Internet backbone provider shuts off service in Russia

Cogent Communications, an internet backbone provider that routes data across intercontinental connections, has cut ties with Russian customers over its invasion of Ukraine. The US-based company is one of the world’s largest internet backbone providers and serves customers in 50 countries, including a number of high-profile Russian companies.

Unplugging Russia from Cogent’s global network will likely result in slower connectivity, but won’t completely disconnect Russians from the internet. Traffic from Cogent’s former customers will instead fall back on other backbone providers in the country, potentially resulting in network congestion. There isn’t any indication as to whether other internet backbone providers will also suspend services in Russia.

Ukraine, Russia Agreement on Evacuating Mariupol Civilians Collapses - WSJ

U.S. officials said Saturday that they are exploring a deal in which Poland would send Soviet-era aircraft to Ukraine in return for American F-16 jet fighters. The disclosure of a possible deal followed Mr. Zelensky’s impassioned plea via video to more than 200 members of Congress for assistance in obtaining more lethal military aid, especially Russian-made jet fighters that Ukrainian pilots can fly.

Ukraine’s General Staff said it was holding the line on most fronts and was beginning a counteroffensive, with Ukrainian forces releasing footage of a large column of abandoned Russian armor near Kharkiv. The governor of the southern Mykolaiv region, Vitaly Kim, said Ukrainian forces on Saturday pushed back Russian troops trying to enter the port city of Mykolaiv, seizing enemy armor. He called on local residents to feed stray Russian soldiers and then turn them over to police.

In a demonstration of its ability to counter Russia’s overwhelming advantage in aviation, Ukraine also shot down several Russian jet fighters, bombers and combat helicopters on Saturday, releasing footage of four captured pilots and crew and the remains of downed aircraft. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, who met U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the Ukrainian-Polish border on Saturday, said three of these Russian aircraft were downed with U.S.-made Stinger missiles.

[...]

To make up for its military setbacks, Russia has increasingly resorted to indiscriminate bombing and shelling of civilian areas, particularly in Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy and Mariupol, Ukrainian and Western officials said.

Russia’s army “has shown its true nature of a terrorist and coward, which is able to attack only the civilian population,” Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said.

When this started, I read articles claiming that, if Ukraine could hold out for 10 days, they would win. Now we see whether that is true.

Don't know, if this is posted before... but worth a share - just in case!

In Ukraine Belarusians fight for a free Belarus: 'After this we liberate Minsk'

A group of masked men with Ukrainian and Belarusian flags look straight into the camera. They have a message for soldiers from Belarus. "You should have deserted a long time ago, but it is not too late," it is said. "Do the right thing and step over to our side!"

In Oekraïne vechten Belarussen voor een vrij Belarus: 'Hierna bevrijden we Minsk'

Civil war style allegiances, two groups from the same country with opposing causes.

If only the Russian people could see what is happening. But they will never be able to put together a (great) list like this, because that might make them question the propaganda they are being fed.

Hmmm

That "blocked" flight on FR24 that I was watching, assuming it was the Rossya Special Forces plane sent from Moscow to DC to pick up the expelled Russian diplomats seems to have landed in St. John's Nova Scotia.

I dunno. Wrong plane, or they are switching planes, or something else.

I can see on FlightAware that it arrived Dulles Airport at 02:10 pm EST, but it does not appear to have departed, jet, and is not in the upcoming scheduled departures

I can't get the whole thing to work lol.

Why doesn't Ukraine attack the Russian convoy? And other questions - BBC News
''Everyone is baffled as to why Ukraine has not done more to attack the Russian convoy as it is a sitting duck for drone and airstrikes.

There are several possible explanations, Ukraine may be running out of armed drones and its small, outnumbered air force may be wary of being shot down by Russian air defence batteries.

Ben Barry from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) suggests the Ukrainians may well be safeguarding what resources they do have in readiness to counter-attack when the Russians get closer to Kyiv.''

I don't see any Rossiya Special Flights when using the FR24 "search" feature . 'Don't aircraft just seem to disappear from the screen if/when they turn off their transponders? And, those that say "blocked" are aircraft that have requested to be blocked??

Also, there's nothing per Sweeney's bot tracking.

The Russian diplomats have to leave the US before Monday, so they have until Monday to depart.

The US State Dept allowed Russia to send a large plane, a Iluysin II plane to land at Dulles Airport outside of DC.

The arrival has been documented. ( this is a stock photo, not at Dulles)

As Dulles is a busy airport, there are regular commercial flights scheduled as far out as I can see ( till Tuesday, March 8), but RSD88 is not yet listed.

They will have to list the departure in the next day or so for Dulles to keep up the regular schedule. I'll check back.

Is there a question of fuel shortage in the convoy? Has fuel been delivered to the military convoy? Seems odd to use the word "convoy" in this war, and instantly think of the canadian truck convoy - bunch of yahoos. Such contrast with the convoy outside Kyiv.

Hopefully the captured Russian aircraft can be swapped for F16s, and hopefully Ukraine soon has the munitions they need to destroy the convoy without getting hit themselves.

Mikhail Gorbachev Fast Facts - KTVZ

Great irony that Gorbachev's birthday was March 2. He is 91 years old. He really was one of the great statesmen of Russia, trying to move it forward from the old Soviet Union...and then he was "voted" out...and the old Soviet cronies got back in power.

Military equipment including missiles and ammunition has arrived into Ukraine from Australia, Defense Minister Peter Dutton said Sunday.

“We want the Ukranians to have the best opportunity to defend their homeland, and to protect women and children,” Dutton told Australian Broadcasting Corp. TV’s “Insiders” program. “There’s more assistance that we want to provide.”

Dutton declined to specify where the supplies had arrived in Ukraine, and said the delivery had been carried out with help from the U.S. and U.K.

Scholz and Bennett agreed during a 90-minute meeting in Berlin “to remain in close contact.” They’ll continue working toward the goal of ending the war in Ukraine as quickly as possible, according to the statement.

U.S. Officials Travel to Venezuela, a Russia Ally, as the West Isolates Putin

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has prompted the United States to pay closer attention to President Vladimir Putin’s allies in Latin America, which Washington believes could become security threats if the standoff with Russia deepens…

I had been thinking about this.

Good to know Aeroflot ( & associated) won't be flying into Cuba / Carribean in the near future. This helps keep some of the bad folk out of Venezuela. I just wish Brazil's President Bolisaro would stop kissing Putin's feet.

Is this a negotiation between Ukraine and USA to trade Russian fighter jets for USA F16s? That could be the tip of the scales that Putin is waiting for - a Ukrainian piloted USA F16 attacking Russian convoys in Ukraine. Proxy war that spreads beyond the borders of Ukraine?

Putin Allows Foreign Credit Payments in Rubles

Russia and Russian companies will be allowed, for now, to pay some of their foreign creditors in rubles, according to a decree signed by Putin on Saturday.

The temporary rules let the government and other entities circumvent technical problems when dealing in foreign currency and pay instead in quickly depreciating rubles.

The decree applies to payments of more than 10 million rubles per month to creditors from “countries that engage in hostile activities” against Russia, its companies and citizens. The government will prepare a list of such countries within two days.
