Venerable Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, best known as the dragon-loving half-giant Hagrid from the Harry Potter film franchise, died on Friday, his managers said.

He was 72.

A representative with the actor's agency, William Morris Endeavor, confirmed his passing to NBC News, saying Coltrane had been ill and wasn't active recently.

His cause of death wasn't immediately disclosed...

Very sad to hear this.

He was superb in Cracker and was enjoyable to watch in James Bond films too.

RIP Robbie.

Oh my. So sad to hear this earlier on the news. Long before he became the international celebrated quantity he was, courtesy of Harry Potter, he was a powerhouse of raw and beautiful energy in 'domestic' drama in the UK.

RIP and this - those who've known him from the off will understand - to send him on his joy-giving way -

Oh Hagrid is gone.

*tears*

Coltrane has been a favorite actor of mine for decades. What a career. He was in Mona Lisa. And two Bond films, and in Blackadder, and of course Cracker, and so much more.

I loved that his part in Hagrid got his wonderful character acting out into the wider public viewing.

Might have to watch some Harry Potter this weekend.
