Why Peter the Great Established a Beard Tax | Smart News| Smithsonian Magazine
I love reading history and biography. Along with Putin, I’ve read just about every noteworthy leader in history.
I remember when reading a biography of Peter the Great, that he himself shoveled the first dirt that would become St. Petersburg.
Peter the Great, as an omnipotent 17th century Czar, wanted one main thing—-for his vast Russian Empire to become MORE European. That’s why he he moved the capital from Moscow to his new city of St. Petersburg. He wanted his country to be closer to the West and to model themselves after Europeans.
He didn’t like the boyars (Russian nobility of the time) to wear beards…he thought it didn’t look as cosmopolitan as Europeans. He personally cut off many of their beards and then instituted a beard tax. Even the peasants had to pay if they didn’t shave their beards and mustaches.
Peter the Great’s passion to be like the West enabled his empire to grow.
Centuries later, Russia’s leader is ruining his country by heading in the opposite direction. Ironically, Putin was born in Leningrad, which was St. Petersburg before and is now again.
I’m certainly not advising that Putin should model himself on Peter the Great—- the Czar was not in favor of democracy and he killed his own son—-but he is called “the Great” because his move to European ideals made Russia bigger and more powerful.
I wish Putin would remember his history.
