Actually, we mainly got our news from the radio - I was alive during that time period. There was also Radio Free Europe, so I assume Europeans were also getting news from their radios.

I was only alive and cognizant during WWII, not the first one, LOL. I ain't that old.

Doh! I totally didn’t think of the radio. However, most would only listen to broadcasts in their own language and therefore get a somewhat biased version of events, I guess.

@nhmemorymaker Russian media is predominantly owned and run by the government so if they only listen to that, they’re going to get the Putin version. But they’re not restricted like e.g. China or North Korea, they can access international news or social media, so I really hope they are seeing the bigger picture.

Ok so then is this what he's doing now with his new training exercises? It fits the model just used in Ukraine doesn't it!?

Snipped and BBM

"NATO strengthening Baltic countries
According to de Hoop Scheffer, NATO must quickly strengthen its military presence in the Baltic Sea region. He points to the so-called Suwalki Passage, a 100-kilometre strip of Poland connecting the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad with its ally Belarus, thus forming the only land link between the Baltic states and the rest of NATO. "NATO must be there, if that Suwalki gap is closed, NATO will have a big problem and no more land access to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania."

They're here!

US Enforcement in Latvia arrive.jpg

Less than two days after U.S. President Joe Biden announced he would be sending more troops to the Baltic states, the first 40 soldiers of the 173rd Airborne Brigade of the US Army arrived in Latvia February 24.

In total, more than 300 additional US soldiers are planned to be transferred to Latvia.

Russian war games: Can Ireland stop exercises off its coast? | CTV News
''With the announcement that Russia plans to hold a live-fire naval exercise next month off the coast of Ireland – despite Ireland declaring their presence unwelcome, aspects of military maritime law have come under scrutiny as tensions continue to rise over the current Ukraine-Russia crisis.

The naval exercises are said to be taking place in parts of the Pacific, Mediterranean and an area about 130 nautical miles, or 240 kilometres, off the coast of County Cork, Ireland.

That location put the Russian navy within Ireland’s Exclusive Economic Zone, which extends for 200 nautical miles and is patrolled by Irish naval ships and airplanes. It is also the location of several crucial transatlantic data cables.''

''As for the Russians choosing the location off the coast of Ireland, Norman said it was “interesting” that the Russians would venture that far south.''
Transatlantic data cables? Ok, since he has the Bond villain lair going on it's not much of a jump to start thinking underwater tapping/hacking into data cables via submarines...I know, I know but it's not THAT big of a jump...considering the past 2 weeks.

Former NATO chief: 'Ukraine war is Europe's 9/11' | BNR Nieuwsradio
''FORMER NATO CHIEF: 'UKRAINE WAR IS EUROPE'S 9/11'
  • Mark van Harreveld
''As leader of a nuclear superpower, Russian President Vladimir Putin has become unpredictable and dangerous. Those remarks came from former NATO Secretary General and Dutch Minister of State Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, when interviewed by Dutch broadcasting company BNR. On the other hand, De Hoop Scheffer doesn't believe Putin will use his nuclear arsenal, as it would ensure his own downfall. ‘I do not foresee a war.’ Calling the invasion Europe’s 9/11 and a wake-up call, De Hoop Scheffer stresses that NATO should quickly beef up its military presence in the Baltic States.
''New ball game
De Hoop Scheffer considers the Russian invasion of Ukraine 'a turning point', whereafter things will never be the same again. Europe's own 9/11. The current situation cannot already be called a Third World War, according to De Hoop Scheffer. But 'things will be completely different if Putin decides to put one toe in one square centimetre of NATO territory', he added.

‘When an incident like that occurs, the conflict enters its next phase. NATO as a whole would step into action and. On a scale of 1 to 10, we are now at 7.5. In case of an attack on NATO, we would be well over 9'.

Putin is 'unpredictable'
Asked to what extent he believes Putin can still be considered as rational, De Hoop Scheffer replied that Putin's rationality seemingly 'made way for revisionism and resentment.' 'He is petulant, resentful and full of vengeance. That turns him into an unpredictable leader of a large country and nuclear superpower’.''

