Roger Whittaker, one of the UK's most celebrated folk music singers and best-known as an expert whistler, has died aged 87.

A family statement, reported by German media outlet Bild, confirmed he died on September 13 in a hospital in southern France.

Folk singer Roger Whittaker, famous for his 1969 hit song Durham Town and expert whistling, has died at the age of 87.

His other hits included The Last Farewell and New World in the Morning, and he sold nearly 50 million records around the world, his website said.

I'm so sad.

But happy he's not suffering anymore. Seems he had a lot of health problems.

I still get the chills hearing The Last Farewell.

RIP Roger and condolences to his wife and family.

Thank you for the music Mr Whittaker.
