Democrats and Republicans agree on plan to suspend trade relations with Russia and Belarus – as it happened

summary:

On Day 12 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Washington mulls whether to ban Russian oil imports into the US. House speaker Nancy Pelosi indicated that the House would pursue legislation into the matter this week, while Antony Blinken, US secretary of state, said the US was in active discussions with its European partners – who are much more dependent on Russian oil than the US and could be pushed into a recession if the US banned imports – about this possible tactics. This morning, sources were telling Reuters that though the White House was previously hesitant, given the skyrocketing gas prices across the country, the Biden administration is willing to move forward on a ban without the participation of its European partners.

Congress has indicated that it plans to take aggressive action in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with the $10bn aid request to Ukraine included in the $1.5tn omnibus package that must be passed ahead of the 11 March deadline for government funding. The leaders of the House ways and means committee and the Senate finance committee announced they would be introducing bipartisan legislation that will suspend trade relations with Russia and Belarus.

US Secretary of State Blinken's plane has departed Shannon, Ireland and is over the mid-Atlantic returning to DC.

US Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to leave DC on March 9 for Poland.

I am also noticing there is a generous cadre of US and European military aircraft in the swath from Latvia to Romania. Always seem to be refueling tankers in the air and various types of miliary craft, from freight transport planes to fighter planes, including large helicopters and various sorts of intelligence surveillance craft and drones.

Pentagon sends 500 additional troops to Europe.

Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III has sent 500 additional troops from the United States to Europe to help reassure NATO allies and deter Russia from advancing beyond Ukraine, a senior Pentagon official said on Monday.

Over the weekend, Mr. Austin ordered KC-135 refueling aircraft and aircrews to Suda Bay, Greece; air support units to Poland and Romania; and ordnance and maintenance support troops to Germany, the official said.

The new deployments bring to more than 15,000 the number of troops the Pentagon has sent to Europe, including the Baltics and NATO’s eastern flank, in the run-up to Russia’s invasion on Feb. 24 and since then. A total of more than 100,000 U.S. troops are now stationed in Europe on permanent or temporary assignments, the Pentagon said.

In the Black Sea, the Ukrainian Armed Forces hit a Russian navy warship.

That’s according to Serhiy Bratchuk, a spokesman of the Operational Headquarters of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, Ukrinform reports.

"We will be destroying the enemy. Minus one enemy warship. The enemy suffers losses. Good job, you guys. Glory to the Armed Forces," Bratchuk said.”

However, when you look it up,it seems more of a patrolship??

@JerseyGirl
Thank you for this post on the last thread but do we know why the DPRNK ( Republic of Korea as stated in this post) is included when they are with Russia?
Also, do we know why Turkey is not included in the list when they have stood against Putins action and said that they will restrict access in the Black Sea? Am I getting it wrong?

A list of foreign states that Russia considers as having committed "unfriendly actions" against "Russia, Russian companies and citizens" was published on the Russian government's website on Monday. The countries, international organizations and territories considered "unfriendly" include:

Australia, Albania, Andorra, United Kingdom including Jersey, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands, Gibraltar, the member states of the European Union (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden), Iceland, Canada, Liechtenstein, Micronesia, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Republic of Korea, San Marino, North Macedonia, Singapore, USA, Taiwan, Ukraine, Montenegro, Switzerland, and Japan. Russia lists Taiwan as being part of China.

A complimentary item of legislation from Sunday states that Russian citizens and companies must apply for a special permit to deal with "unfriendly" foreign entities.

While Israel has condemned Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, it was not included on the list. Israel has taken on a mediation role during the conflict, seeing Prime Minister Naftali Bennett flying to Moscow on Saturday to speak with Putin.

Why Peter the Great Established a Beard Tax | Smart News| Smithsonian Magazine

I love reading history and biography. Along with Putin, I’ve read just about every noteworthy leader in history.

I remember when reading a biography of Peter the Great, that he himself shoveled the first dirt that would become St. Petersburg.

Peter the Great, as an omnipotent 17th century Czar, wanted one main thing—-for his vast Russian Empire to become MORE European. That’s why he he moved the capital from Moscow to his new city of St. Petersburg. He wanted his country to be closer to the West and to model themselves after Europeans.

