"The former chief of the defence staff warned it is “inevitable” that Russia will seek to test any defence force placed in Ukraine in the event of a deal to end the war. “If we send troops, they will be tested, and they have to robustly be able to defend themselves,” Lord Richards told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

He said given the size of the border between Russia and Ukraine a force of 100,000 to 200,000 troops would be needed. He added that these troops would need to be rotated, which could significantly increase the number that would be required to maintain the presence."

And I reinterate, its all about the minerals.

Obama screwed up with Crimea. But times were so different 10-12 years ago..
Quite honestly, I believe if Romney had won, Crimea would look quite different.

America and Russia are lying. All expansionist powers lie. They know exactly what will happen if serious security is not provided. And our President, will say "who would have known, my hands are clean". moo.

And I reiterate, review what happened with the Munich Agreement of 1938.
It WILL happen again.

The UK prime minister is prepared to commit British troops to a peacekeeping mission but believes that US promises are vital to "deter Putin from coming again”.

The US will get “a lot of money” back from Ukraine under the deal, Donald Trump said on Wednesday, but signalled a refusal to provide minimal security guarantees to Kyiv in return.

Yes - Thank you @PommyMommy for all those articles! Much appreciated. Glad to see everyone stepping up to help Ukraine!

ditto @PommyMommy .... My guess is that America is going to try to take credit for others stepping up to the plate. ha ha ha...
But it really did "feel good" to see all your updates... In reality , I think these other countries actually CARE about Ukraine and peace... not just some $$$$ deal.
I think the "old America" really did care.
But America is about the money... so hopefully hopefully hopefully, She will make the deal work out for all parties...., ESPECIALLY Ukraine!!
Zelinksky must stay strong to keep true security, not "peacekeeping consulting or mumbo jumbo" MORE than other countries....because that is what America has always been.

obviously moo. Routing for everyone here!!!

Agreed. I posted the UN peacekeeper responsibilities as an example of what would be expected for peacekeeping troops in Ukraine. Ukraine is a member of the United Nations. I wonder if they could seek, peacekeepers from the UN? I'm not as familiar with UN policies and procedures as I am with NATO. I'll try to read up and see if this would be an option for them.
Yes, NATO is an action, members only organization. I think that is why so many NATO Nations will have a difficult time providing peacekeeping services. Ukraine is not a member and not entitled to direct combat involvement. They are only going to put combat boots on the ground for members.

The electoral activity of our state in the UN is intensive. In addition to the UN Security Council and various posts in the General Assembly, Ukraine was elected seven times as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council and three times as a member of the UN Human Rights Council (also nominated for 2021-2023). In 2011, the Permanent Representative of Ukraine served as the Vice-Chair of the UN Peacebuilding Commission during our membership in the PBC in 2011-2012. In 2020, the Permanent Representative of Ukraine elected as the Vice-President of the ECOSOC for the term 2020-2021.

Today Ukraine is a member of such UN bodies as the Economic and Social Council (2019-2021), the Human Rights Council (2018-2020, re-elected for 2021-2023), the Commission on Social Development (2020-2023), the Commission on Population and Development (2021-2024), the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (2016-2021), the Committee on Conferences (2019-2021), the Bureau of the Committee on Information (2019-2021), the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (2020-2023), the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL, 2019-2025), the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS (2019-2021), the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (2019-2020), the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (2011-2020).
Combat boots and Peace Keeping are two different things. Before there even was NATO European countries didn't need a unilateral agreement to help fight the Germans. Granted many of those countries were quickly overtaken and occupied but it didn't stop groups like the Provisional Government of the French Republic from fighting on enemy lines. Australia and New Zealand are not members of NATO but they are still part of the Commonwealth.

Well...I guess the US does deserve some credit. After last weeks message to NATO by Secretary of Defense, and Secretary of State, and VP Vance tour of Europe, now countries are stepping up AND they should.

So far no country has boots on the ground in Ukraine. There have been NO offers of combat troops from any nation.

Moo....

He has options, more today than a week ago. Many countries have stepped up with financial military and humanitarian aid. He has support to continue the war.
He has TWO deals to consider for business venues to mine minerals, neither offering combat troops.

I'm sure he and his ministers will make the best decision for the future if Ukraine.

" 'Historic Agreement'.

Trump Announces Zelensky's Visit.

1740693141964.jpeg

'President Volodymyr Zelensky
will be at the White House on Friday morning.
We will sign a historic agreement'.

Donald Trump said on Thursday.

'The agreement will cover rare earth metals, as well as fossil fuels'.

Trump announced the signing of the agreement at a press conference with British Prime Minister Kier Starmer.

According to the US president,
'the United States will become the main partner
in the extraction of Ukrainian minerals,
rare earth metals, as well as oil and gas'.

