Negotiations. 4th round. On peace, ceasefire, immediate withdrawal of troops & security guarantees. Hard discussion. Although Russia realizes the nonsense of its aggressive actions, it still has a delusion that 19 days of violence against peaceful cities is the right strategy https://t.co/BhFLgBSKiu

The parties actively express their specified positions. Communication is being held yet it’s hard. The reason for the discord is too different political systems. is a free dialogue within the society & an obligatory consensus. is an ultimatum suppression of its own society https://t.co/O00fnCd1WP

Monday musing.

Mariupol is still stranded with no concrete evacuation and/or humanitarian aid. My assumption, and I'm sure I'm not alone, is there are thousands of civilians laying dead there. How can there not be?

WHY is it so important to stop aid to Mariupol?

Right now, negotiations are ongoing. What happens when Russia messes around too long and mass casualties ensue? I wonder what happens then.

Red Cross chief: Ukraine war 'nothing short of a nightmare' | AP News
[...]

Robert Mardini, the director-general of the International Committee of the Red Cross, also called the war “catastrophic” for civilians affected by the fighting as people run out of drinking water, food, medical supplies and fuel for heating — particularly in the surrounded Ukrainian city of Mariupol. Medical facilities also continue to be targeted in attacks.

And while the Red Cross continues to speak with Russian and Ukrainian leaders, Mardini said there’s so far been no established routes for people to safely leave Mariupol and some other areas facing intense warfare.

“People are in desperate need to to take shelter, and this is why the situation cannot, cannot continue like this,” he told The Associated Press while on a visit to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. “History is watching what is happening in Mariupol and other cities and civilians must be protected. So whether (it’s) a cease-fire, or a combination of a cease-fire and safe evacuation of civilians, is an absolute must.”

Anjela, 55, a Ukrainian refugee from Poltava who wouldn’t give her last name, said after arriving in Poland that only a NATO intervention could bring an end to the violence in Ukraine.

“I don’t know when I will see my husband. I don’t know when my children will return home,” she said. “I beg you, it depends only on you, close the sky, everything else we will do ourselves.”

War censorship exposes Putin's leaky internet controls | AP News
[...]

Yet the Kremlin’s latest censorship efforts have revealed serious shortcomings in the government’s bigger plans to straightjacket the internet. Any Russian with a modicum of tech smarts can circumvent government efforts to starve Russians of fact.

For instance, the government has so far had only limited success blocking the use of software known as virtual private networks, or VPNs, that allows users to evade content restrictions. The same goes for Putin’s attempts to restrict the use of other censorship-evading software.

More than 160 private cars have been able to leave the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol and were en route to the Russian-occupied town of Berdyansk, the city council said.

Over the past week, repeated efforts to evacuate civilians trapped in Mariupol have failed.

In an online post, the Mariupol city council said:

It is known that as of 1300 (1100 GMT) more than 160 private cars managed to leave.

Today's news

Israel's first open support for sanctions
Israel will not allow Russia to use it as a route to circumvent sanctions against the country. That said Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, visiting his Slovakian counterpart Ivan Korcok in Bratislava. It is the first time that Israel has so openly expressed its support for sanctions against Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working with the National Bank of Israel, the Ministries of Finance, Economic Affairs and Energy, the aviation authorities and many other agencies, among others,” Lapid said.

Israel received criticism and warnings, including from the US, for not contributing enough to the sanctions against Russia. For example, there are reports of increasing numbers of private planes operated by Russian oligarchs at Ben Gurion International Airport.

Lapid once again condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine and said Israel would do everything in its power to mediate, end the fighting and restore peace, working with the United States and European allies, among others.

National Guard chief: operation is not going as hoped
One of Russia's most influential figures has publicly acknowledged that the "military operation" in Ukraine is not going as well as hoped. It concerns Viktor Zolotov, the leader of the National Guard of Russia and member of the influential Security Council. "Not everything is going as fast as we would have liked," he said in a statement on the National Guard's website, according to Reuters news agency. That website is currently unavailable.

Damage to Chernobyl power supply again
Russian soldiers have again damaged a high-voltage line that supplies electricity to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Administrator Ukrenergo reports this on Facebook . The power line had just been repaired after being damaged earlier. A squad of installers will again have to travel to the area, which is controlled by Russian troops, to carry out repairs, Ukrenergo said.

Ukraine: Talks with Russia 'difficult'
Government delegations from Ukraine and Russia are currently consulting online. Communication is difficult, Ukrainian negotiator Podoljak said on Twitter. He cites the difference in political culture as the reason: "Ukraine is a society of dialogue and consensus, Russia is a country of ultimate oppression."

Unclear if Chechen leader Kadyrov is in Ukraine
It is unclear whether Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Russia's Chechnya region, is in Ukraine, as he claims. Yesterday he said he was near Kiev to speak with Chechen troops involved in the attack on the capital. On images from a Chechen TV channel, Kadyrov can be seen in a dark room, without stating exactly where that room is.

The possible arrival of Kadyrov keeps the minds of Ukrainian politicians and military personnel busy. A politician has promised a house for the soldier who manages to kill the Chechen leader. An adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry says Kadyrov is hiding in a basement. He calls on him to "come out and not hide like a rat".

Kadyrov is a staunch ally of Russian President Putin. It has been known for some time that Chechen militias are fighting in Ukraine. Incidentally, there are also Chechens fighting on the Ukrainian side. These would be volunteer legions that fought against the Russian army in the Chechen wars.

etc.

I found this
Syrische huurlingen vechten aan Russische zijde: geharde, nietsontziende soldaten

Syrian mercenaries fight on Russian side: hardened, ruthless soldiers

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls them "Middle East volunteers" who want to help with the "special operation" in Ukraine. But in reality these are hardened fighters, who are recruited for payment in Syria. These mercenaries are very important to Putin, says correspondent Olaf Koens.

Today another play like this during a meeting of the National Security Council. According to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoygu, 16,000 volunteers from the Middle East have already volunteered to fight with Russian-backed militias in eastern Ukraine.

Putin responded with approval: "If there are people who want to come and help voluntarily, without payment (…) then we must do everything we can to help them reach the combat zones."

Syrian fighters are cannon fodder
But it is not so voluntary and without payment, correspondent Olaf Koens knows. "Russia is recruiting mercenaries in Syria," said Koens from the Ukrainian city of Lviv. "They have to do the dirty work in Ukraine for Putin for a lot of money. The Syrian fighters are cannon fodder, who are hired for the most dangerous work, so that the number of deaths among Russian soldiers is limited."

etc.

There are couple of inconsistent reports about it out there. This really give me the creeps. Same about the Chechen.....very scary people.

Did anybody see another independent media outlet about the soldiers recruited from Syria? Someone made an interesting remark about it on twitter. Putin has spoke out about it, said already 16.000 are coming, but Assad hasn't. Is this an indication Putin is lying again?

Squatters occupy Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska's London mansion | Toronto Sun

“By occupying this mansion, we want to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine, but also the people of Russia who never agreed to this madness,” said a statement from squatters, who described themselves as anarchists.
“You occupy Ukraine, we occupy you,” the statement said.''

''Deripaska, who has stakes in En+ Group, a major extractives and energy company which owns UC Rusal, one of the world’s major aluminum producers, is worth an estimated 2 billion pounds and has a multi-million pound property portfolio in Britain, the British government said at the time.

The activists’ leader said the property had been bought with money “stolen by Putin and the Russian mafia”
''French police have detained an activist who broke into a villa belonging to President Putin’s daughter in Biarritz and declared it to be a shelter for Ukrainian refugees.

Pierre Haffner, a former businessman who lived in Russia for 25 years, may face prosecution after leading a group of pro-Ukraine protesters into Alta Mira, the property on the seafront of the Atlantic resort that is used by Katerina Tikhonova, 35, the younger daughter of the Russian leader.''

Geslaagde evacuatie uit Marioepol • Krakers bezetten villa's oligarchen

Successful evacuation of civilians from Mariupol
Dozens of passenger cars (160, according to the Dutch radio broadcast, just minutes ago and Pommy Mommy's post #668 It is known that as of 1300 (1100 GMT) more than 160 private cars managed to leave.) have been able to leave the heavily besieged city of Mariupol. This is reported by the city council. The cars are on their way to Berdyansk, a city in the area controlled by the Russian army. Then they drive to Zaporizhzhya, which is administered by Ukraine.

According to the city council, at least 50 cars have left and a total of 160 vehicles are allowed to leave the city. The corridor seems safe, the city council writes, but the situation could change at any moment.

Until now, every evacuation attempt from Mariupol has failed because the Russian shelling continued. The situation in the city is dire, as humanitarian aid cannot reach the surrounded city. According to the city, there is an urgent need for food, drinking water and medicines. There is no heating or electricity.

Britain warns Putin of ‘war with Nato’ if Russia steps a ‘single toecap’ on its territory | Evening Standard
"Britain bluntly warned Vladimir Putin on Monday that he would face “war with Nato” if even a “single toecap of a Russian soldier” stepped into the territory of the military alliance’s 30 members.

Cabinet minister Sajid Javid also accused the Russian president of committing war crimes, with Russian troops reported to have attacked 31 health centres in Ukraine including a cancer hospital, as well as a maternity hospital.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on Sunday that it “it is only a matter of time” before Russian missiles fall on Nato territory after Kremlin forces fired 30 rockets at the Yavoriv military base, less than 15 miles from the border with Poland.''

''As many countries feel the impact of the economic turmoil caused by the war, Mr Javid defended Boris Johnson seeking to persuade Saudi Arabia to boost its oil output so the West can wean itself off dependence on flows from Russia.
Asked if Britain was overlooking Saudi Arabia’s record on human rights, the Health Secretary said: “We’ve got a candid frank relationship with them, it is a very important country for us, and I think it is right that the Prime Minister is leading this effort to engage Saudi Arabia even more so in the events that we’re seeing unfolding now.”
