A 43-year-old Rome man has been arrested in connection with a murder that occurred 15 years ago.

According to a warrant from the Magistrate Court of Bartow County, Shannon Vashawn Tapley is accused of strangling, stabbing, and cutting the throat of 19-year-old Lance Jay Banister on Pine Log Road near U.S. 411 in the Rydal area in 2008.

This is wild - according to the Bartow County Police Report the man walked into the jail and confessed. It doesn't even appear that anyone was investigating this murder despite the victim being found stabbed, strangled and with his throat cut.

Suspect is a preacher according to his Facebook page. I cannot get over this.

How dreadful the horrendous death of Lance was never investigated after his body was found all those years ago.
I can't grasp why it was never investigated.

His family, friends and all who knew him must have been through hell with the not knowing who did it.

Shannon's conscience ate away at him eventually to confess as he has done now.

I could only find one article about it, from 2008 - Murray sheriff's office still seeking public's help with apparent murder

Disgraceful isn't it. ''Seeking public's help''!!. What on earth were the police doing since Lance's body was found.

All I too have found is the one article 2008. But when I clicked the link I got this message ''Unavailable due to legal reasons' - Due to 'GDPR' - General Data Protection Regulation.

I also saw a mention of Lance's 'Graveside Service' April 10th 2008 was attended by his mother/father/sister/brother and maternal grandmother.

Surely either of them must have tried hard to get Lance's murder looked into over the years.

It really looks like he was just forgotten. He didn't even have a very thorough obituary. So very sad.

Earlier reports in the Rome News-Tribune show:
♦ Banister was reported missing March 18 by his mother, Beverly Banister. According to a police report, Banister was last seen waiting for someone named “Daniel” to take him to Cartersville.

♦ His body was found by a fisherman close to the Talking Rock Bridge, Ga. 136 and the Gordon County line about 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 28, 2008, officials said.

WBHF Radio, citing a warrant from Bartow County Magistrate Court, reports Tapley is accused of strangling Banister and then stabbing him repeatedly at a site near a church near Rydal. The radio station also reports Tapley surrendered to authorities.