'American taxpayers
will get a refund for the aid given to Ukraine:,
Trump added.

The president also stressed
that helping Ukraine defend itself against Russia was
'a very important thing to do'.

Progress in peace talks

Trump also announced that
'progress toward achieving peace will continue when President Zelensky visits the White House'.

'We are working very hard to end this war.
I think we have made a lot of progress,
and I think it is happening quite rapidly',
he emphasized."

"Trump Asked If He Would Apologize to Zelensky:

Significant Reaction.

1740694478883.jpeg

Donald Trump was asked on Thursday
whether he would apologize to Volodymyr Zelensky
for calling him a 'dictator'.

The US president ignored the journalist's question.
He said that he had 'great respect' for the Ukrainian President.

'I think tomorrow morning we will have a very good meeting,
we will get along very well.

We gave him a lot of equipment
and a lot of money,
but they fought very bravely.
Someone has to use this equipment'

the US President concluded his answer,
thus ignoring
the topic of Zelensky's 'apology'."

Trump cares about $$$, he couldn't give a toss how many people die.

We in Europe care about our security and our close neighbours struggle for their lives.

IMO

"Zelenskyy is a dictator" - that's just utter madness and kissing Putin's ring.

I'm starting to believe that Trump is not good in these press conferences. The reporters questions are quite cheeky and potentially trigger him to lash out.

He gets a barrage of questions about things that aren't at his front of mind, and answers off the cuff, or because the question offends him.

So perhaps he's being trained to just ignore questions when he doesn't have a good answer.

Well, I respectfully disagree, America does not get any credit. These are bonded Europeans and Nato members who are coming together in unity against America and Russia. They are THERE. They know their history, Americans do not. They understand the threats of Russia far better than most Americans.

I share your concern of no boots on the ground. I am ignorant of the ramifications. But these poor Ukranians hae fought to the bone, and their losses are just so painful.

Does America know this will hurt Ukraine in the long run--this inability to get boots on the ground? Are there international laws that influence this?
God, i wish I understood more

IMO, Europe respects Ukraine to determine its own future. That is what sovereignty means.

If Ukraine wanted to end the war right now, and communicated that, Europe would assist.

If Ukraine wanted to declare an unconditional ceasefire with Russia, and negotiate a deal with Russia involving peacekeepers, the UN and Europe would assist.

But Ukraine doesn't want to just give up the war. Ukraine military is going to keep fighting to win.

Zelensky is asking for weapons support to continue fighting against the Russian invasion of their country.

If the allies can arrange for talks where Russia is willing to actually, truly negotiate with Ukraine to reach mutually satisfactory peace terms, that would be wonderful.

But Ukraine is not willing to 'make peace' with an enemy invader that will just use a ceasefire to regroup and become stronger for the next attack.

Also, European 'boots on the ground' at this point would mean European countries are declaring war against Russia. Trying to kill Russians is a declaration of war. No one wants to do that.

I think he does a great job at these press conferences and I think it's great that we once again have a President who is not afraid to talk to the press, even those that are not very kind to him. JMO.

There is a website called Hope for Ukraine. They are doing some wonderful things.

Recently they have been supplying families who are living near the front lines with easy-to-use solar power systems, so the families can cook a hot meal and power their vital devices. The power grid near the front lines is very unstable.

They do other things also ... providing food, clothing, shelter, medical support.

They are a non-profit organisation, privately funded by donations.

Hope for Ukraine’s Solar Energy Resilience Program is bringing light and warmth to families affected by ongoing crises.

In February, as energy disruptions became a harsh reality, especially in frontline areas like the Kherson region, this initiative delivered solar-powered solutions to restore daily life. Each kit provides essential electricity, enabling families to prepare hot meals and power vital devices. Consequently, this program is empowering communities, one family at a time.

Australia and New Zealand are not members of NATO but they are still part of the Commonwealth.

They call us de facto NATO members. :)
We have signed partnership agreements with NATO.

Australia is even referred to as a "de facto member of NATO". Australia is referred to by NATO as one of their "partners across the globe", agreeing to work on crisis and conflict management, post-conflict situations, reconstruction and facilitating humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.

NATO and Australia signed a joint political declaration in June 2012 followed by a signature of an Individual Partnership and Cooperation Programme in February of the next year.

In 2001, NATO and New Zealand signalled their commitment to strengthen cooperation with the joint signature of an Individual Partnership and Cooperation Programme in June 2012.

New Zealand has made valuable contributions to NATO-led efforts in Afghanistan, as part of the International Security Assistance Force and Resolute Support missions to train, advise and assist the Afghan security forces and institutions. New Zealand attended the NATO Summit for first time in 2022.
