I'm watching CNN Live Breaking News and they just showed a video of a huge governmental building being blown up by a missile strike.

I couldn't find it on the CNN website yet and tried to video it but upload says it's too large a file and I don't know how to downsize it. There were cars and people milling about, just a horrific sight.

"Andrey Kortunov, of the Russian International Affairs Council, a think tank with close ties to the foreign ministry, said he had not advised Russian officials to launch an invasion — and that the decision stunned officials. “I would say that many in the foreign office were surprised and shocked and I would even say devastated to see what is happening,” he told the BBC."

I think it is smarter not to guess whether they will, or won’t, but assume that they will. I never believed Russia would invade Ukraine, it looked so suicidal, and yet it happened. Now Germany has to decide how to survive without Russian gas. If we assume that China will invade Taiwan, we can at least double the production of imported parts so that the world is not left without cellphones or whatever depends on Taiwanese and Chinese import.

That's the smartest way to proceed, probably. Take steps to reduce the fallout should China invade Taiwan.

China doesn't listen to anyone but China. The media occasionally reports on the genocide of the Uyghurs, but I guess it's not sensational enough to hype like the Ukraine situation. So, it continues without the world doing much at all.

Realistically, these things are localized and the US shouldn't become involved beyond sanctions, but as you say--be prepared. In the event...

Ukrainian Civilians Take On Russian Invaders With Words And Deeds (rferl.org)

Videos are emerging of extraordinary civil resistance by Ukrainians against Russian aggression in their country. A crowd in Berdyansk booed Russian troops. A female driver refused to show her documents to a Russian soldier at a checkpoint in the Sumy region, and subjected him to a bold verbal tirade. Residents of a village bordering Belarus informed their Belarusian neighbors over a loudspeaker that their troops would not be welcome in Ukraine.

*This video comes with a goosebumps warning.

@ChrisJansing

Standing ovation just now for Ukraine’s Zelensky after speaking to the European Parliament - vowing “No one is going to break us…We have a desire to see our children alive”.

“We are fighting for our land, we are fighting for our lives, we are fighting for our future

At one point, the translator got emotional - moved by the stirring speech

Ambassadors and diplomats staged a mass walkout of a meeting of the UN's Human Rights Council during a speech by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

“I don’t read from paper, the paper phase is over, we’re dealing with lives. Without you Ukraine will be alone. We’ve proven our strength; we’re the same as you. Prove that you’ll not let us go. Then life will win over death”

Good.

What the heck! Why? Why would citizens of China be moved to tears by Putin’s unprovoked invasion of an innocent nation?
