Similarly, the US enthusiastically supported Ukraine before and after the invasion, up until the transfer of power a few weeks ago.

If Trump wants to withdraw support, fine.

But he cannot expect Ukraine to pay for what Americans previously decided to spend.

And he should get out of the 'negotiations', since he is no longer relevant to the future of Ukraine or Europe.

Ukraine doesn't have to pay back anything do they? I'm not sure how the US could force them. Maybe I'm missing something. JMO.

It is a strong desire of the current administration. Stated publicly as a sure thing.

"U.S. President Donald Trump said on Feb. 22 that the United States would "get our money back" after Ukraine agrees to a deal giving Washington access to half its revenues from critical natural resources.

"We're going to get our money back because it's just not fair," Trump said at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Feb. 22."

Just because President Trump said that it doesn't mean it will happen. I guess if Zelenskyy agrees it could happen. JMO.

Once you said that Trump must have misspoken when he said that Ukraine caused the war. (He didn't. His comments were intentional and supportive of Putin.)

Then you said that just because Trump said he expects to be repaid, it doesn't mean it will happen.
No, it doesn't mean it will happen but it also doesn't mean that he didn't ask to be repaid.

Not really. The Allies and Russia had common enemies they had to defeat. The US never trusted Russia (Soviet Union) during the war and especially so as the war was ending. The Russian military didn't coordinate with the Allies during that time. They did their own thing. It all evolved into the Cold War, East & West Germany, Berlin Wall, etc.
I'm talking about an established historical fact:
Russia and the US were Allies during the WWII. Period.
How their relationship developed after 1945 is another story.

It appears Washington believes it is an 'offer he can't refuse'. Not because it is a good deal, but in the Godfather sense.

I agree. The US and Russia during World War II were Allies with the common goal of defeating Nazi Germany. It doesn't mean they liked each other or agreed on most things and that manifested itself during the Cold War. JMO.

Why is that?

Not always.

Zelenskyy can certainly reject the mineral deal and ask other nations for help if he wants to continue the war instead of seeking a negotiated peace. JMO.
I see. So Trump is pretending he is capable of negotiating peace with Putin, but will only do it if it is in direct US interest, once he's tricked Ukraine into giving away their assets.

"If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you."

That is a clever salesman's con, not diplomacy.

Whatever it takes to save lives and insure a peaceful future for the Ukrainian people I'm for it.

Like I said, Zelenskyy doesn't have to agree to anything. He can try to keep all of the minerals and hope that Russia doesn't just take it all away. JMO.

It reminds me of a fictional soapie I watch, where the villain would only hand over the life saving serum if the person wanting the serum signed over their company in return.

In this situation a 50-50 deal looks pretty good to me. JMO.

50-50 for who? The US and Russia? How is this fair at all?

Except the 'lifesaving serum' is a bottle of aspirin.