He didn’t like the boyars (Russian nobility of the time) to wear beards…he thought it didn’t look as cosmopolitan as Europeans. He personally cut off many of their beards and then instituted a beard tax. Even the peasants had to pay if they didn’t shave their beards and mustaches.

Peter the Great’s passion to be like the West enabled his empire to grow.

Centuries later, Russia’s leader is ruining his country by heading in the opposite direction. Ironically, Putin was born in Leningrad, which was St. Petersburg before and is now again.

I’m certainly not advising that Putin should model himself on Peter the Great—- the Czar was not in favor of democracy and he killed his own son—-but he is called “the Great” because his move to European ideals made Russia bigger and more powerful.

I wish Putin would remember his history.

Germany sticks with Putin for its oil and gas

BERLIN — German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday pushed back hard against calls from the U.S. and Ukraine for a ban on imports of Russian gas and oil as part of international sanctions on Moscow.

Disgusting. Putin has created more refugees in Europe than any other leader since Hiitler, WW II. And Germany just ignores the crisis?

And I agree, Putin has pushed the EU and US/UN before with Crimea, since no one said a word, it was like a bully realizing he can continue to do what he wants with no consequences. We created the monster, by our previous inaction.

And China is Putin's buddy. We should stop all imports from China as well.

In following the FlightRadar24 site to get a "real-time" look at a little bit of the international flying military activity and support in Europe and, indeed, the world, there is one country conspicuous by it's absence of air military presence.

Germany

Perhaps their support is more land-based or otherwise, but in my recent 10 days or so, I can't remember one German military or support flight: No helicopters, no air force, no transport.

The workhorses, that are visible on FR24 are clearly the US and the UK. But every other nation in the area has has some visible support.

Any ideas on this one, my European pals?

Just want to add a personal note that Germany hosted a lot of refugees from Syria...where other countries looked away... (wich was/is very costly)

‘On Saturday evening, the German government announced that it would send weapons and other military equipment directly to Ukraine to support the country in its fight against Russia. From German army stock, 1000 anti-tank weapons and 500 Stinger-type anti-aircraft missiles will be delivered to Ukraine "as soon as possible".

Russia will stop 'in a moment' if Ukraine meets terms - Kremlin

Russia has told Ukraine it is ready to halt military operations "in a moment" if Kyiv meets a list of conditions, the Kremlin spokesman said on Monday.

Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was demanding that Ukraine cease military action, change its constitution to enshrine neutrality, acknowledge Crimea as Russian territory, and recognise the separatist republics of Donetsk and Lugansk as independent states.

It was the most explicit Russian statement so far of the terms it wants to impose on Ukraine to halt what it calls its "special military operation", now in its 12th day.

Ukraine aid growing as lawmakers shape big budget bill

“The clearest signal Congress can send to Vladimir Putin this week is passing a bipartisan aid package,” said Schumer, referring to the Russian president, “leaving no doubt that the democratic nations of the world stand with Ukraine and against Putin’s deeply immoral and bloody war.”

Proposed U.S. aid for Ukraine and its European allies has grown beyond $12 billion, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday, as congressional bargainers worked toward a bipartisan government-wide spending deal that would also contain fresh sums for battling COVID-19.

The Telegraph UK comes across with another great article:

How Russia’s ‘Z’ could become the next swastika
It may be just a letter to us, but the simple three-line icon has been appropriated and subverted into the emblem of a propaganda war

It's behind a paywall, but this is quite thought-provoking

" {The author} has posted pictures of a Z that Russian soldiers have formed from the insignia they claim are ripped from uniforms of killed Ukrainian soldiers. Other pictures, meanwhile, show children back home in a Russian hospice, presumably terminally ill, led out to form a human “Z” snaking through the winter snow. In orchestrated videos circulating on social media, flag-waving Russians stand in serried ranks wearing the Z emblem.

I would say Ukraine ought to agree. The Crimea is already controlled by Russia and its citizens are happy about that. The Donbas region is also very pro-Russia, so that would remove them as a thorn in Ukraine's side.

And then, enshrine neutrality (which probably means not joining NATO in the future) and stopping all aggression.

It sounds to me like the best deal they're going to get.
How is this a deal at all? These are the exact same demands Russia made before they invaded Ukraine, decimated cities, and murdered countless women and children.

Okay… so where does it end? Capitulation is a form of positive reinforcement. It’s why you never agree to the demands of a blackmailer — it only ups the ante.
