layer” to police investigations, Smith said.''
“It’s too much for them to put themselves at risk … it’s easier tor them to pay for a sloppy job that can be corrected than to do it themselves,” Smith said, adding that for the aspiring hitmen, it can be a one-way ticket.''

  • ''The life of the party.
That’s how Shirley Davidson remembers her little brother Richard “AJ” McEachern.

“He was just carefree. If there was a room and he was in it, you knew he was there,” Davidson said. “At his niece’s wedding, probably the last time most people saw him physically, he was the only guy dancing with all the older women. That was the type of fellow he was.”

  • 'Richard Alan Joseph McEachern was born at Toronto Western Hospital on Sept. 22, 1961. The youngest of five children, McEachern grew up in downtown Toronto.
''Davidson also has theories: her brother always had a lot of money on him, she said, and he may have flashed his cash while in the convenience store. Maybe someone demanded his vehicle.

“Knowing him, there was no way you’re going to get his car,” Davidson said.''