Russian fighter jet has violated Swedish airspace
Four Russian fighter jets have violated Swedish airspace, the Swedish Armed Forces writes on its website.

The Air Force carried out an operation with Jas 39 Gripen from the incident preparedness and documented the incident, in the form of photography.

- This shows that our preparedness is good. We were on site to secure territorial integrity and Sweden's borders. We have full control of the situation, says Air Force Chief Carl-Johan Edström.

Two Russian SU 27s and two Russian SU 24s violated Swedish airspace. The violation was short-lived and took place east of Gotland, across the sea.

- In light of the current situation, we take the incident very seriously. It is an unprofessional and irresponsible action on the part of Russia, says the air force chief.”

It happens sometimes so it’s nothing that never has happened before but now the situation is way more sensitive .

Maybe just thinking of it this way, poor Mrs. Johnson, she labors so hard but look she's having fun!

Juxtaposition of emotion - Visual artists will place elements with opposite or contrasting emotion for storytelling effect. For example, placing the emotion of suffering in a scene with laughter and happiness will emphasize the suffering.

Biden Aide Says Oil Companies Can Up Production If They Want

Perhaps Biden needs to be more public and direct about his offering the 0pportunity for US oil companies to increase production, as they are willing to step up and do this. I wish he would have stated this in his State of the Union address last night, if he is serious about this.

White House Quietly Calls On U.S. Oil Companies To Increase Production

In a move that likely angered his environment-conscious base, the White House has issued a muted request for U.S. oil companies to increase crude oil production in the wake of high crude oil and gasoline prices.

“Prices are quite high, the price signal is strong. If folks want to produce more, they can and they should,” White House National Economic Council Deputy Director Bharat Ramamurti said in an interview today.

But U.S. oil companies have long held that while the Administration hasn’t directly restricted U.S. output, the energy policies flowing out of the White House have put a damper not only on the attitude involving crude oil production but has made it far more difficult for oil companies to ramp up.

Oil companies such as Devon Energy have said they have been perplexed that the White House has not called on them directly to ramp up oil production. And Ramamurti’s comments today still do not rise to the level of asking U.S. producers for more oil.

I've heard over and over again on the news over the last two weeks that U.S. oil producers are prepared to increase production at significant rates that would allow us to ban Russian oil, but that the government has turned down this offer which would enable us to boycott Russian oil.

Since there was no link supplied what I found doesn’t sound like they are too ready:

U.S. oil producers are struggling to find enough crews, vehicles and equipment to take advantage of rising global demand and a seven-year high in crude prices, say executives at oilfield service firms.

The problems are preventing the world's top oil producer and consumer, the United States, from responding to higher prices and could mean it takes longer for global output to match demand recovering from the coronavirus pandemic. That would result in oil firms draining inventories and in turn contribute to higher prices.

Higher energy prices are fueling consumer inflation, which last month hit 6.2%, the highest in 30 years. The Biden administration has urged oil producers to pump more oil, signaling it might release U.S. emergency stockpiles if prices keep rising.
As energy prices soar, supply chain snags threaten U.S. oil output gains

