Zelensky rejects the idea of stepping down after White House spat

President Zelensky's interview on Fox News - his first since the fiery spat in the White House earlier today - has just concluded.

  • Zelensky stopped short of an outright apology, saying "I am not sure we did something bad"
  • But he also took the chance to thank Americans and Donald Trump: "I respect the president and I respect American people"
  • The Ukrainian president said the argument captured by the world's media in the Oval Office "was not good" but said he was confident that his relationship with Trump could be salvaged
  • "Because it’s relations more than just two presidents. It’s historical relations, strong relations, between our people," he said
  • Zelensky was also asked whether he would step down. He suggested it woudn't be a good idea. "This decision can only be made by the people of Ukraine," he said.

I just caught a bit in the end. The interviewer asks (again) about 'can Zelenskyy salvage his relationship with Trump.'

He says, essentially: the important relationship is not the one between 2 presidents, congress, etc. The relationship is between the US people and the Ukrainian people.
It's between right and wong.

It's not difficult to figure out on which side you lie when you put five second's thought into it!

Canada stands with Ukraine - Trudeau

Writing on X, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says that "Russia illegally and unjustifiably invaded Ukraine".

He adds: "Canada will continue to stand with Ukraine and Ukrainians in achieving a just and lasting peace." Zelensky has replied to the tweet with: "thank you for your support".

"Where does Ukraine go from here?

Europe can help Ukraine build a well-trained army with top-flight weaponry – one that Russia will find an even tougher opponent than it does now.

Europe, with its world-class defense industries and resources for training troops, can help build Ukraine’s future army so that Russia must reckon with a far more powerful adversary than the one it has fought since 2022. The purpose of that army wouldn’t be to defeat Russia’s but rather to deter it by raising the cost, in blood and treasure, that it would have to pay to prevail.

Both Ukraine and Europe now have a Trump problem. They should turn it into an opportunity for defense cooperation."

And they already decided (unanimously) 3 days ago, that Zelenskyy should remain as leader while the country is at war.

I doubt any TV footage clearly showing Zelenskyy being bullied by Trump and Vance would change that.

As long as the Trump administration doesn't do a deal with Russia...

Little of Column A, Little of Column B.

With the very greatest of respect - no.

There is no legitimacy in Donald Trump's disrespectful, demeaning and bullying treatment of Zelenskyy today.

If he did that in private that would be bad enough but he chose to do it in the full view of the world media. It was utterly, utterly shameful in every respect. International politics is not conducted in this manner, especially when a sovereign state's existence literally hangs in the balance.

Any USA citizen who thinks that their president's actions today were in any way acceptable should hang their head in shame, quite frankly.

I never, ever would have imagined that I would have ever have witnessed this level of childishness from american diplomats in my lifetime, quite frankly.

I know an Australian person (and I have an outstanding offer to visit - Bundaberg, I like the rum and the ginger beer!) so please add my vote to the list!

Edit: I think I might be taking her up on that offer very soon. The Nuclear fallout is likely to be much less there!

I can’t believe what I saw today but at the same time, I’m not surprised. It looks to me like this was a planned ambush.

I wish I could. But it only allows one vote per ISP address then it blanks out the ability to vote further. :)

Each time I check it, the numbers are increasing but it seems to be staying steady at 89% of Australians continuing to support Ukraine after that bullying meeting.

I Wouldnt bet against it.

Wouldnt be far from the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact that allowed the betrayal of Poland and subsequent carving up.

Pretty much the same Administrations involved.

Sorry, I was being sarcastic when I said true diplomacy, because Trump's behavior is anything but diplomatic.

1im pretty sure that's already happened.

Yes, I feel pretty sure that was a strong reason for keeping Zelenskyy and others away from the US/Russian negotiations.

Yes @Marantz4250b ….. sadly have to agree. And this is not something new from this individual. SMH.

Sadly there are many other examples, but in particular this other ‘incident’…… deplorable behavior IMO by an individual then running for presidential office. From an online BBC November 26, 2015 article entitled ‘Donald Trump under fire for mocking disabled reporter’:
