AP source: Biden to ban Russia oil imports

This comes from my local news station but AP is reporting.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has decided to ban Russian oil imports, toughening the toll on Russia’s economy in retaliation for its invasion of Ukraine, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Biden was set to announce the move as soon as Tuesday, the person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter before an announcement. The White House said Biden would speak Tuesday morning to announce “actions to continue to hold Russia accountable for its unprovoked and unjustified war on Ukraine.”

The U.S. will be acting alone, but in close consultation with European allies, who are more dependent on Russian energy supplies. Natural gas from Russia accounts for one-third of Europe’s consumption of the fossil fuel. The U.S. does not import Russian natural gas.

Gas prices are now the most expensive in US history, breaking record from 2008

After days of dramatically rising gas prices in wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the national average for a gallon of gas is now the highest in United States history, breaking the record that stood for nearly 14 years.

As of Tuesday morning, the cost of regular gas in the U.S. is $4.17, according to AAA, up from $4.06 on Monday. Last week, the average cost was $3.60.

The previous national average high was $4.11, set on July 17, 2008, according to AAA.

The US is a fortunate position here, as it already produces enough gas and oil to be self sufficient. Europe does not and we are therefore tied to Russia in that respect until other arrangements are made.

Not sure how on earth the USA uses 20% of the entire worlds oil up though, what the heck are you doing with it? I mean, fair enough, it’s yours to use, but that’s an enormous amount for just one country!

Ukraine latest news: Zelensky says Putin will attack Nato next | The Independent
''Russia will target Nato members next, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky has warned.
rbbm.
“When the limits of rights and freedoms are being violated and stepped on, then you have to protect us,” he urged Europe. “Because we will come first, you will come second.”

His warning comes as Russia continues to bombard cities across Ukraine, with Kyiv accusing Moscow of breaking a ceasefire agreement on Tuesday by shelling a civilian evacuation route from the besieged city of Mariupol.

Mr Zelensky announced that a child had died of dehydration in Mariupol on Monday as a result of the Russian force’s shelling of the city and their closure of its supply lines. This is the first time someone has died from dehydration in Ukraine since the end of the Second World War, he said.''

''UN reportedly tells staff not to use ‘war’ or ‘invasion’ to describe Putin’s attack on Ukraine
The UN has instructed its staff not to use the words “war” or “invasion” to describe Vladimir Putin’s attacks on Ukraine, it has emerged.

In an email seen by The Irish Times, the UN communications department wrote: “Some specific examples of language to use/not use at the moment.

“[Use] ‘conflict’ or ‘military offensive’ and NOT ‘war’ or ‘invasion’ when referring to the situation in Ukraine.”

Russia-Ukraine war: Ukraine accuses Russia of breaking Mariupol ceasefire and shelling humanitarian corridor – live | World news | The Guardian

The United Nations has blocked staff from using the words “war” or “invasion” to describe the situation in Ukraine, reports the Irish Times.

The move, understood to have been communicated to UN staff in an email on Monday, is reportedly aimed at balancing political sensitivities after member state Russia also banned those words.

Staff are instead advised to refer to the war as a “conflict” or a “military offensive” - despite the fact that hundreds of civilians have been killed and two million residents forced to flee.

They were also banned from using the Ukrainian flag in personal or official social media accounts or websites.

The British government is expected to make an announcement at around 4pm GMT today about how it plans to cut Russian oil and gas imports, reports Politico journalist Alex Wickham.

The prime minister, Boris Johnson, said yesterday that the world could not simply stop using Russian oil and gas but would have to speed up its transition away from it.

It comes as the US president, Joe Biden, is expected to announce a ban on Russian oil in remarks at 10.45am ET (3.45GMT).

EXPLAINER: What would happen if the US banned Russian oil? | CP24.com
Matthew Daly and Cathy Bussewitz, The Associated Press

''Unlike the United States, Europe is deeply reliant on energy it imports from Russia. While the U.S. could replace the relatively small amount of fuel it receives from Moscow, Europe could not, at least not anytime soon.

Here is a deeper look:

WILL THERE BE A BAN ON RUSSIAN OIL?

Amid rising gasoline prices in the U.S. — the average price has topped $4 a gallon for the first time since 2008 — the Biden administration faces growing pressure to impose further sanctions on Russia, including a ban on oil imports. No decision has yet been made.

For now, a broad U.S.-European ban appears elusive. On Monday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made clear that his country, Europe’s single-largest consumer of Russian energy, has no plans to join in any ban. In response, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman hinted that the U.S. could act alone or with a smaller group of allies.

“We have not been completely identical on all of the sanctions,” Sherman said. “Not every country has done exactly the same thing, but we have all reached a threshold that is necessary to impose the severe costs that we have all agreed to.”

Though U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has raised the possibility of a ban on imported Russian oil, Sherman noted, “he also said that we have to maintain a supply of oil,” perhaps through other means, to stabilize prices.

Even if a ban were enacted, the Biden administration and Congress “remain laser-focused on bringing down the higher energy costs for American families and our partners stemming from Putin’s invasion,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

Pelosi, who has expressed support for a U.S. ban on Russian oil, nevertheless also cited Biden’s action in leading U.S. allies to release 60 million barrels of oil from strategic reserves, including 30 million barrels from U.S. reserves, to try to stabilize global markets.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE U.S. ACTS ALONE?

If the U.S. alone were to ban imports of Russian oil and refined products, the impact on Moscow would likely be minimal. The United States imports a small share of Russia’s oil exports and doesn’t buy any of Moscow’s natural gas.

The United States imports about 100,000 barrels a day from Russia, only about 5% of Russia’s crude oil exports, according to Rystad Energy. Last year, roughly 8% of U.S. imports of oil and petroleum products came from Russia.

The U.S. could replace Russian crude with imports from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. For its part, Russia might find alternative buyers for that fuel, perhaps in China or India. Such a step “would introduce massive inefficiency in the market,” which escalates prices, said Claudio Galimberti, senior vice president of analysis at Rystad Energy.''

So many things are going on and it's easy to advocate for war, but what if the people who are dying don't want to die for a cause others feel is just?

Thank you for providing this perspective.

Just to clarify something here, as I'm a bit miffed. I realize tensions and emotions are off the charts, but still.

The International Red Cross is losing their minds along with everyone else. While I'm not necessarily a fan of them, they've been on the ground trying to work on evacuations every time they've failed. They aren't part of the war. There is no reason for anyone to start using Red Cross symbols on their own equipment. The Red Cross is neutral and trying desperately to evacuate civilians.

Rant over.

⚡️Zelensky: "International Committee of the Red Cross is forbidding us to use their emblem on the humanitarian mission vehicles.

It's very revealing. Some influential people would rather 'cross out' Ukraine."
Desperate times, like when fleeing civilians on foot, on a sidewalk are targeted by rocket fire and blown up. Desperate measures are needed sometimes. I'm sure it's not the first time in war that the Red Cross has been put on other vehicles to aid the actually Red Cross vehicles in doing their humanitarian work.

I'll go further and say if my vehicle was the only means for my family or neighbors to flee a war zone safely, I'm sure attending Red Cross workers right there on the spot would have no problem in labeling it with a Red Cross to protect it's evacuation. And if they did, I'd do it anyway. It's life and death, rules can be bent. AJMO

Yes, There are specific rules from the Geneva Convention in regards to where and how the emblem may be displayed. Without rules, a Russian vehicle with ill intent could just as easily attach the emblem to their vehicle.

It is easy to get frustrated. I can’t imagine the frustration Zelensky is experiencing. While we do not know the full context of what is being requested or referred to, I feel it is up to the IRC to uphold the rules in place not matter how difficult that may be. JMO

Yehhh right. Also the responses on this are interesting....flat out lies...How is it possible somebody can say this without blinking?

I noticed that the Russian ambassador to the UN showed some interesting body language at times; some excessive movement of the hands for example. JMO and it may mean nothing.

This morning (US Pacific time) is the first time I've seen a US Navy plane up in the area, a SuperHornet over southern Romania, near the Ukraine Black Sea border. It can carry air-to sea or air-to-land missiles, and has a larger fuel capacity than the smaller Hornet or other fighter planes.

I wonder where it is based out of. I don't know if US Navy would base in Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey. SuperHornets are not carrier-based planes.

Russian soldiers murder volunteers helping starving animals near Kyiv (kyivindependent.com)

[...]

They had just delivered dog food to a dog shelter that had run out of it and were on their way back to pick up Ustymenko’s parents.

They had just nearly made it home. As the car was approaching their house, there was a deafening sound.

A Russian vehicle – witnesses identify it as either a tank or an infantry fighting vehicle – opened fire on the car.

When the shooting stopped, Valeriy Ustymenko, the father of Serhiy, ran to the car. Everyone inside was already dead.

He dragged out the three bodies and took them to his basement, where he has been hiding from the constant shelling, like most people in Bucha.

Three days later, the bodies are still there. Due to shelling, they can’t be buried. Their friends and families can’t say goodbye to their loved ones.

Soon my garden will show (coincidental, because I always loved the combination) her colors.....grape hyacinth plant, blue and daffodils, yellow.
Oh, me too Bit of hope

I love planting bulbs and numerous varieties of daffodils, and romanus hyacinths are my favorites in the spring garden. My February Gold daffodils are up and it won't be long before the rest come up. In the next weeks, my front yard should have a blue and yellow theme.

We've had a dry winter so I hope the blooms are good. These seem to be not favored by the many deer that run up and down our streets, unlike tulips which are like putting treats out for them.

A Swedish Air Force plane is circling a corner of the Baltic Sea just west of Latvia and Lithuania, just north of Kaliningrad. It's at 43,000 ft so it may be surveilling the Russian flights into and out of Kaliningrad.

Russian-owned (not foreign-leased) commercial planes can thread the needle in trips between St. Petersburg, Russia and Kaliningrad without technically violating NATO airspace. In cold February, it's hard to believe Russians are flying into Kaliningrad for tourism.

I'm very glad to see the Allies seem to be patrolling this corridor that Russia could be using for surveillance of the Baltic countries.

US Army planes are also up in Lithuania

Niner should be happy to read this.

The costs of China's 'no limits' support for Putin. Did Beijing get played with the Ukraine invasion? | CBC News
''Chinese President Xi Jinping may not be enjoying his support for Russia as much these days''
''The war has unified the West, giving NATO's military alliance new resolve. In China's own backyard, Japan's former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe raised what was once unthinkable — arguing Tokyo should consider inviting the U.S. to station nuclear weapons there "to protect Japan and the lives of its people in this reality."

The current government rejected the idea, but it was enough to prompt a warning from Beijing for Japan to "stop provoking trouble."

There is Western unity also in the unexpected severity of its economic sanctions on Moscow; sanctions which have forced some big Chinese banks to stop doing business with Russia and brought instability to world markets and the trade that China relies on. ''

''Did Xi know that Putin was preparing to invade Ukraine when they agreed to co-operate? Beijing isn't saying, but some China observers say there are signs it was not informed.

'China was, in fact, played'
"China was, in fact, played," wrote Yun Sun, director of the China program at Stimson Center, a U.S. think tank on international security.

She points to China's lack of preparedness in getting its own people out of Ukraine. The embassy in Kyiv didn't even start to register the more than 6,000 Chinese citizens in the country until the day after Russian tanks were rolling in and missiles were falling, she wrote.

China has since had trouble getting them out, even asking for Ukraine's help.''

Thanks, Pommy, that was the video i mentioned yesterday but I couldn’t find it again. They are not being shown the truth.

And then there are the social media virals doing the rounds causing more misinformation. Here are a few of them debunked - all miscaptioned images:

Ukraine invasion: False claims the war is a hoax go viral
Although I’m sure that some Russians have been brainwashed and do believe the propaganda being pushed down their throats by Putin and his regime, I also think that many will be “Toeing the Party Line” and saying to those journalists that present them with the evidence, what they think they SHOULD say ( ie. I Support Putin)
( Putin wouldn’t do that) etc so as not to be targeted and suffer at the hands of the regime if and when the article is broadcast because Putin will be aware of all the news broadcasts from whatever networks and news stations and SM and I would not put it past him to have his minions instructed to find any dissenters and those that don’t say the ‘right’ thing when being interviewed by the press and shown the horrific war images . It’s self preservation! They will say that they support Putin because they fear saying what they truly feel …. JMOO
