Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday that it warned Western countries against using the Wagner mercenary group’s mutiny “to achieve their Russophobic goals”, Reuters reports.

The ministry’s social media channels still remain active. On Twitter, it recently shared a post by Belarus’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs which stated its support of Russia and called the war in Ukraine a “battle for the future of the Slavic world”.

“We cannot remain aloof from the events happening in the south of Russia”, the post said.

The Russian foreign ministry also shared a video from the Russian embassy of Ambassador Andrei Kelin discussing frozen assets in the UK.

Here is a summary of the events so far:

  • According to Ukrainian news agencies, Kyiv has liberated territories near the city of Krasnohorivka in Donetsk region, which have been occupied by pro-Russia separatists since 2014, during the Wagner mutiny in Russia.
  • The governor of Russia’s Lipetsk province says the Wagner mercenary group has entered the region, AP reports. The Lipetsk region is about 360km (225 miles) south of Moscow and much closer to the capital than Rostov-on-Don, where Wagner forces appeared during the night.
  • There have been numerous reports that Vladimir Putin’s presidential plane took off from Moscow’s Vnukovo airport at 2.16pm local time (1216 BST) and then headed north-west. It has not been possible to confirm whether Putin was on the plane and his spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, has told the Tass news agency the president is “working in the Kremlin”.
  • Large amounts of cash were found during a raid on Prigozhin’s office, he has reportedly confirmed. Russian media had reported that money was found at the St Petersburg address, something Prigozhin has now confirmed, according to Reuters.
  • The UK government will hold an emergency Cobra meeting to discuss the situation in Russia, Reuters reports.

Wagner Group is on the road to Moscow at this very minute. One way or another, there will be an event there.

Pro-Ukraine Russian units supported Prigozhin's coup in Russia - Euromaidan Press
Two pro-Ukrainian units formed of Russian citizens, the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK) and the Russia Freedom Legion (LSR), supported the Wagner Group’s coup against the Russian authorities, and called on their supporters to take action.

The Russia Freedom legion wrote on Telegram, “Prigozhin is our enemy on the battlefield, but now he is telling the truth: about how cowardly generals send hundreds of thousands of Russians to their deaths as cannon fodder.”

“Soldiers, officers: your time has come. Turn your weapons against the towers of the Kremlin, do not let the internecine strife drown Russia in blood. It is time to stop the senseless and brutal killing of Ukrainians and the deaths of thousands of Russians at the front and return home: to where you are needed now,” the LRS said.

In turn, RDK commander Denis Nikitin said he is “sincerely rooting for the success of Prigozhin’s mission,” because the “bloody Kremlin regime can only be brought down in one way – by an armed uprising. This is the uprising that Prigozhin has started.”

“I urge all supporters of the RDC to take active action! We all have a unique chance to determine our own destiny and the destiny of our country,” he said in his video address.

  • ''Mutinous Russian mercenary fighters have advanced towards Moscow after seizing a southern city overnight, with Russia’s military firing on them from the air but seemingly incapable of slowing their lightning advance.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin says an “armed mutiny” by the Wagner Group is treason, adding that “decisive action” will be taken against them.''
  • ''The authorities in Moscow and the surrounding area say they have declared a “counterterrorism” state of emergency after Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin claimed his forces were in control of military sites in Rostov.
  • Earlier, Prigozhin accused Russia’s top military leadership of ordering a rocket attack on Wagner’s field camps in Ukraine, where “huge numbers” of his fighters had been killed.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says “Russia’s weakness is obvious” and that the longer Moscow keeps its troops and mercenaries in Ukraine, the more chaos it would invite back home.''
''Moscow’s mayor warned Saturday that traffic could be restricted in parts of Russia’s capital as part of heightened security prompted by the rebellion of mercenaries with private military company Wagner.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin asked the city’s residents to refrain from using their cars amid the counter-terrorism operation in Moscow and the surrounding region that authorities introduced earlier Saturday. He also declared Monday a non-working day for most people, with the exception of public servants and employees of some industrial enterprises.

Sobyanin noted that all key city services were put on high readiness and advised residents to report any emergencies.''

So the Wagner leader, whose name I cannot pronounce or spell, has 25,000 men and is reasonably well equipped.
The Russian military has millions of men, is supposedly well equipped, and has air assets also. Why are they digging trenches and setting up machine guns…basically preparing to fight the Wagners on the Wagners terms…when their Air Force alone should be able to decimate them?
My question is, why has the Russian military not crushed this insurrection already, especially now that they are an appreciable distance into Russia? Why is mighty Moscow cowering?
My thoughts are the Wagners have a lot of sympathy and support within the Russian military who are standing down.
Putin is fleeing Moscow because he knows he can’t count on his own forces to protect him.

Analysis: Putin has only himself to blame as infighting engulfs Kremlin insiders

Analysis from CNN's Nathan Hodge

In the years leading up to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a St. Petersburg-based businessman named Yevgeny Prigozhin emerged as a canny political entrepreneur.

Prigozhin and his companies served the interests of the Russian state, advancing Putin’s foreign policy in ways that were both useful and off the books.

Prigozhin’s relatively discreet public profile was his greatest asset. He bankrolled the notorious troll farm that the US government sanctioned for interference in the 2016 US presidential election; created a substantial mercenary force that played a key role in conflicts from Ukraine’s Donbas region to the Syrian civil war; and helped Moscow make a play for influence on the African continent.

All of Prigozhin’s activities gave the Kremlin a fig leaf of deniability. After all, mercenary activity was technically barred by Russian law, and Putin could always maintain that interference in US elections was merely the work of “patriotic” hackers.