Exactly! My friend is a supply English teacher and qualified 30 years ago and she looked at me like I had two heads when I read it to her and she said that she too has no understanding of what is being taught here
My God niner how tragic for your family, I'm so very sorry. I wish they all could have made it to safety and freedom. </3
I’m sorry to hear that @Niner
Now probably isn’t the time and it is a little off topic but my dearly departed mother in law was half Dutch and half German and lived in Bavaria and was 13 when WW2 was in full throes. She was at an all girls school and was very intelligent and knew exactly what was happening at that time in Germany and she opposed it and loathed Hitler. One day the girls were told to dress in their finest clothes as they were having a very important visitor . My MIL was what Hitler would call a typical aerian child with blonde hair and blue eyes. The visitors arrived and the girls were lined up on both sides of the room, facing one another. As the visitors entered, hush fell. Hitler walked down the line and as he reached Marianna he laid his hands on her shoulders and said I quote - “ you shall be one of mine, my Little aerian child . She was moved to another all girls school led by Hitlers youth. She tried many times to escape as she so strongly despised what he stood for. And consequently she received many punishments which resulted in her being transported to another facility . Whilst there she was given the punishment of scraping the food waste and leftovers down the chute using her bare hands ( not overly a punishment from my perspective but a lady didn’t use her hands to scrape meat potatoes gravy and sauerkraut from Officers plates so it was deemed a punishment to prevent her from consistently trying to escape). A couple of days into this ‘punishment’ and whilst scraping waste down the chute, hands came up from below, reaching for the food that she was throwing away. It was at this point that she realised that they were the starving prisoners of war. From henceforth she would get as much food as she could lay her hands on and actually steal it ( very risky had she had been caught). All this food she would put on plates and use pressure to squash it down to look like waste and she would then go to the chute to empty the contents down it to help feed the prisoners. She was devastated when after 4 weeks of this alleged punishment, she was told that she would be returning to her previous location and would be transported later that day. Upon leaving she saw the signage and she had spent time serving officers who would visit the place, a concentration camp! The guilt stayed with her for life . ( That’s a very condensed version with parts omitted ).
Please Putin, do not let us regress to those times where so many lives were lost and people tortured and starved to death.

Ukraine president asks Jewish people around world to speak against Russia | Ukraine | The Guardian
''Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has appealed to Jewish people across the world to speak out against the Russian assault on his country, a day after a missile hit close to a Holocaust memorial site in the capital, Kyiv.''

“It is a place of prayer and a place of remembrance for the 100,000 people killed by the Nazis … Who do you think you are, to make it a target for your missiles?”

''Zelenskiy, keen to rally more support from Israel and also from Jewish communities worldwide, also mentioned that the city of Uman, a pilgrimage site for Orthodox Jews from the Hasidic Breslov movement, was hit on the first night of the war.

“I am now addressing all the Jews of the world – don’t you see what is happening? It is very important that right now, millions of Jews around the world do not remain silent. Nazism is born in silence,” said Zelenskiy.''

Are we still buying Russian oil? And funding their invasion? Time to rally, and show them that Americans have grit, like our grandparents. We don't need their blood oil.

Russian agents plunge to new ocean depths in Ireland to crack transatlantic cables | Ireland | The Sunday Times (thetimes.co.uk)

Cables: under scrutiny
''Russia has sent intelligence agents to Ireland to map the precise location of the fibre-optic, ocean-bed cables that connect Europe to America, gardai suspect. This has raised concerns that Russian agents are checking the cables for weak points, with a view to tapping or even damaging them in the future.

Ireland is the landing point for undersea cables which carry internet traffic between America, Britain and Europe. The cables enable millions of people to communicate and allow financial transactions to take place seamlessly.''

EA Sports, Google, Dell, And Ford—Here’s The Growing List Of Companies Cutting Ties With Russia Over Invasion

For some, cutting ties with Russia marks the end of more than three decades of investment there following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The situation in Ukraine has prompted many to conclude that the financial and reputational risks of continuing operations in Russia are now too great.

"The world will judge them accordingly. And history will judge them accordingly," Kuleba said.

US Sikorsky Blackhawk copter in south Poland ~ 60km from Ukraine border
We got startled here early morning by a few Blackhawks flying overhead on their way towards NYC. Town I live in builds them so we get fly overs but not in the wee hours of the night. Of course your mind goes immediately to the current situation, escalating and migrating.

OMGOSH and I was half kidding! Is he planning revenge on the world for all the sanctions and the devastation caused to Russia's finances? Are we going to have Red October off the coasts of Ireland and Scotland!?

1. Thanks to all who are monitoring the air traffic.

2. If it's true there are more talks planned for today, I can't imagine what fresh hell Putin has planned for Ukraine. :(

And things could change and benefit all if Russia could just have a peaceful turning over of power, term limits that are written in stone. No more dictators! Russia could blossom and be a good neighbor, help the world's peace to grow. Why oh why do these men always want to subjugate instead of being good leaders? Ok my mini rants over:rolleyes:
