Grammy award-winning singer Roberta Flack, who crooned hits like “Killing Me Softly with His Song” and “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” has died, a representative confirmed to NBC News.

She was 88.

In November 2022, a representative announced that Flack had ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and could no longer sing.

The progressive disease “has made it impossible to sing and not easy to speak,” Flack’s manager Suzanne Koga said in a news release...

Thank you for sharing this sad news @BetteDavisEyes ….. the first I heard of the beautiful singing and work of Roberta Flack was in the movie “Play Misty for Me”, starring Clint Eastwood, Jessica Walters, and others. Her song “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” was used in that movie. As a young lad in intermediate school four of us went to see it in Newport News, Virginia. IIRC it was rated R, so the two young couples (ourselves) were quite pleased to have been allowed in to see it.

I will never forget the stark contrast from the beauty of that song and some of the horror of the story itself IMO. RIP Ms. Flack. MOO

New York — Roberta Flack, the Grammy-winning singer and pianist whose intimate vocal and musical style on “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and other hits made her one of the top recordings artists of the 1970s and an influential performer long after, died Monday. She was 88.

She died at home surrounded by her family, publicist Elaine Schock said in a statement. Flack announced in 2022 she had ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease, and could no longer sing,..
