Russia-Ukraine war live: Moscow should expect more attacks, Kyiv says (theguardian.com)
07.09 EDT

Kyiv: Moscow should expect more attacks

A spokesperson for Ukrainian military intelligence told Kyiv Post that people living in Moscow should expect more attacks, especially as Russia’s air defences appeared incapable of protecting their citizens.

“Given the dynamics of recent months, the number, geography and intensity, it would be logical to assume an increase in daily attacks,” Andriy Yusov, spokesperson for Ukrainian military intelligence, said.

Yusov’s comments come after a dramatic increase in Ukrainian attacks in recent weeks, with a drone forcing the closure of Vnukovo airport and Russian forces downing a Ukrainian drone over Moscow this morning.

Yusov noted that “the concept of security is increasingly distant from the residents of Moscow”, and hoped that this increase in attacks would open residents’ eyes and break through Russian propaganda.

“The whole world continues to see that the Russian defense system and the country – which claims a leading role in the arms market – is ineffective, outdated, and cannot adequately respond to modern challenges,” he said.

Doctors in the Russian-occupied village of Lazurne in the Kherson region will not give medicines to residents who have not received Russian passports, Gauleiter of the local administration Aleksandr Dudka said. "First of all it concerns people who need insulin, they have already felt on themselves how to be a citizen of another country," - he said. People "who have not yet issued passports of the country they live in" will not receive humanitarian aid either. Dudka also criticized families whose children do not attend a Russian school: "These parents will be brought to administrative responsibility, and then to criminal responsibility. And then we will put them on buses, take them to the border line and send them to Ukrainian schools." The residents of the settlement should "respect the country that ensures its security," Dudka said.

Russia-Ukraine war: two drones shot down near Crimean bridge – as it happened | Ukraine | The Guardian

A summary of today's developments

  • Explosions were reported in Kerch near the Crimean Bridge that connects Russian-occupied Crimea with Russia. The Russian-appointed head of Crimea said Russian air defence was able to shoot down two missiles in the first attack, and then another one, and that there was no damage. Footage and photos show smoke billowing up from the bridge, which Russian officials said was a smokescreen for workers. This comes after an explosion in October shut down both the road bridge and rail bridge for months.
  • The Russian foreign ministry decried Ukraine’s attacks on the Crimean Bridge as “terrorist attacks” on “civilian infrastructure” – even though Russian forces have repeatedly targeted civilian infrastructure since the beginning of the invasion, conducting air strikes on power grids, dams, parks, schools, private homes, churches and hotels.
  • The attacks on the Crimean Bridge took place hours after Russian forces said they downed 20 Ukrainian drones targeting the Crimean peninsula. This comes amid a new campaign of drone strikes targeting Moscow in recent days as Kyiv works to keep the Kremlin’s war in the hearts and minds of the Russian elites and others seeking to ignore the invasion.
  • Two people were injured by Russian forces today in the Kherson oblast, where “the shelling has not stopped since morning”, said the regional governor, Oleksandr Prokudin. A 70-year-old man suffered multiple injuries after a projectile hit a residential building in Poniativka, while a 72-year-old man was seriously injured from explosives dropped from a drone in Odradokamyanka, Prokudin said.
  • A Su-30 fighter jet crashed during a training flight in Russia’s Kaliningrad region, killing the two pilots on board, according to the RIA news agency.
  • Two people have been killed in Russian attacks in the Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv oblasts. A police officer was killed and 12 people were injured in a guided Russian aerial bomb attack on Orikhov, while an elderly woman was killed early on Saturday morning due to shelling by Russian troops on Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi village in Kupiansk district.
  • In the village of Lazurne in the Russian-occupied part of the Kherson oblast, residents will not be able to receive medicines like insulin or humanitarian aid if they do not apply for a Russian passport.
  • Odesa, a Black Sea city famed for its beautiful shoreline, has opened several beaches for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Throughout the past year, suspicious objects and mines were routinely washing up along the coast, creating a hazard for beachgoers.

The Ukrainian army does not intend to engage in conspicuous “large-scale battles” against the Russians as the operation moves forward, Podolyak said on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter.

The goal, he said, is a piecemeal and systematic destruction of “the capabilities of the enemy army: its logistics, technical potential, officers and personnel.”

Also Monday, the Dutch Defense Ministry and the British Royal Air Force said they scrambled fighter jets when Russian bombers were tracked flying toward the airspace of the Netherlands and off Scotland, respectively. The pair of Russian warplanes spotted in each location were flying in international airspace.

Britain’s air force said two Typhoon fighters were launched from RAF Lossiemouth to monitor the Russian bombers as they flew north of the Shetland Islands off Scotland. The Russian Tu-142 Bear-F and Tu-142 Bear-J, which are used for maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare, were in airspace that is part of NATO’s northern air policing area, the U.K. Defense Ministry said.

The barrage came just hours before top Russian military officials and their counterparts from allied countries in Asia, the Middle East and Africa gathered outside Moscow for a security conference.
