World leaders begin to react to White House meeting

We've already brought you comments from Zelensky and the White House in response to today's meeting, but other world leaders are now reacting too.

A number of Ukraine's key European allies were quick to confirm their continued support for the country. French President Emmanuel Macronsaid: "Russia is the aggressor, and Ukraine is the aggressed people. I think we were all right to help Ukraine... and to continue to do so."

Meanwhile, in a post on X directed towards Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: "You are never alone dear president... we will continue working with you for a just and lasting peace".

Trump, however was praised by the deputy head of the Russian security council, Dmitry Medvedev, who said Zelensky "finally got a proper slap down in the Oval Office".

Similarly, HungarianPrime Minister Viktor Orban said the US president "stood bravely for peace. Even if it was difficult for many to digest".

I'm very concerned that he already has. These are not the behaviors of a leader acting in the best interests of his nation and constituents. We know Donald has been bankrupt many, many times in his, er "career"... Where did the bailouts come from?
Russia has considered Trump a KGB asset since the 80's. Whether he realises that or not is anyone's guess, he's very easy to manipulate due to his malignant narcissism.

I'm good with that. But I think the Europeans need to take the lead and US contributions should be reduced. JMO.
I totally agree! Europe, and lots of the rest of the world, have for too long relied on US money and power. We should absolutely have been spending more on defence for decades now.

<modsnip>

The performance by DT and his court jester was completely and utterly shameful by any measure of the word.

Look at it from the other side; if the USA hadn't got some lucky breaks throughout history and were in the position Ukraine now is - how would you feel were it Mr Putin talking like that to Mr Trump?

I feel that Trump could sell the United States to Putin for the right price ( sarcasm), but there is a kernel of truth to it
You are I fear not a million miles away from the truth there!

There's a reason the US spends all that money, it's called soft power, and it's to stop Authoritarian regimes (China) and Dictators (Russia/NK/Iran) muscling in on what they see as keeping world order. Trump has ripped it up in 5 minutes like a toddler and proved to all of those allies the US can no longer be trusted.

Go for it. Him and his family/sycophants have had lots of comms with Russia since the 80's. They saw him as a patsy long before a lot of us did.

Public breakdown signals looming crisis in Nato

The relationship between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky was bad enough before the shouting match in the Oval Office. Now it’s in pieces.

The public breakdown also signals a major crisis looming between European members of Nato and the US. Question marks about the US commitment to Europe are now redoubled.

President Trump has put heavy pressure on Ukraine while offering big concessions to Russia.

It appears to be evidence that his priority is mending relations with Russia – and concessions from Ukraine are a price he’s prepared to pay.

If Trump follows the breakdown of talks with a freeze on military aid Ukraine will fight on. The doubts are how effectively, and for how long.

Conversations I’ve had in Kyiv indicate that Ukraine is hoping that its European allies will take up the slack. There are also questions about how much power Russia can deploy, having lost so many men and machines.

NATO is done. Europe needs its own defence force, the US is following a path of Isolationism.

And that is really, really, Biblically bad!

Isolationism never works - see North Korea as a prime example.

Or, perhaps, NATO just needs to kick out the USA?

I read this morning that Zelenskyy immediately called Macron when he left the WH.

Zelenskyy has canceled all his public events around D.C. where he had planned to take questions.

Zelenskyy reportedly had a call with French President Emmanuel Macron following the meeting with Trump. He then reportedly spoke with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. according to Financial Times chief Ukraine correspondent Christopher Miller.

I think whatever happens the EU + UK need their own force equivalent to NATO. With the amount of countries involved however and bad actors like Hungary and Slovakia the logistics are years and years away.

My father worked his whole life as a diplomat in the U.S. Foreign Service. I have never been so outraged, ashamed, and disgusted as I am today. What a despicable, disgusting show of weakness to Putin. There aren't words to express it. We have truly fallen. Moo.

He's right to contact Mark Rutte. I'm not up to date with how the Nuclear umbrella works but obviously us and France have the weapons, Trident subs carry nuclear weapons and there's always at least two out on patrol anywhere in the world at the time but I have a feeling the US has a say or the codes for it.

Honestly, this looks to be playing out like that film The Dead Zone with Christopher Walken and Martin Sheen; Psycho US President who CW's character takes a shot at (Trump has had that) who ends up being the architect of his own downfall.

Unfortunately, Mr Trump might just end up taking Ukraine and a lot of the USA (particularly its international standing) with him.

One sincerely hopes not.

This is awful. I'm a Canadian Ukrainian. I am so glad President Zelensky didn't agree to Trump's terms it was a awful disgusting offer in my opinion. I really hope nato remove trump/USA . There just has to be a better way. I wish I could say what I think but I can't. Jmoo

You're not the only one. My aunt went from the civil service to a diplomat all over the world for the UK over the last 20 years - I'd imagine most countries are having emergency meetings right now.

Everytime Trump opens his mouth I feel like they are drawing further away from their allies and alienating themselves, is that meant to be part of Project 2025? International standing has already took a massive nose dive. Just look at the response from the EU leaders.
